support students to achieve to the best of their

help students manage their behavior;
improve students’ social and personal
relationships;
increase a student’s ability to cope and succeed;
provide transition and post secondary planning
(help students adjust to a new grade and/or college

planning); and
connect the work of the school counselor to school
improvement goals.

21st Century Students
Many students face emotional, physical,

social, and economic barriers that inhibit
successful learning. One in five children
live in poverty, and almost one-third of the
children in the country under the age of
eighteen do not live with both parents
(Children’s Defense Fund, 2010).
