3. Passive voice
Passive voice can be translated from English
into Vietnamese in the following ways:
A to be + past participle (by B)
A được/ do/ bị/ + động từ (bởi/ bằng B)
Hoặc A được/ do/ bị (+ B) + động từ

In the old days, most of our coal was
transported by sea.
Trước đây, hầu hết than của chúng ta được
chuyên chở bằng đường biển.

However, in Vietnamese, there are cases
where one can see the words được/ bị but
they are not translated into English passive
sentences at all:
• Anh ấy bị ngã: He fell.
• Chị Mai bị ho: Mai has a cough.
• Hôm nay chúng ta được đánh chén một bữa

no: We had an enormous meal today.
• Em được mấy tuổi rồi? How old are you?

3. Passive voice
Yet in other cases, we had better turn the
passive voice in English into active voice in
Vietnamese, as this will sound more natural in
Vietnamese.
• Comprehensive efforts need to be made to
finish this construction project on time.
Cần tạo ra nhiều nỗ lực tổng hợp để hoàn
thành công trình xây dựng này đúng kế hoạch.
(Rather than: Các nỗ lực tổng hợp cần được
tạo ra …)

• Great contribution of all social levels has been
made to eradicate hunger and reduce poverty.
Mọi tầng lớp xã hội đã có những đóng góp to
lớn nhằm xoá đói giảm nghèo.
• Economic integration should be enhanced in
order to create a dynamic economic area.
Cần tăng cường hội nhập kinh tế nhằm tạo ra
một khu vực kinh tế năng động.

• The final will be played on 8 Sept., not the 1st
as previously announced.
Trận chung kết sẽ diễn ra vào ngày 8 tháng 9
chứ không phải ngày 1 như đã thông báo.

• I attended their wedding party yesterday.
H«m qua t«i ®i dù ®¸m c­íi cña hä.
• It’s very kind of you to help him.
B¹n thËt tèt bông khi gióp ®ì «ng ta.
• This country has a large, unexpected tourism
potential.
Đất nước này có một tiềm năng lớn về du lịch
chưa được khai thác.

• Without economic policy reforms,
humanitarian aids into education and
healthcare could never achieve their
objectives.
Nếu không có những cải cách về chính sách
kinh tế thì viện trợ nhân đạo trong lĩnh vực
giáo dục và y tế sẽ chẳng bao giờ đạt được
những mục tiêu đã đặt ra cả.

• They have been using increasingly
sophisticated production technology and
management methods.
Họ đã áp dụng những cách thức quản lý và
