Throughout history, women have always aimed for the recognized place in (31)_____________.

Guided by their own (32)______________ of knowledge and expertise, women like Marie Curie in science,
mary Wollstonecraft in literary writing, Simone de Beauvois in philosophical existentialist debate, and
Marie Stopes in medicine, to name a few, have brought about an awareness of the role of the women in any
walks of life. These women have helped redefine and (33)_____________ the nature of women’s
place in society. Today the spread of global women’s organizations and the impact of women’s

have the same need. The need of the woman who stays at home and raise children will differ widely from
the woman who works outside. Nonetheless, in the extensive field of equal opportunities, it would
be good to know that access in given to both with equal measure according to the true value of
respective abilities. It also would be good to know that the woman at home is recognized as a valued

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
Although management principles have been implemented since ancient times, most management
scholars trace the beginning of modern management thought back to the early 1900s, beginning with the
pioneering work of Frederick Taylor (1856-1915) Taylor was the first person to study work scientifically.
He is most famous for introducing techniques of time and motion study, differential piece rate
systems, and for systematically specializing the work of operating employees and managers. Along with
other pioneers such as Frank and Lillian Gilbreth, Taylor set the stage, labeling his philosophy and
methods “scientific management’. At that time, his philosophy, which was concerned with productivity,
but which was often misinterpreted as promoting worker interests at the expense of management, was in
marked contrast to the prevailing industrial norms of worker exploitation.
The time and motion study concepts were popularized by Frank and Lillian Gilbreth. The Gilbreths
had12 children. By analyzing his children’s dishwashing and bed makingchores, this pioneer efficiency
expert, Frank Gilbreth, hit on principles whereby workers could eliminate waste motion. He was
memorialized by two of his children in their 1949 book called “Cheaper by the Dozen”.
The Gilbreth methods included using stop watches to time worker movements and special
tools (cameras and special clocks) to monitor and study worker performance, and also involved identificati
on of “therbligs” (Gilbreth spelled backwards) -basic motions used in production jobs. Many of these
motions and accompanying times have been used to determine how long it should take a skilled worker to
perform a given job. In this way an industrial engineer can get a handle on the approximate time it
should take to produce a product or provide a service. However, use of work analysis in this way is

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 43 to 50.
Most people can remember a phone number for up to thirty seconds. When this short amount of
time elapses, however, the numbers are erased from the memory. How did the information get there in the
first place? Information that makes its way to the short term memory (STM) does so via the sensory storage
area. The brain has a filter which only allows stimuli that is of immediate interest to pass on to the STM,
also known as the working memory.
There is much debate about the capacity and duration of the short term memory. The most accepted
theory comes from George A. Miller, a cognitive psychologist who suggested that humans can remember

approximately seven chunks of information. A chunk is defined as a meaningful unit of information, such
as a word or name rather than just a letter or number. Modern theorists suggest that one can increase the
capacity of the short term memory by chunking, or classifying similar information together. By organizing
information, one can optimize the STM, and improve the chances of a memory being passed on to long

term storage.
When making a conscious effort to memorize something, such as information for an exam, many
people engage in "rote rehearsal". By repeating something over and over again, one is able to keep a
memory alive. Unfortunately, this type of memory maintenance only succeeds if there are no interruptions.
As soon as a person stops rehearsing the information, it has the tendency to disappear. When a pen and
paper are not handy, people often attempt to remember a phone number by repeating it aloud. If the
doorbell rings or the dog barks to come in before a person has the opportunity to make a phone call, he will
likely forget the number instantly. Therefore, rote rehearsal is not an efficient way to pass information from
the short term to long term memory. A better way is to practice "elaborate rehearsal". This involves
assigning semantic meaning to a piece of information so that it can be filed along with other pre-existing
long term memories.
Encoding information semantically also makes it more retrievable. Retrieving information can be
done by recognition or recall. Humans can easily recall memories that are stored in the long term memory
and used often; however, if a memory seems to be forgotten, it may eventually be retrieved by prompting.
The more cues a person is given (such as pictures), the more likely a memory can be retrieved. This is why
multiple choice tests are often used for subjects that require a lot of memorization.
Question 43: According to the passage, how do memories get transferred to the STM ?
A. They revert from the long term memory.
B. They are filtered from the sensory storage area.
C. They get chunked when they enter the brain.
D. They enter via the nervous system.
Question 44: All of the following are mentioned as places in which memories are stored EXCEPT the:
A. STM
B. long term memory
C. sensory storage area
D. maintenance area.
Question 45: . Why does the author mention a dog's bark?
A. To give an example of a type of memory
B. To provide a type of interruption
C. To prove that dogs have better memories than humans

D. To compare another sound that is loud like a doorbell.
Question 46: The word elaborate in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ____________ .
A. complex
