Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
A number of factors related to the voice reveal the personality of the speaker.
The first is the broad area of communication, which includes imparting information by
use of language, communicating with a group or an individual and specialized communication
through performance. A person conveys thoughts and ideas through choice of words, by a tone
of voice that is pleasant or unpleasant, gentle or harsh, by the rhythm that is inherent within
the language itself, and by speech rhythms that are flowing and regular or uneven and hesitant,
and finally, by the pitch and melody of the utterance. When speaking before a group, a person's
tone may indicate uncertainty or fright, confidence or calm. At interpersonal levels, the tone
may reflect ideas and feelings over and above the words chosen, or may belie them. Here the
participant’s tone can consciously or unconsciously reflect intuitive sympathy or antipathy,
lack of concern or interest, fatigue, anxiety, enthusiasm or excitement, all of which are .usually
discernible by the acute listener. Public performance is a manner of communication that is
Giáo Viên Chuyên Luyện Thi
Thầy Bùi Văn Vinh – 0977.267.662
highly specialized with its own techniques for obtaining effects by voice and/or gesture. The
motivation derived from the text, and in the case of singing, the music, in combination with
the performer's skills, personality, and ability to create empathy will determine the success of
artistic, political, or pedagogic communication.
Second, the voice gives psychological clues to a person's self-image, perception of
others, and emotional health. Self-image can be indicated by a tone of voice that is confident,
pretentious, shy, aggressive, outgoing, or exuberant, to name only a few personality traits. Also
the sound may give a clue to the facade or mask of that person, for example, a shy person
hiding behind an overconfident front. How a speaker perceives the listener's receptiveness,
interest, or sympathy in any given conversation can drastically alter the tone of presentation,
by encouraging or discouraging the speaker. Emotional health is evidenced in the voice by
free and melodic sounds of the happy, by constricted and harsh sound of the angry, and by dull
and lethargic qualities of the depressed.
Question 36. What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. The function of the voice in performance

C. The connection between voice and personality
D. The production of speech
Question 37. What does the author mean by staring that, "At interpersonal levels, tone may

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions from 43 to 50.
Television has transformed politics in the United States by changing the way in
which information is disseminated, by altering political campaigns, and by changing citizen's
patterns of response to politics. By giving citizens independent access to the candidates,
television diminished the role of the political party in the selection of the major party
candidates. By centering politics on the person of the candidate, television accelerated the
citizen's focus on character rather than issues.
Television has altered the forms of political communication as well. The messages on
which most of us rely are briefer than they once were. The stump speech, a political speech
given by traveling politicians and lasting an hour and a half to 2 hours, which characterized
nineteenth-century political discourse, has given way to the 30-second advertisement and
the 10 second "sound bite" in broadcast news. Increasingly the audience for speeches is
not that standing in front of the politician but rather the viewing audience who will hear
and see a snippet of the speech on the news.
In these abbreviated forms, much of what constituted the traditional political
discourse of earlier ages has been lost. In 15 or 30 seconds, a speaker cannot establish the
historical context that shaped the issue in question, cannot detail the probable causes of
the problem, and cannot examine alternative proposals to argue that one is preferable to
others. In snippets, politicians assert but do not argue. Because television is an intimate
medium, speaking through it require a changed political style that was more conversational,
personal, and visual than that of the old-style stump speech. Reliance on television means
that increasingly our political world contains memorable pictures rather than memorable
words. Schools teach us to analyze words and print. However, in a word in which politics is
increasingly visual, informed citizenship requires a new set of skills.
Recognizing the power of television's pictures, politicians craft televisual, staged
events, called pseudo-event, designed to attract media coverage. Much of the political activity
we see on television news has been crafted by politicians, their speechwriters, and their
public relations advisers for televised consumption. Sound bites in news and answers to
questions in debates increasingly sound like advertisements.
Question 43. What is the main point of the passage?

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
Because writing has become so important in our culture, we sometimes think of it as
more real than speech. A little thought, however, will show why speech is primary and writing
is secondary to language.
When writing did develop, it was derived from and represented speech, although
imperfectly. Even today, there are spoken languages that have no written form. Furthermore,
we all learn to talk well before we learn to write; any human child who is not severely
handicapped physically or mentally will learn to talk: a normal human being can not be
prevented from doing so. On the other hand, it takes a special effort to learn to write; in the
past many intelligent and useful members of society did not acquire the skill, and even today
many who speak languages with writing systems never learn to read or write, while some who
learn the rudiments of those skills do so only imperfectly.
To affirm the primacy of speech over writing is not, however, to disparage the latter.
One advantage writing has over speech is that it is more permanent and makes possible the
records that any civilization must have. Thus, if speaking makes us human, writing makes us
civilizes.

Since water is the basis of life, composing the greater part of the tissues of all living
things, the crucial problem of desert animals is to survive in a world where sources of flowing
water are rare. And since man’s inexorable necessity is to absorb large quantities of water at
frequent intervals, he can scarcely comprehend that many creatures of the desert pass their
entire lives without a single drop.
Uncompromising as it is, the desert has not eliminated life but only those forms unable
to withstand its desiccating effects. No moist- skinned, water – loving animals can exist there.
Few large animals are found: the giants of the North America desert are the deer, the coyote,
and the bobcat. Since desert country is open, it holds more swift – footed, running, and leaping
creatures than the tangled forest. Its population are largely nocturnal, silent, filled with
reticence, and ruled by stealth. Yet they are not emaciated. Having adapted to their austere
environment, they are as healthy as animals anywhere in the world.
The secret of their adjustment lies in a combination of behavior and physiology. None could
survive if, like mad dogs and Englishmen, they went out in the midday sun; many would die
in a matter of minutes. So most of them pass the burning hours asleep in cool, humid burrows
underneath the ground, emerging to hunt only by night. The surface of the sun – baked desert
averages around 150 degrees, but 18 inches down the temperature is only 60 degrees.

the correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
History books recorded that the first film with sound was The Jazz Singer in 1927. But
sound films, or talkies, did not suddenly appear after years of silent screenings. From the
earliest public performances in 1896, films were accompanied by music and sound effects.
These were produced by a single pianist, a small band, or a full-scale orchestra; large movie
theatres could buy sound-effect machines. Research into sound that was reproduced at exactly
the same time as the pictures – called “synchronized sound” – began soon after the very first
films were shown. With synchronized sound, characters on the movie screen could sing and
speak. As early as 1896, the newly invented gramophone, which played a large disc carrying
music and dialogue, was used as a sound system. The biggest disadvantage was that the sound
and the pictures could become unsynchronized if, for example, the gramophone needle jumped
or if the speed of projector changed. This system was only effective for a single song or
dialogue sequence.
In the “sound-on-film” system, sound was recorded as a series of marks on celluloid which
could be read by an optical sensor. These signals would be placed on the film alongside the
image, guaranteeing synchronization. Short feature films were produced in this ways as early
as 1922. This system eventually brought us “talking pictures”.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions from 43 to 50.
Simply being bilingual doesn't qualify someone to interpret. Interpreting is not only a
mechanical process of converting one sentence in language A into the same sentence in
language B. Rather, its a complex art in which thoughts and idioms that have no obvious
counterparts from tongue to tongue _ or words that have several meanings must be quickly
transformed in such a way that the message is clearly and accurately expressed to the listener.
At one international conference, an American speaker said, "You can't make a silk
purse out of a sows ear", which meant nothing to the Spanish audience. The interpretation
was, "A monkey in a silk dress is still a monkey" _ an idiom the Spanish understood and that
expressed the same idea.
There are 2 kinds of interpreters, simultaneous and consecutive. The former, sitting in
a separated booth, usually at a large multilingual conference, speaks to listeners wearing
headphones, interpreting what a foreign language speaker says _ actually a sentence behind.
Consecutive interpreters are the ones most international negotiations use. They are employed
for smaller meetings without sound booths and headphones. Consecutive interpretation also
requires two-person teams. A foreign speaker says his piece while the interpreter, using a
special shorthand, takes notes and during a pause, tells the client what was said.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct word or phrase that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 31 to 35.
The traditional definition of literacy is considered to be the ability to read and write, or
the ability to use language to read, write, listen, and speak. In modern contexts, the word refers
to reading and writing at a level suitable for communication, or at a level that lets one
understand and communicate ideas in a literate society,' so as to take (31)_____ in that society.
The United Nations, Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has drafted
the following definition: “Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create,
communicate and compute, using printed and written' materials associated with varying
contexts. Literacy involves a continuum of learning to enable an Individual to achieve his or
her goals, to develop his, or her (32) _____ and potential, and to participate fully in the wider
society."
Many policy analysts consider literacy rates a crucial measure of a region's human
capital. This claim is made on the foundations that literate people can be trained less
Giáo Viên Chuyên Luyện Thi
Thầy Bùi Văn Vinh – 0977.267.662
expensively than illiterate people, generally have a higher socio-economic (33) _____ and
enjoy better health and employment prospects. Policy makers also argue that literacy increases
job opportunities and access to higher education. In Kerala, India, for example, female and
child mortality rates declined dramatically in the 1960s, when girls who were educated in the
education reforms after 1948 began to raise families. Recent researchers, (34)_____, argue that
correlations such as, the one listed above may have more to do with the effects of schooling
rather than literacy in general. Regardless, the demand of educational systems worldwide
includes a basic (35) _____ around communication through test and print, which is the
foundation of most definitions of literacy.

the correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
Some animal behaviorists argue that certain animals can remember past events,
anticipate future ones, make plans and choices, and coordinate activities within a group. These
scientists, however, are cautious about the extent to which animals can be credited with
conscious processing.
Explanations of animal behavior that leave out any sort of consciousness at all and
ascribe actions entirely to instinct leave many questions unanswered. One example of such
unexplained behavior: Honeybees communicate the sources of nectar to one another by doing
a dance in a figure-eight pattern. The orientation of the dance conveys the position of the food
relative to the sun’s position in the sky, and the speed of the dance tells how far the food source
is from the hive. Most researchers assume that the ability to perform and encode the dance
isinnate and shows no special intelligence. But in one study, when experimenters kept changing
the site of the food source, each time moving the food 25 percent farther from the previous
site, foraging honeybees began to anticipate where the food source would appear next. When
the researchers arrived at the new location, they would find the bees circling the spot, waiting
for their food. No one has yet explained how bees, whose brains weigh four ten-thousandths
of an ounce, could have inferred the location of the new site.
Other behaviors that may indicate some cognition include tool use. Many animals, like
the otter who uses a stone to crack mussel shells, are capable of using objects in the natural
environment as rudimentary tools. One researcher has found that mother chimpanzees
occasionally show their young how to use tools to open hard nuts. In one study, chimpanzees
compared two pairs of food wells containing chocolate chips. One pair might contain, say, five
chips and three chips, the other fourchips and three chips. Allowed to choose which pair they
wanted, the chimpanzees almost always chose the one with the higher total, showing some
sort of summing ability. Other chimpanzees have learned to use numerals to label quantities of
items and do simple sums.
