Unit 13: films and cinema
I. OBJECTIVES
1. Educational aim: To help students write a description of a film
2. Knowledge
a. General knowledge
- Students learn about the organization of a description of a film.
b. Language: Adjectives and verb forms often used to describe a film
3. Skills
a. Main skill: writing
b. Sub skills: reading, speaking, listening
II. METHODS: integrated, mainly Communicative
III. TEACHING AIDS: Pictures of some famous films, famous actors and
actresses
IV. PROCEDURE
Teacher’s Activities Students’ Activities
Warm-up ( 4mn )
Teacher shows students some pictures
of the film ‘Titanic’ and asks
questions:
1. What is the name of the film?
2. What is it about?
3. Who are the main characters?
Students look at the pictures and answer
the questions. Students’ answers may vary.
Suggested answers:
1. It is Titanic.
2. It is about two lovers who first met
each other while they were on board.
3. They are Jack Dawson and Rose
DeWitt Bukater.

Pre-writing ( 12 mn )
Task 1
Teacher explains some new words by
showing pictures and giving examples:
- tragic / ‘træʤik /(adj.): sad
Eg: Romeo and Juliet is a tragic love
story.
- sink / siŋk /(v.) sank, sunk: go
down
- luxury / ‘l ۸ k ∫әri /(n.) expensive
and enjoyable things (food, furniture,
etc.)
- iceberg / ‘aisbЗ:g /(n.): an
extremely large mass of ice floating
in the sea
- engaged / in’geiʤd /(adj.): having
agreed to marry someone
Eg: She is engaged to Peter.
Teacher has students read these words
in chorus and individually.
Teacher asks students to read the
passage in silence and then answer the
following questions (5 minutes):
1. What is the name of the film?
2. What kind of film is Titanic?
3. What is it about?
4. Where is it made?
5. What is it based on?
6. Who is/are the main character(s)?

7. What do you know about Jack
Dawson?
8. Does the film have a happy or a
sad ending?
Students listen.
Students repeat after teacher in chorus and
individually.
Students read the passage in silence and
then answer the questions individually.
Suggested answers:
1. It’s Titanic.
2. It is a love story film.
3. It is about the sinking of a luxury ship
on its first voyage across the Atlantic
Ocean.
4. It is made in America.
5. It is based on the true story of the
Titanic disaster that occurred in 1912.
6. They are Jack Dawson and Rose
Dewitt Bukater.
7. He is a young and generous character.
8. It has a sad ending.

Teacher asks students to work in pairs,
read the passage again and study its
content and organization.
(The organization of a description of a
film may vary. However, the order
presented here is the usual one.)
Teacher walks around the class and

offers help when necessary. Then
Teacher selects a few students to give
the answers.
While-writing (10 mn)
Task 2
Teacher asks each student to write a
description of a film that he/she likes
most using the guidelines given
before.
Post-writing (10 mn)
Teacher chooses two students to
present their writings on the board and
some students present theirs orally.
Teacher gives suggestions and
corrections.
Students sit in pairs, read the passage and
discuss the organization of the description
of a film.
Suggested answers:
1. Name of the film
2. Name of the kind of film
3. The content of the film
4. The setting of the film
5. The main characters
6. The ending
7. The reasons why students love the film
→ The present tense is often used.
Students work individually.
Students’ writings may be different
Suggested description of the film ‘Harry

Potter’:
My favorite film is Harry Potter. Harry
Potter is a fiction film. It is about a witch
boy named Harry Porter fighting against
the evil switch- Voldermot. The film is
made in America. It is based on the true
story “Harry Potter” of J.K Rowling. The
main characters are Harry Potter and his
two close friends- Hermione and Ron.
Harry Potter is a kind and talent witch.
During the time he studies at Howard
school, he and his friends fight against

Consolidation ( 2mn)
Teacher asks students to tell things
they should mention to when
describing a film.
Homework (1mn)
Teacher asks students to write the
paragraph again making use of
teacher’s suggestions and corrections.
Voldermot and his alliances bravely.
Although they stare death in the face many
times, they succeed in killing Voldermot. I
love this film because it
shows us the importance of friendship and
the power of justice.

Students listen to the teacher.
