CAN / MUST
I-I read and I understand
1. “Can I open the window, please? It’s too hot in here.” The pupil asks the teacher.
2. “Yes you can”. The teacher answers.
3. Kevin loves foreign languages, he can read and write in English.
4. But he can’t say much in Spanish yet.
5. Pupils must pay attention and work hard in class.
6. They must be on time and respect everybody.
7. Pupils mustn’t chat or chew gum in class.
8. They mustn’t write on the tables.
II- I learn the new grammar rule
CAN and MUST are two modal auxiliaries. They are no verbs.
They are always followed by a verb base: can / must + VB
They are invariable
They can be used with all the personal pronouns
CAN expresses REQUEST sentence 1
PERMISSION sentence 2
CAPABILITY sentence 3
INCAPABILITY (can’t) sentence 4
MUST expresses
OBLIGATION: sentences 5 and 6
INTERDICTION (mustn’t) sentences 7 and 8
