WAS / WERE ABLE TO - to manage to do something in one particular situation
COULD – had the general ability to do something (state)
The negative COULDN’T is possible in both situations
Remember! verbs : SEE, HEAR, FEEL, UNDERSTAND, REMEMBER, TASTE - always go with COULD
