UNIT 1: FRIENDSHIP

A. READING

You've got a friend!
by Carole King

Work in pairs: Read the poem and answer the question
When you're down and troubled
And you need a helping hand,

And nothing, no, nothing's going right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night;
You just call out my name
And you know, wherever I am,
I'll come running, to see you again
Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall,
All you've got to do is call,
And I'll be there, yes I will, You've got a friend!

What do you think of the friend in the poem?
She/He is willing to help friend in any circumstances

UNIT 1: FRIENDSHIP

A. READING

II. WHILE YOU READ:

Task 3: Answer the questions:
1. What’s the first quality for true friendship and what does it tell you?
It is unselfishness. It tells us/ me that a person who is concerned only
with his/ her own interests and feelings can’t be a true friend (Para 1).
2.Why are changeable and uncertain people incapable of true friendship?
Because they take up an interest with enthusiasm, but they’re soon
tired of it, and they feel the attraction of some new object (L2–3, Para 3)
3. What’s the third quality for true friendship and what does it tell you?
It is loyalty. It tells us/ me that the two friends must be loyal to each
other, and they must know each other so well that there can be no
suspicions between them. (Line 1-3, Para 4 ).

II. WHILE YOU READ:

Task 3: Answer the questions:
4. Why must there be a mutual trust between friends?
Because if not, people can not feel safe when telling the other their
secrets. (Line 1 – 3, Para 5 )
5. Why can’t people who talk too much keep a friend long?
Because they can’t keep a secret, either of theirs or of other’s. (Line 3
– 4, Para 5).
6. What’s the last quality for true friendship and what does it tell you?

It is sympathy. It tells us/ me that to be a true friend one must
sympathize with his/her friend. Where there is no mutual sympathy
between friends, there is no true friendship. (Para 6 )
