only to each question. (10 marks)
WHICH CAREER?
1. MEDICINE
A medical career means years of studying and dedication and although it is a prestigious career, doctors
must be prepared to sacrifice some of their private life. To become a doctor you need to spend years at
university before working in a hospital. During the first few years of a medical career a doctor has to be on
call day and night. Then, depending on the area of specialization, for example they could choose to become a
surgeon, a doctor may start to make a lot of money. This ability to make money and the fact that doctors have

a high standing in society explains why many parents want their children to become doctors.
2. TEACHING
You will never become rich if you choose to enter the teaching profession, but teaching can be a very
rewarding career and of course there are the long vacations. You should be prepared to work with children
who may not be interested in school, as well as those who want to study. Becoming a teacher is more than just
getting a teaching qualification at university, it requires a certain talent to get your ideas across to young
people whilst making it enjoyable.
This is probably the teacher’s hardest task, making lessons fun, but still making sure students are
learning.
3. PLUMBING
Although it is a very important job, many young people do not think of plumbing as a possible career
choice. Yet society always needs plumbers and there is often a shorteage of good, qualified people around
which means they can change high prices for their services. Not only can plumbers earn good money, they are
also guaranteed constant work and they can choose to work the hours that suit them.
In fact being a skilled worker is very advantageous in today’s society. Young people should accept that
a university education does not always guarantee a reasonable income, being a good plumber does.
4. AVIATION
Though it is consisdered a glamorous, high-paying job, being a pilot is very demanding work. First the
training is very extensive and pilots must have passed a medical before they can even start to learn. Pilots who

responsible job as the lives of hundreds of people may depend on the pilot’s ability to think and act quickly
under pressure. Also, a pilot has to spend a lot of time traveling away from home and family, which may
account for the fact that there are so few women commercial pilots. It is an ideal job for a person who wants
stable family life.

many women see army life as a challenging and interesting career. Recruiting centers advertise the army as a
place where soldiers can learn a valuable trade, such as engineering or computing, which will be useful if they
choose to leave the army. Soldiers must also be willing to travel, even though many of their destinations will
