AGREEMENT BETWEEN VERB AND SUBJECT
I. General rules:
- Singular S + Singular V
Ex: Mary gets up early.
- Plural S + Plural V
Ex: Mary and Daisy always get up early
II.
Some cases of subject:
1. N1 + and + N2 + Plural V (N1 và N2 là 2 người hay 2 vật khác nhau)
Ex: The secretary and the treasurer were present.
Oil and water do not mix.
2. N1 + and + N2 + Singular V (N1 và N2 là cùng 1 người hay 1 vật)
Ex: The singer and doctor is coming (Người ca sĩ kiêm bác sĩ đang đến)
Bacon and egg is my favorite dish.
3. Many a/ Every/ Each + Singular N + and + many a/ every/ each + Singular N +
Singular V
Ex: Many a teacher and many a student has attended the lecture.
4. Nobody/ Somebody/ Everybody/ Everything/ … + Singular V
Ex: Nobody came the party.
Everything is ready.
5. N1 + like/ with/ along with/ together with/ in addition to/ as well as/ besides/ no
less than/ accompanied by + N2 + V (theo N1)
Ex: The study of languages requires time.
The president, together with his advisors, is coming.
They, no less than Tom, were eager to start.
The manager, as well as his assistant, has arrived.
6. (Either +) N1 + or + N2

Ex: Either you or I am wrong.

7. Each/ Every/ One

8. Time (thời gian), Measure (đo lường), Money (Tiền bạc), Distance (khoảng cách)
Singular V
Ex: Twenty dollars is too much to pay for this book.
9. All --- referring to things Singular V
All --- referring to people Plural V
Ex: All is calm. (Tất cả mọi vật đều im lặng)
All are Vietnamese. (Tất cả mọi người đều là người Việt Nam)
10. None / The majority / All/ Some/ Plenty/ Percentage/ … + of + N + V (theo N)
Ex: Half of the money is stolen.
Half of the students are English.
None of the money is mine.
The majority of students speak English.
11. The number of + Plural N + Singular V
A number of + Plural N + Plural V
Ex: The number of students is 40. (Số lượng học sinh là 40)
A number of students are over 40 years old. (Một số học sinh trên 40 tuổi)
12. Nouns plural in form (có 's') but singular in meaning Singular V
Nouns: news, mumps, sickens, measles, mathematics, physics, phonetics, linguistics,
politics, athletics...
Ex: The news is goods.
Mathematics is an important S.
13. Uncountable N Singular V
Some uncountable Ns: furniture, equipment, machinery, traffic, information, knowledge,
money, advice, progress, luggage, homework, housework, merchandise...
Ex: There is much traffic during rush hours.
14. A title of a book, story Singular V
The name of a country, town, place Singular V
Ex: "Gulliver's Travels" is an amusing book.
15. Nouns always in plural Plural V
Some Nouns always in plural: cattle, people, police, scissors, pliers, tongs, trousers,
pants, shorts, jeans, glasses, goods, compasses...
Ex: Cattle are grazing.
16. The + Adj Plural V
The blind (người mù), the rich (người giàu) ....
Ex: The English are used to driving on the left. (Người Anh quen lái xe bên trái)
17. Collective Noun Singular V nếu chỉ 1 đơn vị
Collective Noun Plural V nếu chỉ từng cá nhân.
Collective nouns: family, committee, team, crowd, public, congress, parliament, class,
army.
Ex: His family is rich. (chỉ 1 đơn vị)
His family are having dinner. (chỉ từng cá nhân)
