1985: Dr. Norm Gysbers proposes school counseling as a
program in Missouri
1989: State school counselor associations begin to
introduce school counseling models
1994: GOALS 2000: The Educate America Act support
academic national standards
1997: ASCA releases The National Standards for School
Counseling Programs
1997: Transforming School Counseling (Ed Trust)
2001: No Child Left Behind
2003:ASCA releases the ASCA National Model (2nd 2005)

Individual Student Planning

Counselors coordinate activities aimed at
helping students systematically plan and
manage their own learning and
development.
The model specifies four different ways in
which counselors can monitor individual
planning. These include: case management,
individual appraisal, individual advisement,
and placement.

Responsive Services
Included in responsive services are interventions
necessary to help students succeed; these include
individual and group counseling, consultation, referrals
to community agencies, crisis intervention and
management, and prevention activities.

School Counseling/Student
Development Curriculum
These are structured developmental experiences designed
to address academic, career, and personal/social needs of

System support includes activities such as professional
