Lab B: Creating Referrals and
Replication Agreements
Objectives
After completing this lab, you will be able to:
!
Set up a referral to another MMS Server.
!
Configure MMS Compass to properly follow these referrals.
!
Create a Replication Agreement to replicate information from another MMS
Server.
Lab Setup
To complete this lab, you need the following:
!
MMS Server installed and running.
!
MMS Compass installed and configured to connect to your MMS Server.
!
An instance of the Tutorial HR (LDIF) Management Agent created and
operated.
!
A partner computer with a similar MMS Server configuration.

Estimated time to complete this lab: 60 minutes

Exercise 1
Creating Referrals
In this exercise, you will set up a referral so you can search for entries in your lab partner’s
directory.
Scenario
Humongous Insurance and Juggernaut Insurance have decided to share directory information.
Directory administrators from each organization have agreed to set up referrals in their directories
so that their users can search the directories of both organizations transparently.

Tasks Detailed Steps
1.
Log on to Windows 2000.
a.
Log on to Windows 2000 as Administrator with a password of
password.
2.
Ensure that the MMS Server
icon is present in the system
tray.
b.
If the MMS Server icon is not present in the system tray, then perform
steps b, c and d.
c.
At a command prompt, type net stop "MMS Server" and then press
ENTER.
d.
At a command prompt, type net start "MMS Server" and then press
ENTER.
e.
Close the command prompt window.

3.
Start MMS Compass, and
then log on to your MMS
server.
a.
Start MMS Compass, and then log on to your MMS server as
(where server is your
computer name and domain is your domain name) with a password of
server.
4.
Create an entry in your
directory that will point to
your lab partner’s directory
information.
a.
In the directory pane of MMS Compass, navigate to nwtraders.
b.
Right-click nwtraders and then click Insert.
c.
In the Insert Object Under dialog box, in the Relative Name box,
type partner_dom (where partner_dom is your partner's domain name).
d.
Under Type of Object To Create, click the Domain component icon,
and then click Insert to create the referral node.
The properties sheet for your newly created domain component will
be displayed.
e.
Click OK to close the properties sheet.
f.
Click Cancel to close the Insert Object Under dialog box.

5.
Identify the new entry as a
referral node and set up
MMS Compass to always
chase referrals.
a.
In the directory pane, expand nwtraders, and then click partner_dom.
b.
In the control pane, click Administration.
c.
In the Entry Administration dialog box, on the References tab, in the
Referral LDAP and HTTP Server URLs box, type
ldap://partner_server.partner_dom.nwtraders.msft:390 (where
partner_server is the name of your partner's server and partner_dom is
the name of your partner's domain). Reference the Home Server
LDAP URL text box as an example.
d.
Under Chasing Referrals, click Always chase, and then click OK.

Verify that the entries from
your partner's MMS Server
were referred to your server.
e.
In the directory pane, expand partner_dom, expand metaverse, and

then expand MoneyDept.
f.
Right-click Aarika Quek, point to View, and then click Referrals.
Which server will perform the following operations on this entry: Full Search? Read? Modification?

Full Search: Referrals will be dispatched to your partner's server. Read: Referrals will be dispatched
to your partner's server. Modification: Changes will be made on your partner's server.

Close Microsoft Internet Explorer.
7.
Set up MMS Compass to
search for an entry on your
lab partner’s server.
a.
In the directory pane, right-click nwtraders, point to Configure, and
then click Set Search Base.
b.
In the control pane, right-click Search, then click Search.
The Search dialog box is displayed with the distinguished name of
nwtraders set for the search base.
c.
In the Search dialog box, in the Search What box, type Aarika Quek
and then click Find.
d.
In the control pane, click each entry to display its location in The
Known Universe.
How many Aarika Quek entries were returned by the search? Where in The Known Universe is each entry

located and on which MMS Server.

The search returned three Aarika Quek entries. One entry is the connector namespace entry on your
MMS Server. A second entry is the metaverse namespace entry on your server. A third entry is a
metaverse namespace entry on your partner's server.


8.
Verify the rights that your
partner has on your MMS
Server.
a.
In the system tray, right-click the MMS Server icon, and then click
Restore MMS Server.
b.
In the MMS Server window, in the Connected LDAP clients box,
view the connections to your MMS Server.
c.
Locate your MMS Compass connection from the list of connected
clients by using your Internet Protocol (IP) address.

Tasks Detailed Steps
What is the name and authentication type for your MMS Compass connection to your MMS Server? What is
the name and authentication type for your partner's referral connection to your MMS Server?

The name and authentication type for your MMS Compass connection to your MMS Server is

Administrator and Protected. The name and authentication type for your partner's referral connection
to your MMS Server is anonymous LDAP and Anonymous.

Minimize the MMS Server window.
9.
Set up MMS Compass to
look at local entries only.
a.
In the directory pane of MMS Compass, right-click partner_dom, point
to Configure, point to Refer To, and then click Local Server.
b.
Double-click partner_dom.
What information is displayed? Can you view your partner's MMS Server information?

The Properties page of your local domain component entry is displayed. Your partner's MMS Server
information is not available.

Click Cancel to close the partner_dom dialog box.
d.
Right-click partner_dom, point to Configure, point to Refer To, and
then click The known Universe.

Exercise 2
Replicating Information from Another Server
In this exercise, you will create a replication agreement to make a shadow copy of your lab
partner’s directory information.
Scenario
After trying referrals, the directory administrators at Northwind Traders discover that there is a
large amount of inter-organizational directory lookups being performed. The directory
administrators have decided to make local “shadow” copies of directory information to reduce
network traffic.

Tasks Detailed Steps
Wait until your partner has completed Exercise 1 before proceeding.

1.
Delete the referral entry to
your partner's MMS Server.
a.
In the directory pane of MMS Compass, right-click partner_dom, point
to Delete, and then click Delete selected entries.

b.
Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
2.
Re-insert the domain
component to represent your
partner’s MMS Server data.
a.

Right-click nwtraders, and then click Insert.
b.
In the Insert Object Under dialog box, in the Relative Name box,
type partner_dom
c.
Under Type of Object To Create, click the Domain component icon,
and then click Insert to create the junction node.
d.
Click OK to close the properties sheet.
e.
Click Cancel to close the Insert Object Under dialog box.
3.
Create a Replication
agreement.
a.
In the directory pane, click partner_dom.
b.
In the control pane, click Actions, and then click New Replication
Agreement.
c.
In the Create Replication Agreement dialog box, in the Type of
Agreement box, click Replicate a zone from another LDAP server,
then click OK.
4.
Configure the Replication
agreement.
a.
In the Consumer Replication Agreement dialog box, on the Configure
tab, under Connection Information, in the URL of server hosting
master copy box, type

ldap://partner_server.partner_dom.nwtraders.msft:390
5.
Run the Replication
agreement.
a.
In the Consumer Replication Agreement dialog box, display the
Operate tab.
b.
Click Start Replication.
The Operator's log displays the replication progress.

c.
Click OK to close the Consumer Replication Agreement dialog box.
