When we were in England last year, I went fishing with my friend, Peter. Early in the morning, we were

three ducklings paddling cheerfully behind her. As we watched them there was a sudden swirl in the water.
We caught a glimpse of the vicious jaws of a pike-a fish which is rather like a fresh water shark and one of the
ducklings was dragged below the surface.
This incident made Peter furious. He vowed to catch the pike. On three successive mornings we returned to
the vicinity and used several different kinds of baits. On the third day Peter was lucky. Using an artificial frog
as bait, he managed to hook the monster. There was a desperate fight but Peter was determined to capture the
pike and he succeeded. When he had got it ashore and killed it, he weighed the fish and found that it scaled

Agriculture in the West and South of the United States has traditionally been supported by migrant workers
who migrate or move from area to area according to the crops that need harvesting. Many Chinese, Filipino,

and Mexican immigrants became migrant workers when they first arrived in the United States. Often they had
problems with the English language or skills that they could immediately use in the new country.
A person looking objectively at the living conditions of these workers might say that their way of life was
little better than slavery. They were housed in substandard conditions, received wages far below the minimum,
and had no medical or insurance benefits. The migrant workers had no labour unions that could bargain for
better wages, better hours, or improved working conditions. They had no money and no power with which to
bargain with their employers. Employers were making fortunes by the sweat of their workers’ brows. It took
an idealistic, determined young man named Cesar Chavez to change the plight of the migrant worker forever.

A gold rush is the rapid relocation of large numbers of people to an area where gold has been discovered.

the potential for overnight affluence. The greatest gold rush in United States history was the California Gold

niners rushed in from all over the world.
In just two years, the population of California increased from about 26,000 to 380,000. Conse-quently,
California was officially admitted to the union as state in September of 1850.The free- spending style of the
