III. SUGGESTED IDEAS:
Modern society has successfully ensured equality of opportunity for men and women.
Nowadays women are no longer restricted to doing household' chores or raising children
only. They are no longer viewed as inferior creatures by men, and most modern societies
have ceased to regard them as second-rate citizens. Now women enjoy the same education
opportunities as in most parts of the world. Women can succeed in any job that men have
ever done.
More and more women have gone to work and proved themselves capable and excellent
workers. They have contributed their share to the family budget and the development of the
nation.
When the mother goes to work, the financial situation of the family will improve
because the burden of supporting the family will be shared by both working parents.

Women will feel economically independent by going to work. She will have more status
in the family and more active participation in the decision-making process as regards the
family affairs.
The husband is an important factor in helping his wife in doing her professional work
and fulfilling' her household duties. He should be thoughtful and considerate towards her.

He should encourage and exhort her to accomplish her job satisfactorily and give her advice
and guidance in times of troubles or difficulties. He should share ill the housework and the
job of child care so as to 8ive her more time and energy .for her professional Interests.
Other members of the family such as the couple's parents should also show
consideration and appreciation of the working mother's professional interest. An altitude of
sympathy and encouragement will be a great source of help in enabling her to complete the
dual task of being a housewife and a wage-earner.
The wife should, first and foremost, win the husband‘s consent and sympathy in making
arrangements for her to pursue her career. At the same lime she shouldn't neglect her wifely
duties such as doing the household chores or raising children. The husband may help to
some extent, or they may have a house servant (home help), or buy household appliances
such as washing machines, dishwashers to lessen the amount of housework.
With an understanding husband, a fair and just share in doing the household duties, love
and mutual respect as well as reciprocal help and interest in each other's career, the wife
will be able to pursue her career and at the same time successfully preserve her traditional
image as wife and mother.

II.

SUGGESTED IDEAS:

Everyone has a number of acquaintances; but no one has many friend~. For true
intimate friendship is not common; and there are many people who seem to be incapable of it.
For a friendship to be intimate and lasting, both the friends must have some very special
qualities.
First comes unselfish love, which is the very essence of friendship. A man who is
engrossed in his own interests and feelings may, no doubt like to have an unselfish friend who
will admire 'him, serve him and always study his interests. But friendship is a two-sided affair
Page 7 of 65

and lives by give-and-take and no friendship can last long which is all give on one side and all
take on the other. A selfish person is incapable of true friendship. The love and service must be
mutual.
Constancy is another important condition of friendship. But some people are
constitutionally fickle they take up an interest with enthusiasm but they soon tire of it and feel
the attraction of some new object. Such changeable and uncertain people are constitutionally
incapable of a lifelong friendship with anyone. Two friends must be loyal to each other, and
they must know each other so well that there can be no suspicions between them. We do not
think much of a man that dares not stand up for his friend when he is criticized behind his back;
nor of the man who readily believes rumor and gossip against his friend. Suspicious natures,
and those who are easily influenced by reports and whispers, can never make good friends.
There must be implicit confidence between friends, so that each can feel that he can tell
the other his most intimate secrets without any fear of his being misunderstood' or betrayed.
But there are talkative and communicative people, who cannot keep a secret, either their own
or those of others to save their lives; and such will never keep a friend long.
Loyalty, There must be perfect sympathy between friends - sympathy with each other‘s aims,
likes, joys, sorrows, pursuits and pleasures. And where such mutual sympathy does not exist,
friendship is impossible. There is "a friend that sticks closer than a brother."
III.

QUESTIONS TO DISCUSS:

b. What are the qualities of a good friend?
c. How can you recognize she or he is your good friend?
d. What do you think about this saying: ―a friend in need is a friend indeed‖?
e. Should you lend your friend money?
f. Do you need a friend in your life?

IV.

CONCLUSION:

Unit 3: Love
Warm up:

TRUE LOVE
Moses Mendelssohn, the grandfather of the well-known German composer, was far from being
handsome. Along with a rather short stature, he had a grotesque hunchback.

One day, he visited a merchant in Hamburg who had a lovely daughter named Frumtje. Moses
fell hopelessly in love with her. But Frumtje was repulsed by his misshapen appearance.
When it came time for him to leave, Moses gathered his courage and climbed the stairs to her
room to take one last opportunity to speak with her. She was a vision of heavenly beauty, but
caused him deep sadness by her refusal to look at him. After several attempts at conversation,
Moses shyly asked, "Do you believe marriages are made in heaven?"
"Yes," she answered, still looking at the floor. "And do you?"
"Yes I do," he replied. "You see, in heaven at the birth of each boy, the Lord announces which

girl he will marry. When I was born, my future bride was pointed out to me. Then the Lord
added, 'But your wife will be humpbacked. Right then and there I called out, 'Oh Lord, a
humpbacked woman would be a tragedy. Please, Lord, give me the hump and let her be
beautiful.'"
Then Frumtje looked up into his eyes and was stirred by some deep memory. She reached out
and gave Mendelssohn her hand and later became his devoted wife.
In love the paradox occurs that two beings become one and yet remain two.

SUGGESTED IDEAS:

In love, we never has room for failure. If you do not have the luck to be responded to
love - that does not mean that you were lost. When in love with one of his heart, I will never
tasted
Most people in over the world think that love is everything. It‘s true. All of them can‘t

live without love. We always need someone next to me, take care of you, encourage, and share
all sadness or happiness. And that person is my girlfriend or boyfriend even husband or wife.
Therefore, love is never end and it always a popular topic which many composers and writer
use for their works. Love is a strong feeling that you have when you like somebody so much.
Love is a feeling of a strong affection and attraction for somebody. There are some feelings of
love: sad, fun, missing, angry, jealous, happy, upset, and so on.
Love is something you can't really explain. It's something that's just special and
personal, and not the same as any other two people's. For me, love is waking up in the morning,
and sleeping at night with him on my mind. It's feeling like he's the only person in the world
worth looking at, it's melting at the sound of his voice or his laugh, and the little smile on his
face when you do something stupid. It's always having him on your mind, and always missing
him when you're not with him, and not wanting to be with anyone else. It's like, feeling
butterflies in your stomach every time you see them and feeling like the most special girl in the
world knowing someone as perfect as him would look at you twice, and tell you he loves you.
It's so much more than that, but I can't explain how it feels. But whatever it is, it's both the best
and the worst thing in the world.
Love is when you feel like nothing else in the world matters but this person. Love is
when this person is always on your mind and pops up in your head at the most random times.
Love is when you don't think you could live without this person in your life. Love is
happiness...
Love is something that one does not have a form, but it makes us feel happy or
miserable.
It can connect two strange people together. LOVE is the most easiest and childish way
to express deep feelings....
LOVE is interpersonal relationship with romantic overtones..
Interpersonal love is most closely associated with interpersonal relationships. Such love might
exist between family members, friends, and couples. You can give without loving, but you can
never love without giving. Sacrificial love requires that we give what we value most: our
hearts, minds, souls, and strength. Real love does not always follow our natural inclinations; it
is not an impulse from feelings. Love is something we crave, something we want, and when we

have it, we're full of joy, it seems like our life is perfect. When that love is torn away from us,
our mood goes down into the darkest pit, we feel miserable and it hurts as hell.

VIII. CONCLUSION:
Love is an important part of the life. No one can live without love. In addition, there is
no greater love than this to lay down your life for somebody you love. The important thing was
to love rather than to be loved. And you should remember: ―Immature love says: I love you
because I need you. Mature love says: I need you because I love you‖

SUGGESTED IDEAS:

Whether you‘re saving for retirement, living on a fixed income, or just looking for new ways to
be smart about how you spend your money, consider the many ways that you can trim your
entertainment budget and actually increase your fun. Here are 10 of the best ideas I‘ve found.
Gallery openings and art walks – Attend art gallery openings, which usually include wine, hors

d‘oeuvres, and a chance to meet the artists and gallery owners. Many communities also host
monthly ―art walks,‖ which allow you to join other art lovers to tour a number of local galleries
on the same evening.
Open mic nights – Check out local coffee houses and pubs that regularly provide an open
microphone and performance venue to amateur and aspiring musicians. It‘s a great way to
support local artists and to hear some of the freshest sounds around—or maybe even sign up
and join in the fun.
Free nights at museums – Many museums offer free admission at least one night each week.
Same art, same exhibits, but no admission fee.
Volunteer to usher – Many professional theater, opera and dance companies use volunteer
ushers to help stretch tight budgets. For passing out programs and helping the paying customers
find their seats, you will receive free admission to the performance, an inside look at what
happens before the curtain goes up, and the opportunity to provide hands-on support to a
dynamic arts organization in your community.
Literary readings – When authors go on tour to promote their books, they may be heading to a
bookstore near you. Check your local newspaper and public library for information about
upcoming readings, where you‘ll have a chance to meet the authors and sample their new work.
Free lectures and community events – Colleges and universities, especially those that receive
public funding, are great community resources that offer a wide range of events and services at
little or no cost. Community and nonprofit organizations also host many free events and
activities. Check libraries, newspaper listings, and neighborhood bulletin boards for schedules.
Free lunchtime concerts – During nice weather, many communities offer free lunchtime
concerts in pleasant locations where there is a high concentration of office workers and a lot of
Page 12 of 65

pedestrian traffic. Pack a picnic or a brown bag lunch, grab a friend, and tap your feet to some
good music while you enjoy the sunshine and the energy of the city.
Join a book club or discussion group – Whether you organize your own with a small group of
friends, discover an established group through your local library or bookstore, or plug into a

national movement like the Socrates cafés (whose members use the Socratic method to discuss
important life issues), book clubs and discussion groups offer a great way to exchange ideas
and gain new insights.
Be a tourist at home – We all establish routines and patterns, get into ruts, and eventually see
only a narrow slice of our own community. Make a conscious effort to step off your usual path,
and take a day to explore a neighborhood or nearby attraction that you have never visited or
haven‘t seen lately.
Go to the library – Still the single greatest resource in almost any community, the public library
offers a rich collection of books and magazines, research and reference materials, and free
Internet access. Whether you just drop in to check out a book you can read on the bus, attend a
public meeting about a critical local issue, or spend a rainy afternoon surfing the Web, your
local library is a great place to find free entertainment.
If you have other good ideas for finding free entertainment, please send them to me at
I‘ll share the best of your ideas in future lists.

b. What is entertainment?
c. Why do people need to entertainment?
d. Why is music the most common types?
e. What has entertainment benefit?
f. Should people abuse in entertainment? Why? Why not?

Conclusion:
In short, we know that everyone need to entertainment. It is important for human life. On
the other hand, entertainment has the negative effect. We should not depend on it so much.
UNIT 5: WORK
WARM UP:
A BROKEN POT

A water bearer in India had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole which he carried
Page 13 of 65

across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, while the other pot was perfect and always
delivered a full portion of water.
At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.
For a full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots full
of water to his house.
Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect for which it was made.
But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it was able
to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do.
After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day
by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you. I have been able to
deliver only half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way
back to your house. Because of my flaws, you have to do a lot of this work, and you don't get
full value from your efforts," the pot said.
The bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of the
path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, and
I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you've
watered them.
For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without
you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house."
Moral:
Each of us has our own unique flaws. We're all cracked pots. But it's the cracks and flaws we
each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding.

NAIL THAT INTERVIEW
By Davide Crisante
Job interviews come in all different forms but one fundamental goal remains the same – you

need to convince an interviewer that you are the one. To do this you need to understand what
the interviewer is looking for and prove that you can deliver. The three things that will help
you secure the job are: preparation, presentation and performance.

Preparation: Research the company
Get as much information about the company, job and industry as you can. Don't just rely on a
Google search or a quick skim of the organisation's website – though this is a good start! To
really impress, look for additional sources of information like business journals and
newspapers. Find out who the company's major clients are, what the company does and the
names of people in key positions like the CEO. Then make sure you mention some of this
information at the interview.
Contact the company and ask about the interview process, and find out who will be
interviewing you. If the organisation is large, you can look for information about this person
online. Knowing something about the person interviewing you can be a massive advantage on
the day.
Preparation: Research yourself
Speak with some old colleagues about your positive and negative traits while at work. What
have you done to build on your strengths and overcome your weaknesses? It's vital to be clear
about what you want, so work out your long-term career goals and how this job fits your plan.
Make sure you know your resume well and be ready to prove your experience by having a few
examples of work achievements up your sleeve.
Preparation: Research the questions
A number of standard questions come up again and again in interviews so it is possible to plan
what you will say if you are asked one of these. For example, it's easy to plan in advance an
answer to 'tell me about a time when you had to deal with a difficult person'.
Practise answering the questions at home. Treat it like a rehearsal and make sure you are
confident to tell your story and to ad lib if something unexpected happens.

Presentation: Clothes
It is better to be overdressed than underdressed and this often means wearing a suit. The easiest
way to find out what is expected of you is to ring the receptionist and ask what the dress code
is. Even if it is casual, you should still dress in smart business clothes. Keep accessories like
jewellery to a minimum, make sure your is hair tidy and your shoes must be clean.
Presentation: Behaviour
It is important to come across as enthusiastic, but let the interviewer set the tone. They might
not shake your hand, but be ready in case they do. React to their mannerisms. If the interviewer
has a soft tone, don't speak loudly back to them. If you tend to move your hands around a lot,
try to keep them closer to your lap. And of course, never forget the golden rule. Turn that
mobile phone off!

Presentation: Develop rapport
An interview is sometimes likened to a date – which is why they can be so intimidating! The
best way to make a good impression is by staying calm and relaxed. Be yourself and try to
enjoy the experience. Eye contact and a smile are essential. Actively listen to everything the
interviewer says and incorporate his or her own words into your answers. Make sure you don't
send off negative signals by crossing your arms or by looking around the room instead of at the
interviewer.
Performance: You're the star
You've prepared, you're confident and you're looking terrific. Now it's showtime! Or rather,
audition time! It's time to sell yourself and convince your interviewer that you are the one and
only. And don't forget to be on time (in fact, make sure you are there a little early).
Stay cool, calm and focused. Deep breathing and relaxation exercises can help relax your
muscles. Stand tall as you walk in and shake hands. Eye contact is good but should not be
continuous -that's unnatural and a little scary!
Performance: Show and tell

Show what you know and what you can do. Listen carefully, and respond. Ask questions of
your own at the end and thank the person for their time with another handshake.
Follow up via email or snail mail to say thank you for the interview and reiterate your interest
in the position. Then cross your fingers and hope for the best.

Unit 6: Money
WARM UP:
PUPPIES FOR SALE

Store owner was tacking a sign above his door that read "Puppies for Sale". Signs
have a way of attracting children, and soon a little boy appeared at the store and
asked, "How much are you gonna sell those puppies for?" The store owner replied,
"Anywhere from $30 to $50." The little boy reached into his pocket and pulled out
some change. "I have $2.37, can I look at them?" The store owner smiled and
whistled. Out of the back of the store came his dog running down the aisle
followed by five little puppies. One puppy was lagging considerably behind.
Immediately the little boy singled out the lagging, limping puppy.
"What's wrong with that little dog?" he asked. The man explained that when the
puppy was born the vet said it had a bad hip socket and would limp for the rest of
its life. The little boy got really excited and said "That's the puppy I want to buy!"
The man replied "No, you don't want to buy that little dog. If you really want him,
I'll give him to you." The little boy got upset. He looked straight into the man's
eyes and said, "I don't want you to give him to me. He is worth every bit as much
as the other dogs and I'll pay the full price. In fact, I will give you $2.37 now and
50 cents every month until I have him paid for."

The man countered, "You really don't want to buy this puppy, son. He's never
going to be able to run, jump and play like other puppies." The little boy reached
down and rolled up his pant leg to reveal a badly twisted, crippled left leg
supported by a big metal brace. He looked up at the man and said, "Well, I don't
run so well myself and the little puppy will need someone who understands." The
man was now biting his bottom lip. Tears welled up in his eyes... He smiled and
said, "Son, I hope and pray that each and every one of these puppies will have an
owner such as you."

THE KING WITH FOUR WIVES
Once upon a time....there was a rich king who had four wives. He loved the fourth

wife the most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her to the finest
delicacies. He gave her nothing but the best. He also loved the third wife very
much and showed her off to neighboring kingdoms. However, he feared that one
day she would leave him for another.
He also loved the second wife. She was his confidante and was always kind,
considerate and patient with him. Whenever the King faced a problem, he could
confide in her to help him get through the difficult times.
The King's first wife was a very loyal partner and had made great contributions in
maintaining his wealth and kingdom. However, he did not love the first wife and
although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her.
One day, the King fell ill and he knew that his time was short.
Thus, he asked the 4th wife, "I have loved you the most, endowed you with the
finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I'm dying, will you
follow me and keep me company?"
"No way!" replied the 4th wife and she walked away without another word. Her
answer cut like a sharp knife right into his heart.
The sad King asked the 3rd wife, "I have loved you all my life. Now that I'm
dying, will you follow me and keep me company?"
"No!" replied the 3rd wife. "Life is too good! When you die, I am going to
remarry!" His heart sank and turned cold.
He then asked the 2nd wife, "I have always turned to you for help and you've
always been there for me. When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?"

"I'm sorry, I can't help you out this time!" replied the 2nd wife. "At the very most,
I can only send you to your grave." Her answer came like a bolt of thunder and the
King was devastated.
Then a voice called out: "I'll leave with you and follow you no matter where you
go."

The King looked up and there was his first wife. She was so skinny, because she
suffered from malnutrition. Greatly grieved, the King said, "I should have taken
better care of you when I had the chance!"
In Truth, we all have four wives in our lives:
Our 4th wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in
making it look great, it'll leave us when we die.
Our 3rd wife is our possessions, status and wealth. When we die it will all go to
others.
Our 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how much they have been there
for us, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave.
Our 1st wife is our Soul, often neglected in pursuit of wealth, power and pleasures
of the ego. However, our Soul is the only thing that will follow us wherever we
go. So cultivate, strengthen and cherish it now! It is your greatest gift to offer the
world.

The Rewards of Saving
When I was about 14, I decided that I would be proactive with money, so I got a
part-time job at a local deli. With my first paycheck, I realized that I would have to
work awfully hard to make very little money. My supervisor had been making just
above minimum wage for 20 years, and I knew I didn't want to spend the rest of
my life working to death. Around the same time, my godparents took me to an
investment workshop. Immediately, my eyes were opened to the power of
compound growth in investing. I knew that this was a way to financial freedom. I
left the workshop determined to make my money work for me instead of just me
working for money.
Honoring what my mother had taught me, to share whatever I had, I donated a
portion of my paychecks to raise money for breast cancer, and saved everything

else to build up a large enough nest egg to open a brokerage account. Too excited
to wait, I began reading everything I could about investing. With most of my life
savings (which wasn't very much money), I invested in DuPont, AT&T,
Caterpillar, and International Paper. The pride in being a shareholder in a
company, along with watching my stocks increase in value, fueled my desire to
learn more. I went to three more investment workshops with my godparents and
browsed books at the library.
I began with $4,000 in my account and have added about $2,000 since then. My
portfolio is now worth roughly $12,000, five years later, having grown about 18%
per year, on average. Some of my favorite holdings are Procter & Gamble and two
biotechnology companies that I know a fair amount about because they're based
near me.
In the years since then, I have experienced many moments of gratitude for
discovering investing so early in my life. I'm in college now, and plan to go onto
medical school and become a family practice physician. And I know that, thanks
to investing, my road will be much easier. Not only have I taken a proactive step
towards improving my long-term financial future, but I am confident that I will
also be able to generously support the causes I believe in with more ease than I
otherwise would have imagined. -- Tacy Holliday, 19

A Jumpstart on the Future
From the very start, my parents encouraged me to save half of my earnings. It first
felt like a chore to "give" my money to the bank, but I eventually realized that I
was actually paying myself. When I was about 12, my parents urged me to start
investing small amounts, such as $150 to $200, in the stocks of my choice. My
eyes were wide with the prospect of riches, but I didn't really know how to go
about finding promising companies and researching them.

In the summer of 1998, I attended CompuFest, an annual conference held by the
National Association of Investors Corporation. In their youth program, I learned
how to research a company, to evaluate the criteria that make a good investment,
such as good management, a relatively low P/E ratio, good growth rate and solid
prospects for future growth. I bought my first stock, in the Applebee's restaurant
chain, when I was about 13. My approach to finding stocks has changed over the
years.
These days I often visit investing websites to get ideas -- but I never buy a stock
without first researching its history and management thoroughly. I expect to make
money in the stock market if I invest for the long term. I'm currently saving for
college -- and eventually a house, once I'm out of college. I think it's essential to
learn how to invest at a young age, to have a jumpstart on the future. -- Tina

A Dripping Teen
I became interested in investing when I got my first job as a waiter. I had money
that I'd saved and wanted to buy stocks like my parents. When I turned 16, I
opened an account with my mom at a local brokerage. I then bought my first two
stocks: $200 worth of General Electric and $200 worth of Abbott Labs, a
pharmaceutical company. I picked these companies using information I gathered
from books and online discussion boards.
After buying my first stocks, I gained confidence and wanted to keep investing. It
was if I had been on a swaying bridge and had finally set foot on solid ground. I
continued to learn more and kept putting money in my brokerage account. I then
bought stock in several other well-known companies, including AT&T, Cisco
Systems, Intel, Pfizer, and WorldCom. As I learned more, I sold my first shares of
GE and Abbott Labs, reinvesting the money in a "Drip" (dividend reinvestment
plan) with Pfizer. Dripping is my favorite way to invest, because it's so
inexpensive. I currently Drip both Pfizer and Duke Energy.

I pick my stocks using the principles of Warren Buffett and Peter Lynch. I like
companies that steadily increase earnings and have high profit margins, with room
to grow. I also like to see little or no debt. I prefer companies whose products are
used by everyone, products without which the world would be different. Can you
imagine the world without medicine and computers?
I've had many good stock picks and a few bad ones. My best has been my Pfizer
Drip, which has grown steadily. Another good one has been AT&T. I invested
$380 into AT&T, and it is now worth $510. My worst pick has been Cisco
Systems, which I bought at $50 per share and watched go all the way down to $15.
You have to take the bad with the good, and I am not worried. After all -- I'm only
