Mạo từ là gì?
Mạo từ là từ dùng trước danh từ và cho biết danh từ ấy nói đến một đối tượng xác định hay
không xác định. Chúng ta dùng the khi danh từ chỉ đối tượng được cả người nói lẫn người nghe
biết rõ đối tượng nào đó. Ngược lại, khi người nói đề cập đến một đối tượng chung hoặc chưa
xác định được thì chúng ta dùng mạo từ bất định a, an.
Có mấy loại mạo từ trong tiếng anh? Mạo từ trong tiếng Anh bao gồm ba từ và được phân
chia như sau:

Mạo từ xác định (Denfinite article): the
•
Mạo từ bất định (Indefinite article): a, an
•
Mạo từ Zero (Zero article) hay danh từ không có mạo từ đứng trước: thường áp dụng
cho danh từ không đếm được (uncountable nouns) và danh từ đếm được ở dạng số nhiều: rice,
tea, people, clothes.
Mạo từ không phải là một loại từ riêng biệt, chúng ta có thể xem nó như một bộ phận của tính
từ dùng để bổ nghĩa cho danh từ – chỉ đơn vị. Cách sử dụng mạo từ A, An, The trong tiếng
anh
Cách dùng mạo từ an
Mạo từ an được dùng trước từ bắt đầu bằng nguyên âm (trong cách phát âm, chứ không phải
trong cách viết). Các từ bắt đầu bằng các nguyên âm: a, e, i, o: an aircraft, an egg, an object
Một số từ bắt đầu bằng “u“: an uncle, an umbrella Một số từ bắt đầu bằng “h” câm: an heir, half
an hour. Các từ mở đầu bằng một chữ viết tắt: an S.O.S ( một tín hiệu cấp cứu ), an MSc ( một
thạc sỹ khoa học), an X-ray ( một tia X ).
Cách dùng mạo từ a.
•
Chúng ta dùng a trước các từ bắt đầu bằng một phụ âm hoặc một nguyên âm có âm là
phụ âm. Ngoài ra chúng bao gồm một số trường hợp bắt đầu bằng u, y, h.
•
Đứng trước một danh từ mở đầu bằng “uni…” phải dùng “a” (a university/ a uniform/

universal)
•
Dùng trước “half” (một nửa) khi nó theo sau một đơn vị nguyên vẹn: a kilo and a half,
hay khi nó đi ghép với một danh từ khác để chỉ nửa phần (khi viết có dấu gạch nối): a half –
share, a half – day (nửa ngày).
•
Dùng với các đơn vị phân số như 1/3 a/one third – 1/5 a /one fifth. Dùng trong các thành
ngữ chỉ giá cả, tốc độ, tỉ lệ: $4 a kilo, 100 kilometers an hour, 2 times a day.
•
Dùng trong các thành ngữ chỉ số lượng nhất định như: a lot of/ a couple/ a dozen.
•
Dùng trước những số đếm nhất định thường là hàng ngàn, hàng trăm như a/one hundred
– a/one thousand.
Note: A/An có hình thức giống nhau ở tất cả các giống, loài Ví dụ: a tiger (một con cọp);a
tigress (một con cọp cái) an uncle (một ông chú);an aunt (một bà dì)
Cách dùng mạo từ The:
Chúng ta dùng the trước một danh từ đã được xác định cụ thể về mặt tính chất, đặc điểm, vị trí
hoặc đã được đề cập đến trước đó, hoặc những khái niệm phổ thông, ai cũng biết. The girl in
the right is my friend. (Cả người nói và người nghe đều biết đó là cô bé nào) The earth is round.
