Nowadays,-ruyi Ruth, people only sing together in churches and football grounds, although it could

more than anything, it brings people together'
When Ruth first started singing, there was little opportunity to sing with others. Then,

Dream Job
Since 1969, Mark Haris has worked for a well-known toy manufacturer designing cars. When
he started, he was the only man in the department, but now he is in charge of a team of'35 designers.
Mark frrst got interested in cars during his teens. His dad was a football coach and one day he
took a car magazine away from one of his players during a practice session. He brought it horne and
gave it to Mark. From that moment on, cars became the love of Mark's life.
He went on to study car design at university and then worked for a car company designing actual
cars, before beingpersuadedby a friend to join the toy company and set up their design depar-tment.
Of allthe cars llelaljlg$gngd, his favourite is the Silver Sunrise- It may not have achieved such
high sales as some other cai's and it is not his first toy car, but it is important to Mark because it was the
first time he rvas allowed to make a model that'looked like a real car. "Before that, the wheels on all the
cars stuck out so they would go straight." explained Mark. "The Silver Sunrise rvas the first one where
the wheels were under the body. It meant it didn't work so well on a race track but it looked amazing."
Now in his 60s, Mark is approaching retirement. He finds it hard to imagine r,vhat that will be
like. "l have expensive hobbies, so it might be difficult to continue with them when I am no longer
eaming! Plus, I like corning in to work. Ideally, I'd like to retire part time and work part time."

Rock and roll came from jazz, and blues during the 1950s. One of the first rock and roll songs was Bi[E
Haley's "Rock Around the Clock". One of the first very famous rock and roll singers was Elvis Presley. Others
were Buddy Holly and Chuck B"rry. Now, almost every country has many rock and roll badds and singers
Sometimes performers call their music by different names, like "rap" or "punk". They sing and play mixfures of
rcjck and roll and talking or other sounds. "Rap" and "punk" both came from rock and roll, or "rock music".
Some fans who like rock music think classical music is boring, Many fans play rock music very loudlyThey forget about the people who enjoy soft music. Many fans also like to dance to rock and roll.
When rock and roll was new, people had only records to play the music at home. After that, we used
io music on compact discs. Most modern bands and singers have the
videos of their songs made by eompanies. With videos, fans can see the performers at the same time they listere
