THE ‘REAL’ PROVERBS
1. Every cloud … HAS A SILVER LINING.
Meaning: It means that you should never feel hopeless because difficult
times are always followed by better days.

Example: "What am I going to do? My girlfriend has left me again!" Reply:
"Don't worry. It will be all right. Every cloud has a silver lining."
2. Money is … THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL.
Meaning: All wrongdoing is because of wanting (financial) wealth. This
saying comes from the writings of the Apostle Paul.

3. When in Rome … DO AS THE ROMANS DO.
Meaning: When visiting a foreign land, follow the customs of those who live
in it.
4. Beggars can't … BE CHOOSERS.
Meaning: People who are in great need must accept any help that is
offered, even if it is not a complete solution to their problems.
5. Beauty … IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER.
Meaning: Different people will find different things beautiful and the
differences of opinion don't matter too much.
6. A barking dog … SELDOM BITES.
Meaning: Those who make loud threats seldom carry them out.
7. Don't put all your eggs … IN ONE BASKET.
Meaning: You should not focus all your resources on one hope or possibility,
because it is too risky.
8. Too many cooks … SPOIL THE BROTH.
Meaning: If too many persons are managing an activity, they can easily ruin
it, in this case each of many cooks add something to the soup, which finally
tastes awful.
9. A leopard cannot … CHANGE ITS SPOTS.
Meaning: One can't change one's essential nature. See also the proverb
“The tiger cannot change its stripes.” These expressions both originated in an
ancient Greek proverb that appears in the Bible (Jeremiah 13:23): "Can the
Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots?" It was first recorded in
English in 1546.

For example, He's a conservative, no matter what he says; the leopard
cannot change its spots.
10.Curiosity … KILLED THE CAT.
Meaning: This proverb is used to warn against being too curious lest one
should suffer (=so that one does not suffer) harm.
