FUTURE FORMS
Be going to + verb
(Simple Future)

Prior Plans – I’m going to take a vacation to Hawaii.

Will + verb
(Simple Future)

Promises/Willingness

Predictions/Guesses – Look at the dark rain clouds nearby. It’s going
to rain soon.

1) I know this math is difficult. I’ll help you with it later today.
2) The phone is ringing. I’ll get it!
Decision made in the moment –
A: We are going to eat out tonight. Do you want to come with us?
B: Sure, I’ll come. I’ll get my coat.
Predictions/Guesses – The Brazilian soccer team is the best. They will
win the next World Cup.
Intentions/Plans – I’ll fly to Boston next week.

Present
Progressive

Future Plans already arranged – I’m traveling to Chicago next
month. I have a meeting that I must attend.
Definite Intention
A: What are you going to do this evening?
B: After work, I’m meeting a friend of mine. We are going


shopping for new shoes.

Simple Present

Schedules – The bus leaves at 6:00am tomorrow morning. Be on time,
please!

Future Progressive I’m going to Chicago next week. I’ll be staying at the Ritz Hotel. I’ll be
attending a business meeting.

Also – be going to be + -ing form can be used:
I’m going to be traveling to Chicago next week. I’m going to be
staying at the Ritz Hotel.

Future Perfect

By the time I turn 40, I will have gone on a safari in Africa.
By the end of this semester at SSALI, we will have finished many
chapters in this grammar book. Also the students will have taken the
proficiency exam to determine if they are ready for the next level.

Modals

Some Modals refer to future time – I might see my friends this
weekend. I may take a vacation at the end of the month.
