EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This internship report regarded to my internship program at Espeed Training
Development and Consultant Center. Not only were the overview of center together
with my internship experiences mentioned but an analysis of English training
program’s quality in Espeed center was also conducted in this report.
To begin with, eight weeks might be not long for me to get used totally with
new working environment but I tried my best to apply knowledge I gained in
University. As a teaching assistant, my responsibilities include managing a group of

students together with choosing and preparing the textbooks. Besides, checking
learners’ assignment is also my main duty. By doing the tasks throughout the
internship period, I myself gained the practical experiences as management, teamwork and communication.
In addition, the report provides an overall picture about the quality of training
English program at Espeed center. A survey of learners’ satisfaction about quality of
training program was conducted. The result indicates that total satisfaction of
learners about foreign teachers, TAs, textbooks and facilities. Nevertheless, they
strongly disagreed with the location of classroom. Besides, the report also mentions
about some challenges Espeed center is facing, namely, lack of professional
measure of learners’ outcome, competition with rivals, and risk of losing skillful
teachers.
In conclusion, so as to limit the major difficulties and challenges, some
solutions and recommendations were discussed, say, restoring the classrooms,
international partnership, and improving the training method.

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION OF ESPEED TRAINING, DEVELOPMENT &

CONSULTANT CENTER

1. Overview of Espeed Center

The teaching of foreign languages has been of great importance throughout the
history and has gained much great importance with the swift globalization turning
the world into a small village. In the last few years, English has undergone
explosive growth; thousands of English language centers have been established all
over the country

(1)

, with an overwhelming majority of learners studying

communication English. Together with those centers, Espeed training and
development center was founded by Mr. Dao Duc Dung on 17th of May 2013.
Espeed center focuses on training communication English which will be
conducted by foreign teachers. After many years of establishment and developing,
eight branches were established in two big cities of Vietnam, namely, Hanoi and Ho
Chi Minh. Furthermore, the center has improved constantly quality of training
program to meet al learners’ needs to complete the mission of helping one million
Vietnamese speak English fluently. With a slogan “make it different”, Espeed center
attempts to become a leading organization issuing international certificates for
different kinds of learners.

2. Organizational Structure

Each organization has its own structure. There are two types of structures;
namely centralization and decentralization. Espeed center is currently following
centralized structure. In a centralized structure, the top layer of management has

most of the decision making power and has tight control over departments. The
following chart illustrates clearly the organizational pattern of Espeed center.

2.3 Number Of Employees

To enlarge the center, it is necessary to focus on strengthening the human

resources. Hence, every year, Espeed center recruits a number of employees to
fulfill the responsibilities. The center currently has nearly 230 full-time and parttime staff. In particular, the Marketing department has totally 100 staff while
Training department has over 120 staff including 50 foreign teachers and 70
teaching assistants. The smallest number of staff belongs to Recruitment department
and Accounting department with 10 staff in total.
2.4 Introduction Of Departments

An organization may not develop without the collaboration of different
departments. Similarly, in Espeed center there are six different departments with
various responsibilities led by a director.
Director
Director’s responsibilities include directing and controlling all activities of
center as marketing, sales, training or accounting. Director also examines the annual
financial statements to make plans for next years.
Marketing department
Marketing department is responsible for advertising and persuading learners of
English to choose Espeed to study. They have to produce new plans and marketing
strategies which are effective to attract students.
Training department
Training department has important role in guaranteeing the quality of training
in Espeed. For example, the training quality is engaged in quality of teachers, and
development of qualified training program... Furthermore, the department is also

10

liable for creating textbooks and learning materials and training new foreign
teachers and new teaching assistants.
The Accounting Department
The duties of accounting department in Espeed are organizing and

summarizing accounting information. They also have to make annual financial
statements based on the data kept record every day.
The Technical Department
The Technical Department is in charge of providing technical support to the
operations as supervising, repairing and maintaining equipment as projectors,
overhead transparency, computers, speakers, and air conditioners in all classrooms.
The Human Resource Department
The responsibilities of human resource department are recruiting, training, and
dismissing employees in the companies. Besides, it establishes a well- informed and
well- organized team of staff to help the center develop considerably.
The Customer Service Department
The customer service department has a significant function in taking care of
customers, solving all their complaints by giving solutions in accordance with
center’s guidelines, regulations and policies.
2.5 Comments On Organizational Structure

Espeed’s organizational structure follows the centralized pattern because of a
wide range of advantages. It is clear that the advantages of centralized pattern are
emphasizing on top- down control, making decisions strongly and decisively.
Moreover, the organizational changes are executed fast, coordinately and
effectively. Besides, centralization creates flexibility to make the organization adapt
easily to new situations as changes in demand of students. Uniformity in action is
also an important benefit of centralized pattern because there is low risk of dissent
or conflicts among departments or offices. In short, Espeed has been following the
centralized pattern due to its outstanding benefits which are suitable for Espeed’s
legal form.
2.6 Nature Of Espeed Center
11

Nature of an organization mentions its legal form and the vision. Espeed
Training Development & Consultant Center was founded in the form of joint-stock
company whose main function is providing the English qualified training courses to
multiple levels of learners. In addition, Espeed’s vision is becoming one of the
leading institutes in Vietnam by setting standards of excellence in innovative
curriculum design, teaching, professional development, and cross-cultural
understanding. In short, Espeed believes that its above-mentioned vision will help
the center achieve its mission and goal.

Product Line
Espeed offers the different English training courses to help learners to
communicate confidently and naturally in a short time. Two main English courses
are currently offered in Espeed; English for Life, and English for Tourism.
The very first course is English for Life related to 5 main topics including Get
to Know, At the Cafe, At the Restaurant, On Bargaining, Job Interview. Students
study these topics in 3 months with 100% of native teachers achieved the
prestigiously international teaching certificates as TESOL, DELTA, CELTA. After
finishing one topic, learners will practice in the real situations; for example, talking
to foreign visitors in Hoan Kiem Lake, bargaining at food fair in Espeed. After one
course, learners may communicate English confidently.

12

English for Tourism is a transit from English for Life course. At this course,
students are equipped with a great deal of knowledge about tourism places in Hanoi
by experiencing two levels. At level one, learners are provided information of
Sword Lake, and the Old quarters. In addition, Ho Chi Minh complex, Temple of
Literature, Hoa lo prison are the training fields of level two. After completing two
levels, students may be aware of those places.
In brief, two main English courses in Espeed help students improve their
English for daily life and create an environment to practice English.
5 Competitors
English educational system in Vietnam has been growing dramatically. Various
English centers, public and private have been set up which creates the fierce
competition toward Espeed center. In specific, a large quantity of foreign and joint

venture, language centers of universities, professional associations, private
enterprises which teach English and use it as the medium of communication have
been established throughout Vietnam

(1)

. It can be seen the presence of British

Council, American Apollo, Langmaster.... These teaching centers offer diversified
courses and different levels of learners. Together with offline rivals, there are a large
number of online competitors as Topica, Lingoda.com.... which provide the most
convenient English courses for busy people. To sum up, the appearance of offline
and online English training organizations triggers a high pressure for Espeed to
exist in Vietnam.

13

CHAPTER 2
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION
Internships are known for offering students the opportunity to apply their
knowledge in real environments. At the same time, they will also develop skills
which will help them perform better at their future jobs. I am one of one of such
lucky students to have chance of internship at Espeed center.
1. Starting And Ending Dates Of Internship
The internship lasted 8 weeks from 15/02/2016 to 10/04/2016 under the
supervision of the Training Manager, Ms Pham Nhan.
2. Training Department
Department of Training was founded together with Espeed’s establishment.
Training department plays a very significant role in development of Espeed center

with different positions. For instance, the head of department is training manager
who is liable for managing foreign teachers, TAs, designers of textbook and
learning material.
This chart below shows the organizational of Training department:
Chart 2: Organizational Chart of Training Department

Training department is in charge of guaranteeing the English training
activities together with developing the new textbooks and other teaching materials.
In specific, the manager is liable for controlling the general training activities while
foreign teachers and teaching assistants have responsibilities to teach and take care
14

of students directly. In addition, designing textbooks and teaching materials is
another task of department. In short, training department is becoming an
indispensible part of Espeed center by maintaining training activities.
3. Activities Performed During The Internship
My job was a teaching assistant in training department through 8 weeks from
15/02/2016 to 10/04/2016. Teaching assistant is responsible for managing a class of
20 students, choosing textbooks and lesson plan, and checking students’ assignment.

Firstly, managing a group of 20 students is the main task of a TA. In
particular, the teaching assistant has to come to class early to set up everything and
make classroom ready as preparing computer, handouts, overhead projector and
overhead transparency. Furthermore, the TA involves in checking attendance of
students every lesson, checking students’ homework completion and making reports
after each lesson. Thus, leadership & communication skills and enthusiastic and
friendly characteristics are very essential for a TA.
Secondly, participating to choose the textbooks and lesson plans is another
task of the teaching assistant. The TAs has to support a group of writers in designing
teaching materials as typing handouts, or making Powerpoint files. In addition, the
TA is in charge of finding the mistakes in the textbooks or handouts and making the
comments to improve them. The TA therefore must have research and planning
skills and especially computer skills as using some software: Word, Powerpoint,
Mindmap...
Finally, checking students’ assignment and interacting online with them are
also responsibilities of a TA. After each lesson, the TA has to post homework and
check students’ homework every day. Particularly, the TA checks pronunciation in
students’ records, gives them comments, and helps them correct the mistakes when
attending the class. Moreover, students have their short writing assignment checked
and corrected by the TA in every lesson.
In conclusion, not only is the teaching assistant good at English but he or she
must have other vitally soft skills as leadership, teamwork skills, problem solving
skills to manage a class, monitor learning activities after class. Hence, teaching
assistant is a really enjoyable and interesting job.

4. Personal Achievements

During the interndhip period at the center, I had obtained a great deal of
interseting and meaningful lessons from my works.
Firstly, I was accessible to a modern educational organization so I have been
aware of English training program and its operation. In addition, I realized that the
student centerd method applied by Espeed is very good approach. This method is

becoming the international trend of training English. While working in Espeed
center, I was interacted daily with native speakers, therefore my English ability was
improved remarkably. Similarly, writing weekly reports to manager was an
opportunity for me to enhance my writing skill. In brief, awareness of an
organzation’s operation, learner- centered method, and some academic skills are my
vital achievements throughout the internship time.
Another worthy noting experience is that I learnt how to manage a group of
learners. Interacting with 20 people every day not only makes me more confident
but it also fosters my leadership and communication skill. At the same time, how to
collaborate with co-workers was also an important lesson which enhances
significantly my team-working skill. Moreover, my technical skills as excel,
powerpoint were improved considerably after taking part in supporting the design
of textbooks. In summary, the overall experience in internship period provides me a
wide range of useful knowledge and skills for my future career.

16

In conclusion, being a trainee in Espeed center help me store a quantity of
knowledge together with foster both academic and soft skills.

CHAPTER 3
CRITICAL ANALYSIS
The success of an educational organization depends on many factors as
training programs, teachers, infrastructure, international trend, learners, and vision.
To measure the performance of Espeed center, these factors need to be considerate.
In this report, these factors are analyzed in detail. Espeed has applied the learnercentered method so a survey of learners’ satisfaction was conducted to identify the

strengths and difficulties of Espeed.
The survey was conducted in this report consisting of 5 questions focusing on
the students’ satisfaction about Espeed’s quality of foreign teachers, TAs,
infrastructure, training program, and location of classrooms. The participants of this
survey include students completed the courses at Espeed center. Out of 530
participants, 490 answered the questions completely, while others answered

2

questions.
1. Strengths & Opportunities
1.1 Human Resource
a. Enthusiastic, High-Qualified Foreign Teachers
Based on the survey have shown that 51% of learners strongly agreed that the
foreign teachers have wide knowledge and good preparation (chart 3). Similarly, 31
% of students agreed with quality of oversea teachers whilst only 2% of students
were strongly in disagreement with that. Thus, having energetic, well-prepared and
well-informed oversea teachers is one of Espeed’s strong points. Espeed succeeded
in founding a strong team of foreign teachers who had international teaching
certificates. Thanks to native English speakers, Espeed gradually meets the students’
requirement

Chart 3: Foreign Teachers' Enthusiasm And Preparation
b. Energetic, Friendly And Knowledgeable Teaching Assistants

18

The survey shows that almost learners satisfied highly with quality of teaching
assistants in Espeed center. In specific, 67 % of learners strongly agreed with TAs’

excellent performance. Hence, setting up a team of friendly, animated, welleducated teaching assistants is a crucial factor to create the success of Espeed. The
TAs take care of students not only at class but also at home. Without teaching
assistants, learners cannot easily interact with foreign teachers in the class.
Therefore, a strong team of inspirers can make Espeed different from other centers.
Chart 4: Quality Of Teaching Assistants
1.2 Training Program
a. Picturesque And Easy-Understanding Textbook

When asked if textbooks would be colorful and easy to understand, 85 % of
them replied positively. Textbooks were designed with a lot of vivid pictures to
describe exactly the meaning of words so as to match with learners’ ability. For
example, lesson 2 “At the cafe” was designed with many beverage pictures to help
students remember all names of drinks or furniture at the coffee shop. In addition,
there are a number of examples for one word in order that students can use that new
word in the right situations.
Chart 5: Textbooks
b. Convenient Class Schedule

Class attendance, job, and family obligations are constant challenges for many
students. Therefore, in addition to the traditional day-time class periods, the center
has offered classes during the late afternoon and evenings to match with the daily
routines of students. It is optional for learners to choose any shifts which are
convenient for them. This approach to scheduling is typical of metropolitan center
as it meets the varied needs of the learners of an urban area.

1.3 Modern Infrastructure

Chart 6: Satisfaction About Facilities

Seventy percent of learners who responded to the survey stated that the
infrastructure was an important element in their decision to study here. In reality,
each branch is well facilitated with 10 classrooms, one staff room, and one library
along with sanitation facilities. Moreover, each classroom is equipped with modern
equipment as an air-conditioner, a speaker, a computer, an overhead transparency,
and an overhead- projector. Besides, classrooms contain comfortable benches for
students and a stage that is adequate visibility for foreign teachers. In short, highquality facilities create an effective learning environment for learners.
1.4 Increasing Demand of Studying English
In the context of integration and globalization, there is a disproportionate
supply and demand of English training courses

(2)

. With a population of over 90

million, of whom a sizable proportion have a strong desire to learn English, the
demand for English language training outstrips the supply of native speakers or
non-native outstanding speakers. Thus, Espeed center has opportunities to fill up
this gap by offering the English training course with 100% of native speakers.
2. Difficulties & Challenges

Besides the striking strengths mentioned above, Espeed center also faces some
difficulties and challenges during the operational process.
2.1 Absence of Effective Assessment Methods
To check the success of a training program, it is essential to have an outcome
measure. Like many other centers, Espeed currently lacks a professional method to
measure learner’s ability. In specific, after a completion of one course, students will
only take a writing test designed by the center to evaluate their improvements.
However, the test which does not mention completely cannot assess exactly the
20

students’ progress. Thus, there should be effective solutions to solve the issue of
lacking professional measure methods.
2.2 Inconvenient Location of Classrooms
The chart demonstrates the remarkable dissatisfaction of learners about
classrooms’ location. It is clear that 75 % of students disagreed with the position of
classrooms where are located at the noisy places with poor ventilation. Furthermore,
in spite of being located at city center the parking plot is very far from the
classrooms. Therefore it takes a long time for students to walk from there to
studying places. To conclude, the classroom sites triggering the substantial

inconvenience for learners need replacing.

Chart 7: Satisfaction about Location of Classrooms

2.3 Growing Competition With Other English Training Centers

One of apparent challenges is non-stop competition among English training
institutions. Competition from other centers-including competition from other
online programs-was also mentioned frequently as a threat that Espeed will need to
address. In addition, the development of an English center with co-operating with
oversea countries is becoming an inevitable trend. Thus, without movement and
timely changes Espeed center may be left behind the game.
2.4 Risk Of Losing High-Qualified Foreign Teachers
Holding on to a workforce of high-quality teachers is a challenge. Every year,
many teachers leave the profession with few months on their job. To further
exacerbate this situation, attrition rates are higher among: certificated foreign
teachers, those with more experiences. The teachers who leave the profession cite a
variety of reasons, including lack of support from center leadership, lack of
empowerment, feelings of isolation, and undesirable teaching assignments.

21

Moreover, many oversea teachers come to Vietnam to teach English in short
time and then they return their countries provoking the loss of foreign teachers.
These phenomena can result in danger of losing competent foreign teachers at
Espeed center.
3. Solutions

With the aim of solving difficulties mentioned above to improve the quality of

English training program in Espeed, some solutions have been illustrated in this
part.
3.1 Updating Effective Methods to Assess Learners’ Ability
Assessment plays a very important role in teaching and learning in every
educational organization. Nevertheless, measure methods of Espeed have not
recognized popularly. In particular, learners are measured by participating a paper
test instead of be assessed with 4 skills. Therefore, it is vital for Espeed center to
cooperate with international organizations, namely, British Council to apply a
professional method to check learners’ performance. In specific, four skills of
learners should be tested at the same time rather than only one.
3.2. Changing the classrooms to decrease the noise
A handful of research studies confirm that noise has a negative effect on a
learner's ability to learn (3). Therefore, Espeed’s classrooms currently located near
noisy karaoke shops need to be removed to another place. They should be placed at
the quiet areas. In addition, without removing, the classrooms must be restored as
designing the soundproofing walls with the aim of reducing the noise.
Simultaneously, the parking plots have to be shifted to the most convenient place
for students. In conclusion, the classrooms should be improved to limit the noise
and create convenience for learners.
3.3 Actively Changing Teaching Methods to Improve Competitive Ability
A classroom research study showed that immediately after a lesson, students
recalled 70% of the information presented in the first ten minutes and only 20% of
that from the last ten minutes (McKeachie 1999)

(4)

. Thus, Espeed ought to apply

active learning method in the class to attract learners’ attention throughout the

22

lesson. the methods are recalling the prior knowledge, responding to the questions,
and explaining written materials... In short, new effective teaching methods should
be applied to improve the competitive ability with other rivals.
3.3 Increasing Favorable Conditions To Attract The Skillful Employees
So as to avoid losing the excellent and experienced foreign teachers and
skillful staff, Espeed had better release more attractive conditions. For example,
their salary ought to be calculated on the base of their ability or subsidizing the
travel expenses, or raising salary for staff working effectively. Besides, Espeed also
can create a friendly and sporty working environment by establishing a gymnastic
room in every branch so all staff can keep fit easily. To sum up, to maintain an
effective teaching workforce, raising the favorable conditions to staff is completely
essential.

23

CHAPTER 4
CONCLUSIONS AND IMPROVEMENTS
1. CONCLUSIONS
In summary, the report emphasizes on a critical analysis of training program to
clarify Espeed center’s strengths, opportunities, difficulties and challenges.
Similarly, my achievements also were mentioned in this report.
To begin with, human resources, infrastructure and flexible training program
are the striking strengths of Espeed. On the contrary, the report also found the main
factors affected to the quality of training program in Espeed. For example, the
absence of professional measure of learners’ performance and the inconvenient
position of classrooms are the factors impacted on the quality. In the same way,

other factors make an influence on training quality are the competition from other
centers and the risk of losing the competent foreign teachers.
In addition, after completing the internship period at Espeed, I have awareness
of the model of an English training center accompanied with how it operates. In
addition, I myself achieved a wide range of practical knowledge and useful working
experiences, more importantly applying the theory studied at university into the real
situations. All of knowledge and acquirements will make me more confident,
flexible and dynamic when entering a new environment.
To conclude, an analysis of training program accompanied by my personal
achievements was demonstrated apparently in this report.

24

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT
2.1 For Board of managers
In order to run the center successfully, it is vital that the board of managers
2.

should improve the management skills.
Firstly, updating regularly knowledge and the international trend of training
English should be implemented. To be precise, the new teaching methods should be
applied. In the same way, it is suggested to update the training program to meet the
learners’ demand.
Secondly, it is recommended to hold the training courses for oversea teachers
and teaching assistants to enhance their teaching ability. Furthermore, launching the
new policy to recruit and maintain the high quality employees is also advised, to be
precise, having the long term contracts with senior teachers and competent TAs.
In conclusion, it is advisory for the board of managers to adapt with the new
trend of training by enhancing the essential knowledge and skills.

2.2 For Students
In every educational organization, learners seem to be the most important
partners. Beside the attempt from the center, students also should be active in the
learning process.
At first, students are recommended to maintain the regular and punctual
attendance to the class. Moreover, learners had better prepare lessons carefully
before attending the class. Self- studying is also significant to students to foster their
English skills.
Next, more interactions with the employers of center may protect the benefits
of learners. For instance, if there are any problems with teachers or TAs students
can give feedbacks to customer service department or even board of managers to
find the solutions.
In short, learners ought to be more active in self-studying and interacting with
the center to gain the most benefits.
