Group and team.
2 or more people get together… with
common interests
Group may have common objectives, but
not …. roles
e.g. A tour group, a study group…
Team is a subset of group
Group
Team
Informal group
Human are social animals. We like to get
together and form social group.
Sociemetry
The study of who likes who, and who
dislikes who…
and with whom people in an organization
would or wouldn’t wish to work.
Social Capital
People with strong informal network tend
to have more power and influence as they
receive better information, preferential
treatment, and more visible.
Therefore, informal group increases a
Person social capital.
Group Decision Making
This is the most important issue we study
for group.
We make different decision when we are
alone and we are in a group.
This is sometimes called group dynamics
How do we make good decision in group
Group Decision Making
1.
Group make better decisions
-> more complete information and knowledge
2.
But group decision making is
a. Time consuming
b. and can be riskier….
Aggressive
Assertive - MPD
Passive
Can it be possible ?
The terrible trial
Why Riskier
•
Pressure to conform
•
Ambiguous responsibilities
•
Dominated by few
•
Evaluation Apprehension
.
Evaluation Apprehension
Individuals are reluctant to mention ideas
That seem silly because they believe (often
correct) that other are silently evaluating
Them.
It is based on the individual’s desire to
create a favourable self-image, and need to
Protect self-esteem.
GroupThink
Tendency of highly cohesive group to value
consensus at the price of decision quality.
- Apply pressure on those express doubt
- Members who have doubt keep silent
- Illusion of unanimity - if someone doesn’t speak, it is
assumed that they are in accord.
Groupshift
Conservative become more cautious
More aggressive types become takes on
more risks.
But usually towards more risk..
1. When members are more familiar, they also become more
bold and daring
2. Our society values risks
3. Group decision free any single members from accountability
Group Decision Making
Techniques
•
Interacting group
•
Brain Storming
No criticism is allowed
•
•
Nominal Group Method
Delphi Method
Nominal Group Method
Why ‘Nominal’ - restrict interpersonal
Communication and discussion
Nominal Group Method
• Members meet. Before discussion
members write down their ideas independently
• Member take turn and present one idea to the group
until all ideas have been presented
• Members discuss ideas for clarity and evaluate them
Some ideas may be combined at this stage
• Each member silently and independently ranks each
idea. The idea with the highest aggregate is selected
Delphi Method
No physical presence
•
Problem is identified. Members are asked to provide
solution through questionnaires.
•
Result of questionnaire is compiled, transcribed and
reproduced.
•
Members receive results and ask again for
for their solution.
Delphi Method
•
Extremely time consuming…
•
No rich array of alternatives
Case Study
People Developer University conducts BND courses in Vietnam
.Evidence of learning outcomes is sometime achieved by group
assignment. Group assignment has the advantage simulates the
environment in which learners will face in the actual work place.
However, one of the shortcoming of group assignment is social
loafing
within groups. Lecturers at People Developer, Victor, Jude, Diana,
and
Peter would like to propose a better arrangement for group
assignment.
Working individual or in group, propose the solution for better
decision
Making.
