7. adverbial clauses of concession:
_ Adverbial clauses of concession are use to express ideas or action that are not expected. The
informationin the independent clause indicates a concession or un expected result of something
described in the independent clause.
_ Adverbial clauses of cocession introduce an element of contrast into a sentence and are sometime
called “contrast clauses’. In this type, the information in the first clause is the derect opposite of the
information in the second clause of the sentence.
_They are introduced by the following conjuctions: although, eventhough, considering, though, even
if, even though, whether, or, while, where as, what ever, how ever, whom ever, no matter how…
_ These answer the question “even htough what?”
Example:
She never complainted though the work was hard.
Although he had een prevented from studying by illness, he passed the exam.
What ever may happened, he remains impatient.
Nottice
:
_ However combines with numerous adjectives and adverbs:
However urgly she is, I also love her so much.
_ No matter can combine with question work( who, when, where,…) to introduce clauses of
concession:
Nomatter who he is, I will visit him.
_ Compounds with_ever can introduce clauses of concession in the same way as no matter:
whatever I say, I seem to say the wrong thing.
_ Using may informal style in place of the present after all conjuctions introducing clauses of
cocession:
Whatever you may think, Im going ahead with my intention.
_As
and though can be used after some adjectives, adverbs to introduce clauses of concession in
