UNIT 1: A VISIT FROM A PEN PAL
I. The Past Simple Tense: Thì quá khứ đơn
1. Form To be
- Affirmative: S + V2/ed…. S + was/were……
- Negative: S + did + not + V….. S + was/were + not…..
- Interrogative: Did + S + V….? Was/Were + S ….?
2. Use
a. Diễn tả một hành động xảy ra trong quá khứ xác đònh rõ thời gian (yesterday,
ago, last ……, in the past, in 1990)
Ex: - My father bought this house 10 years ago.
- Mr. Nam worked here in 1999.
b. Diễn tả một loạt các hành động xảy ra liên tiếp trong quá khứ.
Ex: - Last night, I had dinner, did my homework, watched TV and went to bed.
- When she came here in 1990, she worked as a teacher.
II. The past simple with “wish”: Thì quá khứ đơn với động từ “wish”.
Ta dùng “wish” ở thì quá khứ đơn để chỉ một ao ước không thể xảy ra ở hiện tại.
Ex: I wish I were at the party now. (Tôi ước tôi đang dự tiệc ngay lúc này)
=> S1 + wish + S2 + V2/ed ………..
* Notes: Ghi chú
1. S1 có thể giống hoặc khác S2.
Ex: We wish you stayed here longer. (Chúng tôi mong anh ở đây lâu hơn)
2. “Wish” phải hòa hợp với chủ từ đứng trước nó.
Ex: He wishes he had a printer. (Anh ta mong có được chiếc máy in)
3. Ta phải dùng “were” cho tất cả các chủ từ.
Ex: I wish she were my friend. (Tôi ước gì cô ấy là bạn tôi)

UNIT 2: CLOTHING
I. The present perfect tense: Thì hiện tại hoàn thành
1. Form: Công thức
- Affirmative: S + has/have +V3/ed….
- Negative: S + has/have + not + V3/ed…..

2. Use: Cách dùng
a. Diễn tả một hành động xảy ra trong quá khứ và kéo dài đến hiện tại (never, ever,
since, for, so far, until now, up to now,…….)
Ex: We have learnt English for 5 years. (Chúng tôi học T.A được 5 năm)
* Cách dùng của since và for:
- SINCE: chỉ mốc thời gian (2000, September, I last saw you, …)
- FOR: chỉ khoảng thời gian (3 months, a long time, ages, …)
b. Diễn tả một hành động xảy ra trong quá khứ không xác đònh rõ thời gian
(already, yet). “Already” dùng trong câu xác đònh, “yet” dùng trong câu phủ đònh và
nghi vấn (nó thường đặt cuối câu).
Ex: Have you seen this movie yet? (Bạn đã xem bộ phim này chưa)
c. Diễn tả một hành động vừa mới xảy ra (just, recently, lately).
Ex: She has just gone out. (Cô ấy mới vừa ra ngoài)
II. The passive form : Thể bò động
1. Form:Active (Câu chủ động) S + V + O
Passive (Câu bò động) S + be V3/Ved + (by O)
Ex: Active: She arranges the books on the shelves every weekend.
S V O
Passive: The books are arranged on the shelves (by her) every weekend.
S be V3/ed by O
2. Rules: Quy tắc:
Khi đổi từ chủ động sang bò động, ta chú ý các bước sau:
a. Xác đònh S (Chủ từ), V (Động từ), O (Túc từ) và thì của động từ trong câu chủ
động.
Ex: Active: She arranges the books on the shelves every weekend.
S V1 O
b. Đem O lên làm S, chuyển S xuống làm O đặt sau by.
Ex: The books are arranged on the shelves (by her) every weekend.
S by O

c. Thêm động từ to be (phù hợp với thì của động từ trong câu chủ động), và chuyển
động từ chính sang V3/ed.
Ex: The books are arranged on the shelves (by her) every weekend.
be V3/ed
3. Notes: Chú ý
a. Trong câu bò động: by O luôn đứng sau adverbs of place (trạng từ chỉ nơi chốn) và
trước adverbs of time (trạng từ chỉ thời gian).

Ex: The books are arranged on the shelves (by her) every weekend.
b. Trong câu bò động, có thể bỏ: by people, by us, by them, by someone…
Ex: Passive: A new bridge has been built across the river (by them).
Active: Chủ động Passive: Bò động

III. The passive form with modal verbs: Thể bò động với động từ khiếm khuyết
1. Các động từ khiếm khuyết (M.V) thường gặp là : can, must, have to, might, will,
shall, could, be going to, should ……….
2. Form:Active S + M.V + Vo + O
Passive S + M.V + be V3/Ved + (by O)
Ex: You should do this exercise before 8 o’clock.
This exercise should be done (by you) before 8 o’clock.

UNIT 3: A TRIP TO THE COUNTRYSIDE
I. The modal “could” with “wish”: động từ khiếm khuyết “could”trong câu ao ước.
Ta dùng động từ khiếm khuyết “could”trong câu ao ước để chỉ một ao ước có thể xảy
ra ở tương lai.
Ex: I wish I could become a doctor. (Tôi ước tôi có thể làm bác só)

=> S1 + wish + S2 + could/ would + Vo ………..

Ex: We wish he could pass the axam tomorrow.

II. Prepositions of time : Giới từ chỉ thời gian.

In + tháng / năm : vào tháng / năm…. (Ex: in May, in 1990)
On + ngày / thứ : vào ngày / thứ….. (Ex: on 25 June, on Tuesday)
At + giờ : lúc ….. (Ex: at 6, at half past eleven)
After / Before + giờ : trước / sau …… (Ex: after 4, before 9)
Between … and …: giữa …. và… (Ex: between 6 and 6:30)
Till / Up to + ngày / buổi / giờ : mãi đến (Ex: till 10 o’clock)
III. Adverbs clauses of result: Mệnh đề trạng từ chỉ kết quả.
So (vì thế, cho nên) thường được đặt ở vế câu thứ hai để diễn đạt kết quả của vế thứ
nhất, nó thường đứng sau dấu phẩy.
Ex: Hoa was lazy, so she failed her exam.
(Hoa lười học vì thế cô ta thi rớt)

UNIT 4: LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
I. Modal verbs with “if”: Động từ khiếm khuyết (M.V) với “if” (nếu).
Đối với mệnh đề điều kiện “if” thì chỉ có 3 dạng (sẽ học ở Unit 6 & 10). Nhưng ở
đây ta sẽ gặp 1 dạng rất quen thuộc là dùng “if” với động từ khiếm khuyết (M.V).
Ex: If he gets a good grade, his father would give him a present.
(Nếu anh ta được hạng cao, bố anh ta sẽ tặng quà cho anh ta)

II. Reported speech: Câu tường thuật.
Trong câu tường thuật, ta phải luôn luôn chuyển các chủ từ, túc từ, tính từ sở hữu
sao cho phù hợp về mặt nghóa đối với câu trực tiếp. Ngoài ra, ta còn phải lùi thì và các
trạng từ.
