Materials and

Manufacture

The steel for bolts, nuts and washers is made by the open-hearth, basic-oxygen, or electric
furnace process.
Bolts, nuts and washers are heat treated under uniform conditions
They are quenched in oil or in a suitable liquid and then tempered.
Threads of all bolts are rolled.

described in Table

1.

When the galvanized bolts are specified, the bolts are hot dip zinc coated in accordance with
the requirements for Class C of ASTM A153.
The suitable grades and surface finishes of nut and wahser for each type of bolt are as

3. Material
The material for bolts, Nuts

and Washers shall be such that the products

comply with the mechanical requirements of 4.
Mitsuboshi Industries, Ltd. uses several kinds of steel described in’
Table 2, which were specially produced by the high level controlled
furnace of Nippon Kokan K.K. and Nakayama Steel Works, Ltd. for
high strength bolts, nuts and washers.
These steels have a best heat-treatability and a good durability against
.
delayed fracture of the bolts.
