• Uses:to express things or actions that are
unreal (not true or not possible) in the
present or in the future
• Ex:
1. She wouldn’t be fat if she didn’t eat a lot of
sugar.
2. If we had a map, we could easily find their
house.
3. If I won the lottery, I might give all the money
to charity.
4. If you were a flower, what would you be?

Form:
• If S + V(2/-ed) , S + could/would/might+ V( bare-inf)
• Or S + could/would/ might + V (bare-inf) if S + V(2/-ed)
• I would buy a new car if I had a lot of money.
If Peter had a garden, he could grow roses.

Note: If + I/he/she/it/they/we + WERE, S +
could/would/might + V( bare-inf)
Ex: “If they were to enter our market, we'd have big
problems.

=> a. If Peter were a better architect, I would study to be a
fashion designer.
=> b. I might hire him to design my new house if I were the
store owner.
