Read the following passage carefully and then choose the best answer to each question.
As heart disease continues to be the number-one killer in the United States, researchers have become
increasingly interested in identifying the potential risk factors that trigger heart attacks. High-fat
diets and "life in the fast lane" have long been known to contribute to the high incidence of heart
failure. But according to new studies, the list of risk factors may be significantly longer and quite
surprising.
Heart failure, for example, appears to have seasonal and temporal patterns. A higher percentage
of heart attacks occur in cold weather, and more people experience heart failure on Monday than on
any other day of the week. In addition, people are more susceptible to heart attacks in the first few
hours after waking. Cardiologists first observed this morning phenomenon in the mid-1980, and have
since discovered a number of possible causes. An early-morning rise in blood pressure, heart rate, and
concentration of heart stimulating hormones, plus a reduction of blood flow to the heart, may all
contribute to the higher incidence of heart attacks between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 10:00 A.M.
Trang 3 - Mã đề thi 134
VnDoc - Tải tài liệu, văn bản pháp luật, biểu mẫu miễn phí
In other studies, both birthdays and bachelorhood have been implicated as risk factors. Statistics
reveal that heart attack rates increase significantly for both females and males in the few days
immediately preceding and following their birthdays. And unmarried men are more at risk for heart
attacks than their married counterparts. Though stress is thought to be linked in some way to all of the
aforementioned risk factors, intense research continues in the hope of further comprehending why
and how heart failure is triggered.
Câu 45: What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. seasonal and temporal patterns of heart attacks
B. cardiology in the 1980s
C. risk factors in heart attacks
D. diet and stress as factors in heart attacks
Câu 46: In line 2, the word "potential" could best be re-placed by which of the following?
A. possible

A. affect
B. cause
C. encounter
D. involve
Câu 48: Which of the following could best replace the word "incidence" as used in line 3?
A. factor
B. rate
C. chance
D. increase
Câu 49: The author uses the word "temporal" in line 6 to mean
A. of a certain date
B. regularly
C. affected by
D. expected
Câu 50: The phrase "susceptible to" in line 8 could best be replaced by
A. affected by
B. prone to
C. . aware of
D. accustomed
Câu 51: According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a possible cause of many heart
attacks?
A. decreased blood flow to the heart
B. increased blood pressure
C. increase in hormones
D. lower heart rate
Câu 52: The word "phenomenon" in line 9 refers to which of the following?
A. activity
B. occurrence
C. habit
D. illness
Câu 53: Which of the following is NOT cited as a possible risk factor?
A. having a birthday B. being under stress C. getting married
D. eating fatty foods
Câu 54: Which of the following does the passage infer?
A. We have not identified many risk factors associated with heart attacks.
B. We now fully understand how risk factors trigger heart attacks.
C. We do not fully understand how risk factors trigger heart attacks.
D. We recently began to study how risk factors trigger heart attacks.
Read the following passage carefully and then choose the best answer to each question.
In most discussions of cultural diversity, attention has focused on visible, explicit aspects of culture,
such as language, dress, food, religion, music, and social rituals. Although they are important, these
visible expressions of culture, which are taught deliberately and learned consciously, are only the tip
of the iceberg of culture. Much of culture is taught and learned implicitly, or outside awareness. Thus,
neither cultural insiders nor cultural outsiders are aware that certain “invisible” aspects of their
culture exist.
Invisible elements of culture are important to us. For example, how long we can be late before
being impolite, what topics we should avoid in a conversation, how we show interest or attention
through listening behaviour, what we consider beautiful or ugly- these are all aspects of culture that
we learn and use without being aware of it. When we meet other people whose invisible cultural
assumptions differ from those we have learned implicitly, we usually do not recognize their
behaviour as cultural in origin.
Trang 4 - Mã đề thi 134
VnDoc - Tải tài liệu, văn bản pháp luật, biểu mẫu miễn phí
Differences in invisible culture can cause problems in cross-cultural relations. Conflicts may arise
when we are unable to recognize others’ behavioral differences as cultural rather than personal. We
tend to misinterpret other people’s behaviour, blame them, or judge their intentions or competence
without realizing that we are experiencing cultural rather than individual differences.
Formal organizations and institutions, such as schools, hospitals, workplaces, governments, and
the legal system are collection sites for invisible cultural differences. If the differences were more
visible, we might have less misunderstanding. For example, if we met a man in a courthouse who was
wearing exotic clothes, speaking a language other than ours, and carrying food that looked strange,
we would not assume that we understood his thoughts and feelings or that he understood ours. Yet
when such a man is dressed similarly to us, speaks our language, and does not differ from us in other
obvious ways, we may fail to recognize the invisible cultural differences between us. As a result,
mutual misunderstanding may arise.
Câu 55: What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To describe cultural diversity.
B. To point out that much of culture is learned consciously.
C. To explain why cross-cultural conflict occurs.
D. To explain the importance of invisible aspects of culture.
Câu 56: The word “rituals” in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to __________.
A. cultures
B. formalities
C. assumptions
D. aspects

A. visible aspects of culture are learned in formal institutions
B. most aspects of culture cannot be seen.
C. other cultures seem cold to us.
D. we usually focus on the highest forms of culture
Câu 58: Which of the following was NOT mentioned as an example of invisible culture?
A. What topics to avoid in conversation.
B. How late is considered impolite
C. What food to eat in a courthouse
D. How people express interest in what others are saying.
Câu 59: The word “those” in paragraph 2 refers to__________.
A. people who speak a different language
B. people from a different culture
C. topics that should be avoided in conversation
D. invisible cultural assumptions
Câu 60: It can be inferred from paragraph 3 that conflict results when ___________.
A. people think cultural differences are personal
B. people compete with those from other cultures
C. one culture is more invisible than another culture.
D. some people recognize more cultural differences than others.
Câu 61: The author implies that institutions such as schools and workplaces ________.
A. are aware of cultural differences
B. teach their employees about cultural differences
C. share a common culture.
D. reinforce invisible cultural differences

Differences in invisible culture can cause problems in cross-cultural relations. Conflicts may arise
when we are unable to recognize others’ behavioral differences as cultural rather than personal. We
Trang 10 - Mã đề thi 134

tend to misinterpret other people’s behaviour, blame them, or judge their intentions or competence
without realizing that we are experiencing cultural rather than individual differences.
B. To explain the importance of invisible aspects of culture.
C. To explain why cross-cultural conflict occurs.
D. To point out that much of culture is learned consciously.
Câu 56: The word “rituals” in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to __________.

Câu 58: Which of the following was NOT mentioned as an example of invisible culture?
A. What food to eat in a courthouse
B. How people express interest in what others are saying.
C. How late is considered impolite
D. What topics to avoid in conversation.
Câu 59: The word “those” in paragraph 2 refers to__________.
A. topics that should be avoided in conversation
B. invisible cultural assumptions
C. people from a different culture
D. people who speak a different language

A. one culture is more invisible than another culture.
B. people compete with those from other cultures
C. people think cultural differences are personal
D. some people recognize more cultural differences than others.
Câu 61: The author implies that institutions such as schools and workplaces ________.

In other studies, both birthdays and bachelorhood have been implicated as risk factors. Statistics
reveal that heart attack rates increase significantly for both females and males in the few days
Trang 15 - Mã đề thi 134

immediately preceding and following their birthdays.
A. cardiology in the 1980s
B. diet and stress as factors in heart attacks
C. seasonal and temporal patterns of heart attacks
D. risk factors in heart attacks
Câu 46: In line 2, the word "potential" could best be re-placed by which of the following?

attacks?
A. lower heart rate

A. occurrence
B. habit
C. activity
D. illness
Câu 53: Which of the following is NOT cited as a possible risk factor?
A. eating fatty foods B. being under stress C. having a birthday D. getting married
Câu 54: Which of the following does the passage infer?
A. We have not identified many risk factors associated with heart attacks.
B. We do not fully understand how risk factors trigger heart attacks.
C. We recently began to study how risk factors trigger heart attacks.
D. We now fully understand how risk factors trigger heart attacks.
Differences in invisible culture can cause problems in cross-cultural relations. Conflicts may arise
when we are unable to recognize others’ behavioral differences as cultural rather than personal. We
tend to misinterpret other people’s behaviour, blame them, or judge their intentions or competence
without realizing that we are experiencing cultural rather than individual differences.

visible, we might have less misunderstanding.

An early-morning rise in blood pressure, heart rate, and
Trang 21 - Mã đề thi 134

concentration of heart stimulating hormones, plus a reduction of blood flow to the heart, may all
contribute to the higher incidence of heart attacks between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 10:00 A.M.

Trang 22 - Mã đề thi 134
A. To explain why cross-cultural conflict occurs.

C. To point out that much of culture is learned consciously.
D. To describe cultural diversity.

Câu 58: Which of the following was NOT mentioned as an example of invisible culture?
A. What topics to avoid in conversation.
B. How late is considered impolite
C. How people express interest in what others are saying.
D. What food to eat in a courthouse
Câu 59: The word “those” in paragraph 2 refers to__________.
A. invisible cultural assumptions
B. people from a different culture
C. topics that should be avoided in conversation
D. people who speak a different language
Câu 60: It can be inferred from paragraph 3 that conflict results when ___________.
A. people compete with those from other cultures
B. some people recognize more cultural differences than others.

D. one culture is more invisible than another culture.
