Basic to any understanding of Canada in the 20 years after the Second World War is the country’s
impressive population growth. For every three Canadians in 1945, there were over five in 1966. In September
1966 Canada’s population passed the 20 million mark. Most of his surging growth came from natural increase.
The depression of the 1930’s and the war had held back marriages, and the catching-up process began after
1945. The baby boom continued through the decade of the 1950’s, producing a population increase of nearly
fifteen percent in the five years from 1951 to 1956. This rate of increase had been exceeded only once before
settleD. Undoubtedly, the good economic condition of the 1950’s supported a growth in the population, but the
expansion also derived from a trend toward earlier marriages and an increase in the average size of families. In
1957 the Canadian birth rate stood at 28 per thousand, one of the highest in the world.
After the peak year of 1957, the birth rate in Canada began to decline. It continued failing until in 1966
it stood at the lowest level in 25 years. Partly this decline reflected the low level of births during the depression
and the war, but it was also caused by changes in Canadian society. Young people were staying at school
longer; more women were working; young married couples were buying automobiles or houses before starting
families; rising living standards were cutting down the size of families.
It appeared that Canada was once more falling in step with the trend toward smaller families that had
occurred all through the Western world since the time of the Industrial Revolution.

Although the growth in Canada’s population had slowed down by 1966 (the increase in the first half of
the 1960’s was only nine percent), another large population wave was coming over the horizon. It would be
composed of the children who were born during the period of the high birth rate prior to 1957.

answer to each of the questions from 45 to 54.
The hippopotamus is the third largest land animal, smaller only than the elephant and the rhinoceros. Its
name comes from two Greek words which mean “river horse”. The long name of this animal is often shortened
to the easier to handle term “hippo.”
The hippo has a natural affinity for the water. It does not float on top of the water; instead, it can easily
walk along the bottom of a body of water. The hippo commonly remains underwater for three to five minutes
and has been known to stay under for up to half an hour before coming up for air.
In spite of its name, the hippo has relatively little in common with the horse and instead has a number of
interesting similarities in common with the whale. When a hippo comes up after a stay at the bottom of a lake or

In my opinion, students should not be allowed to use cell phones at school for three reasons. First,
mobile phone may distract students’ learning. During the lesson, students are sometimes busy replying
messages, receiving phone calls, surfing on the internet rather than paying attention to the teacher’s explanation.
Second, most students now waste a large amount of time using their mobile phones. A recent survey has shown
that a student owning such a device spends an average of an hour during lessons chatting and playing games a
day. Last but not least, mobile phones are likely to do harm to students’ health. Using too much cell phone is
scientifically proved to cause such diseases as short- sightedness, heart-attack and reduce face - to face
communication which builds up necessary social skills. In conclusion, despite various benefits of mobile phones
in our modern lives, students especially young ones should totally be discouraged from using them at school.

parents make. Generally, the child will be only too aware of what his parents expect, and will fail. Unrealistic
parental expectations can cause great damage to children.
However, if parents are not too unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but are ambitious in a

Read the passage and then choose the correct answer.
The first two decades of this century were dominated by the microbe hunters. These hunters had
tracked down one after another of the microbes responsible for the most dreaded scourges of many
centuries: tuberculosis, cholera, diphtheria. But there remained some terrible diseases for which no
microbe could be incriminated: scurvy, pellagra, rickets, beriberi. Then it was discovered that these
diseases were caused by the lack of vitamins, a trace substance in the diet. The diseases could be
prevented or cured by consuming foods that contained the vitamins. And so in the decades of the 1920’s
and 1930’s, nutrition became a science and the vitamin hunters replaced the microbe hunters.
In the 1940’s and 1950’s, biochemists strived to learn why each of the vitamins was essential for
health. They discovered that key enzymes in metabolism depend on one or another of the vitamins as

coenzymes to perform the chemistry that provides cells with energy for growth and function. Now, these
enzyme hunters occupied center stage.
You are aware that the enzyme hunters have been replaced by a new breed of hunters who are
tracking genes – the blueprints for each of the enzymes – and are discovering the defective genes that
cause inherited diseases – diabetes, cystic fibrosis. These gene hunters, or genetic engineers, use
recombinant DNA technology to identify and clone genes and introduce them into bacterial cells and
plants to create factories for the massive production of hormones and vaccines for medicine and for better
crops for agriculture. Biotechnology has become a multibillion-dollar industry.
In view of the inexorable progress in science, we can expect that the gene hunters will be replaced
in the spotlight. When and by whom? Which kind of hunter will dominate the scene in the last decade of
our waning century and in the early decades of the next? I wonder whether the hunters who will occupy
the spotlight will be neurobiologists who apply the techniques of the enzyme and gene hunters to the
functions of the brain. What to call them? The head hunters. I will return to them later.

Read the passage and choose the best answer for each question.
If parents bring up a child with the sole aim of turning the child into genuis, they will cause a disaster.
According to several leading educational psychologists, this is one of the biggest mistakes which ambitious
parents make. Generally, the child will be only too aware of what his parents expect, and will fail. Unrealistic
parental expectations can cause great damage to children.
However, if parents are not too unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but are ambitious in a
sensible way, the child may succeed in doing very well-especially if the parents are very supportive of their child.

After inventing dynamite, Swedish-born Alfred Nobel became a very rich man. However, he
foresaw its universally destructive powers too late. Nobel preferred not to be remembered as the inventor
of dynamite, so in 1895, just two weeks before his death, he created a fund to be used for awarding prizes
to people who had made worthwhile contributions to humanity. Originally there were five awards:
literature, physics, chemistry, medicine, and peace. Economics was added in 1968, just sixty-seven years
after the first awards ceremony.
Nobel's original legacy of nine million dollars was invested, and the interest on this sum is used
for the awards which vary from $30,000 to $125,000.
Every year on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel's death, the awards (gold medal,
illuminated diploma, and money) are presented to the winners. Sometimes politics plays an important
role in the judges' decisions. Americans have won numerous science awards, but relatively few literature
prizes.

correct answer to each of the question s from 55 to 64.
If parents bring up a child with the sole aim of turning the child into a genius, they will cause a
disaster. According to several leading educational psychologists, this is one of the biggest mistakes which
ambitious parents make. Generally, the child will be only too aware of what his parents expect, and will
fail. Unrealistic parental expectations can cause great damage to children. However, if parents are not too
unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but are ambitious in a sensible way, the child may
succeed in doing very well – especially if the parents are very supportive of their child. Michael Collins is
very lucky. He is crazy about music, and his parents help him a lot by taking him to concerts and
arranging private piano and violin lessons for him. They even drive him 50 kilometers twice a week for
violin lessons. Michael’s mother knows very little about music, but his father plays the trumpet in a large
orchestra. However, he never makes Michael enter music competitions if he is unwilling. Winston Smith,
Michael’s friend, however, is not so lucky. Both his parents are successful musicians, and they set too
high a standard for Winston. They want their son to be as successful as they are and so they enter him for
every piano competition held. They are very unhappy when he does not win. Winston is always afraid
that he will disappoint his parents and now he always seems quiet and unhappy.

I’d like to introduce about my family. There are four members in my family, my parents, my little

sister and I. My mother is 45 years old. She works as a nurse in a big hospital. She is a caring person. My
father is a teacher. He works in a school near our house. He seems to be strict, but we all know he loves
us very much. Although my parents are very busy at work, they always try their best to spend time with
us. My little sister is 5 years old. She is a very lovely child. In family, we often share the household
chores. My father is willing to help my mother with the housework. I take responsibility for cooking and
doing the washing up. There are some rules in my family. My parents allow us to watch TV after we have
finished our homework. We have to show respect to the old, obey our parents. My family is very closeknit and supportive of one another. I always feel secure and beloved in my family.
