1. Why do you learn English? (You learning English/ How do you learn
English?) (Tại sao phải học tiếng anh?)
Nowadays English is the most popular international language in the world.
Approximately, ¾ World population now can speak English and it is the language
in many countries. If one can speak English well, he can use it anywhere he goes.
Apart from being used everyday life, English has been used widely in many areas:
it is language of commerce, air industry, banking, sports, arts, music … Millions of
people are learning English now. There are many ways to learn English. Some go
to classes with a teacher’s help, some take teaching at home, others study through
books, magazines, radios or T.V. The mater is one should choose the best suitable
way for them. I started studying English after graduating from university. I took an
evening class, 3 times a week. During class time, we learnt new words, grammar,
wrote compositions, listened to the cassette or ratio or spoke English with my
classmates or the teacher. My teacher was very attentive and humorous. Sometimes
she told us funny stories which made us laugh much. It was a very good way to
learn new words. She war ready to help me whenever I don’t know something. She
encouraged me a lot. Now I still studying more because I’m not pleased with my
English. Among the four skills listening and speaking are the most difficult. So at
home I often read more English books to widen my vocabulary and listen to
English radio program such as BBC, VOA … to improve my listening. The more I
2
learn English the more difficult it becomes but I like learning English as it is very
useful for me in life and in my job.
2. City life (Cuộc sống ở đô thị lớn)
Life everywhere, whether in city or in country has advantages and disadvantages.
However, many people prefer to live in the city than in the country as they can
have better living conditions. There are modern houses and apartments with good
furniture . Travelling is much more convenient by both private or and public means
of transport. Then people can get good services in modern hospital, good school
and university with water and electric, communication systems. There are also
large shopping centers and markets with a wide range of commodities. For spiritual
life, there are many kinds of entertainment to them choose: theaters, cinemas,
circuses, parks, museums, exhibition centers or famous places of interest… Urban
dwellers have much more opportunities to study and get a good job as well as
going abroad. However, there are disadvantages in city life. People suffer from a
lot stress because of pressures of taking efforts to study more and more, trying to
get good job, looking for a chance of getting promoted or how to buy a modern car,
a more expensive house to go up to high class. They have to be thrifty as living
cost is higher and higher. Also there is an increase in the number of crimes:
everyday robberies, thefts, murders … happen. Then the addition of drugs and
other social evils. Life in city is becoming more and more dangerous. Nevertheless
people still like it because of its attraction. Every year millions of country men go
to the city to seek jobs in the hope of having a better life. Along with them there
have been problem of shortage of houses and crimes. This caused a big problem to
big cities and make life worse. It is the fact in not only one country but also many
countries in the world. The matter how to solve this problem is still a big open
question.
3. My holiday (Kỳ nghỉ của tôi)
All members in my family like travelling very much. Last week we decided to go
to Ha Long Bay , one of the famous views in Viet Nam. We got ups very early, at 5
o’clock. We left Hanoi at 7.00 A.M, arrive in Ha Long city at 12.30 ( it’s about 170
km far from Hanoi). Ha long is one of the famous views in Vietnam, a unique site
3
where some 1950 islands from the waters of the Gulf of Tonkin. After lunch, the
bus took us to the harbor to do boat trip on the Bay. We have dinner at local
restaurant, enjoyed fresh seafood. Then we had free time to visit Royal Park and
Ha long city by night.
The next day after breakfast we discovered Sung sot cave (the Amazing cave),
Bonau Cave … and a panoramic view. We relaxed at Catco I and Catco II beach.
Then the bus took us to the National park, where we did trekking for 3 hours, went
down the valley and along the Amin path to Trungtrang cave. In the afternoon we
visited the fishing village by bamboo boat and to the boat and to the beach for
swimming and waiting for romantic sunset moment on the island. On the way back
to Hanoi we visited Tuanchau island, enjoyed the performance of sea animal such
as Dolphin, sea-dog.
4. Weather in Viet Nam (thời tiết ở VN)
Viet Nam is located in the center of Southeast Asia and it is an important bridge
linking Southeast Asia’s mainland together. We have continental climate, hot,
humid and rainy. There are four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, winter. Spring is
breeding season. It is warm, drizzly with high moisture. The temperature is about
18-25 degrees Centigrade. Flowers are everywhere. It is the best time to grow
trees. We always organize Growing Festival after New year Holiday. Everybody
from old people to young take part in this work. We want our atmosphere to be
more fresher. Summer is very hot, the highest temperature maybe 39 degree
centigrade. It rain everyday, especially in the South. It is tourist season. Visitors
from every where in the world come here because Viet Nam is one of the safest
destination with famous beautiful views such as Ha long Bay, Huong Pagoda, Cat
Ba Island, Phu Quoc island… because of this climate, our country becomes one of
the biggest exports partners. Our agricultural products is very various: Tropical
fruit, rice, tea, coffee, rubber…
Autumn is the best season with falling yellow leaves and light wind. You can
always be in fresh air because trees are everywhere … It is good time to go to night
market to buy goods, have traditional foods or wander about the streets. Winter is
the worst season. It is very cold. Sky is grey. People feel sad and lonely in this time
and always expect spring coming

5. Importance of foreign languages (tầm quan trọng của ngoại ngữ)
In modern life every body except mother languages knows some foreign
languages. It is very important, without them we can not live and work in
developing society, changing day after day.
Now our government is carrying out the open door policy. We have much wider
and better relations with other countries. Our country not only exports many
products out, but also imports many things back. Foreign languages are helping us
a lot. Everyday we have to work with people from different countries directly or
through internet, telephone …. It is very convenient for us to talk with them in
foreign languages. Then we can understand each other much better. We can learn a
lot from them about polities, culture, economic, scientific achievement …
If we know foreign languages well, you can listen to radio broadcasts from abroad
in native languages. So we can get quicker and better information about things, and
go to everywhere in the world.
There are a lot of books and newspapers published in foreign languages in our
country now. We can read them well and get many things from other countries. We
have chances to improve our knowledge about their custom and traditions. Music
and songs from countries are being played everywhere, foreign languages help us
to enjoy them and our cultural life will be richer. In short, foreign languages make
people be in one family.
6. New year’s evening ( Đêm giao thừa)
One of the most memorable festival in Viet Nam is new year’s evening. It is the
time when the old year is going out. There are its last few hours and very soon we
will be seeing it out.
The streets are full of people. The shops are attracting them like magnets. If
looking at the lighted windows we will see brilliantly decorated trees without
which you can’t imagine the New year celebration. Many families prefer to see
New Year in at home with their friends and relatives. Houses are cleaned and put in
order. Cake, wine, fruit and all kind of choice holiday foods and prepared for
family reunions in every home. But many young people are against celebrating the
5
New year indoors. They like to see the New year in somewhere out in the open air
such as streets, parks, squares…. The clock hands are creeping nearer and nearer
towards midnight. Soon crowded buses and taxis will be rushing from one end of
the city the other carrying people sitting one another. By this time the men and
children in the family will have laid the festival tables. Soon the best part of the
waiting will begin. Radios and television will be switched on in all the houses. The
whole city standing round tables, holding ups glasses of champagne, every one will
be waiting for the moment of New year coming. A happy new year to one and all.
7. New year’s Day (Ngày mùng 1 tết)
The first of January is regarded as Vietnamese great national holiday. Directly after
midnight, people often begin calling and wishing one another: Happy new Year.
According to old folk custom, the first person putting foot across the doorsill on
New year’s Day is called a “first-foot” and is thought to bring good or bad luck for
the coming year.
They are usually good man or woman, they have a happy family to make the good,
the “first-food” always brings a gift or wine, fruit or some small gift. New year’s
Day is spent in visiting family and friends, exchanging greetings and good wishes.
Many families prefer to see New Year in at home with their friends and relatives.
In the morning people often take children come back to their home villages, where
grandparents and relatives are waiting for them. Houses are cleaned and put in
order. Cake, wine, fruit and all kind of choice holiday foods are cleaned and put in
order Cake, wine, fruit and all kind of choice holiday foods are prepared for family
reunions in every home. The children receive presents or money.
But many young people are against celebrating the New Year indoors. They like to
see the New Year in somewhere out in the open air such as streets, parks, squares
… At this time you will see crows of merry, laughing people.
8. My house (nhà tôi)
6
My name is Toan. I’m 51 years old. I’m an official in the office of education and
training. I’ve been married for 22 years. My family is living in Ninh Binh city now.
We have small but nice house in Dong Thanh street. It has 3 floor, each floor has 2
rooms and a toilet. The living room is on the ground floor, where the whole family
often gathers in the evening to have dinner, watch T.V or talk about work, my son’s
study and other interesting stories. There are a market, a swimming pool, a park, 2
car parks and many high apartment blocks here. They are all new and modern.
There are also a supermarket, filling station and a hospital nearby. My house is
near a small river. It looks out on a big department store. It is very convenient here
for our living as it takes only a few minutes walk to go the market, bus station or
the supermarket. Here we can enjoy the beauty of a green lake with green trees on
around. Although we live in the city, it is very quiet. In the evening, after dinner we
can take a walk on the sidewalks or sit under the trees enjoying the fresh air or do
some jogging. In rainy days we can sit on the top floor to see the city life while we
drink tea. Form here we can get an interesting view of the whole city under bright
lights at night. Living here has both exciting atmosphere of a big city and a
tranquility of a small village. I like my house very much.
9. My hobby (Sở thích của tôi)
My name is Toan. I’m 51 years old. I’m an official in the office of education and
training. I’m married for 22 years. One of my hobbies is music. I like both classical
and pop music. Sometimes I listen to soft music. I can play some musical
instrument of which I can play the guitar the best. I started studying music when I
was young. I didn’t go to school to study music just took some at home. My
teacher was my uncle. He was very strict but was a very good teacher. Sometimes
he scolded me but I was not angry with him. Thanks to him I could play the guitar
well. I couldn’t become a musician as my uncle whished but studying music is
very useful for me. In my free time I often play the guitar. It makes my mind fresh.
As you know sometimes due to boring work we feel so tired that we don’t want to
do anything. Then we should listen to the music. You can get off your chest all the
stress and it can liven up you and bring you more power to go back to work.
Sometimes my friends wondered why I liked playing the guitar the best. The
answer is it is the musical instrument that requires people to make effort to play
and it seems difficult but when you can play you will see that it is not difficult at
7
all. Listening to the rhythm of the melodies or folk country brings you much joy
and pleasure. Music makes my life better.
10. Environment (Môi trường)
The environment plays a very important role in people’s life. What is the
environment? It is all the things surrounding us: nature, air, water, sea, lakes,
forest…. Why is it so very important to us? Because it can make our life good or
bad. Its influence on us is so big that we all have to take care of it. Recently there
are very so many warnings from scientists that the environment is being more and
more destroyed. People are contaminating the environment in many ways: throw
rubbish and dangerous chemicals into rivers, lakes and sea discharge carbonic
dioxide in to the air, cut off forests…. There has been a big hole reported in the
atmosphere which is considered as the shield to protect the Earth from violet rays
or meteorites cashing into. That is the reason why the percentage of people getting
cancer and other fatal diseases is rising. Then the temperature of the Earth is going
up that makes the ice in the two Earth’s pole to melt. If all the ice melts it is likely
that people will suffer from a great flood that maybe no one can survive. So what
should we do now to protect the Environment? Just from now we all must be aware
of the gangers what are threatening the environment. We should educate our
children that at school. Instead of cutting of the forests we have to grow more.
Keep the environment clean by stop them. Then less use cars, machinery and home
devices that use dangerous chemicals ….We have to start protecting the
environment right now before to late not only for ourselves but for our next
generations.
11.Traffic in Viet Nam (Giao thông ở Việt Nam)
No one can deny that recently Viet Nam has been developing much with so many
good achievements. It is one of the Asian countries that the growth rate is over 7%
together with China, Malaysia, and Thailand…. However, Viet Nam is now having
some big problems of which one is bad traffic. The situation now is warning.
Indeed, traffic is one of biggest troubles to people everyday. There are many
complaints from foreigners who are living or working here about frequently getting
in traffic jams, getting involved in or fears of witnessing accidents. Everyday on
average 35 people die and 50 people injured and many vehicles damaged in road
8
accidents all over the country. The loss is uncountable. It affects badly people’s life
and endangers the economy. What is the reason? There are many. It is also the
subject articles on newspapers and magazines or of many seminar on traffic. What
should be done to stop the rising number of road accidents? Firstly, people must be
fully aware of the danger accidents causing to individuals, families and the society.
Education on this must be put on top. Individuals must more careful while using
the roads. Secondly, try to use public means of transport frequently instead of
private ones. Study carefully the regulations. And for the government together with
upgrading and widening up the road system it is essential to put the issuing of
driving licenses under strict control. And only by doing that there is a hope of
making traffic in Viet Nam better if we want to develop the economy more.

Sport plays a very important role in man’s life. Form very early times people stated
playing sports. Thanks to ancient Greeks we now have Olympic Games, the
greatest sport event in the World held every 4 years with top purpose is
strengthening friendship. Peace and mutual understanding between countries.
Playing sports brings people many benefits. It makes them healthy both physically

all the body’s organs have good chances to practice and become tougher. Sports are
good for all from the aged to the young. Many people take it as a bobby. After hard
working days playing sports brings them joy and relax. With time there are more
and more kinds of sports. From easy and popular ones such as soccer, volley ball,
tennis to dangerous ones such as parachuting, motor racing…. Or odd and funny
ones such as standing in a rucksack and skip… There are many sports associations
in the World. Sport now is not only leisure. It has become a commerce that people
can gain huge benefit. Many famous athletes have become millionaires and even

they want to have sponsorship. This is the thing that makes sports now different
from 100 years ago. A new trend has been made. However, no one can deny the
great benefit sports bring to people in life. I myself like sports very much
especially football. I often watch football matches on T.V in my free time.
15. Ao Dai (Viet Nam’s Traditional long dress) (Áo dài Việt Nam)
The charm of Viet Nam’s tradition dress, the Aodai lies in its simplicity. Consisting
of a long flowing tunic over loose trousers, Ao Dai is translated as “Long dress”.
Unlike Japanese kimono, the Ao Dai allows for freedom of movement and a
grateful gait. By the end of the 1950s,the Ao Dai was the daily wear of most girls
and women in Viet Nam. Nowadays, due to changes in ways of transport it is worn
only at schools or formal occasions and by many hotels receptionists, bank staffs,
flight attendants and students. Many women wear Ao Dai on special occasions like
weddings, New Year and Women’s day. First designed in the 1930s, the Ao dai has
changed over time. The height of the collar and the length of the tunic have
changed accordingl6y the fashion, yet the overall design is the same. Materials too
have been changed much from silk, velvet to polyester patterned. After tailoring,
some designers add eye-catching painting or embroider. The image of graceful Viet
Nam women in Ao Dai leaves a lasting impression on many foreigners who came
to be attracted by its great lure.
16. My free time (Thời gian rảnh rỗi của tôi)
My name is Toan. I’m 51 years old. I’m an official in education office. I’m

time. I often read newspapers and magazines, watch TV, listen to music at home.
Sometimes I go to the concert of opera house with my friends and colleagues or
playing the guitar or violin. I often go somewhere on holiday with my family. We
11
want to go far to escape from the noise, dust and stress of urban life. We like going
to the sea or the mountains. There we can enjoy the beauty of the nature and the
fresh air. It makes our mind fresh. Let’s imagine how wonderful it is to see the sun
light through green leaves of high trees, listen to bird’s singing or the murmuring
of the streams. Then climbing up the hills or the mountains to the peak and have a
great view of green large fields and tiny houses beneath. Standing here brings us a
strange feeling, just so strong and powerful like a hero at victory and also the
feeling of weakness in front of great nature. When we get tired after a long walk
we put up a tent on the slope of the hill and enjoy a pack lunch brought from home.
As we all are hungry we see that the food so tasty ! Another time we can go to the
seaside, sea sand beach. And spending a night at sea enjoying special seafood and
breathing breeze blown from the sea. We also can feel the taste of salt. It is special.
After one or two days on holiday we really feel strong and powerful enough to go
back to work. Life is so wonderful if you know how to enjoy it !
17.An important inventions of the 20 th Century (Những phát minh quan
trọng của thế kỷ 20)
One of the most important inventions of the 20th century is telephone. No one can
deny that. Before that time how did our great grand parents contact each other? It
was troublesome as it took them much time to go far to meet other people and
exchange news. In urgent cases they had no choice but to ride horses or even run
several days to give important news to others. Sometimes it was too late especially
in the wars. But how are the things going on now ? Telephone appeared and
brought a great change to people’s life. Since then it has been very convenient for
people to communicate. They don’t have to leave home or the office. Just hang up
the phone, dial the number they want and want for some seconds. Then they can
hear the voice of their partners, relatives or dear friends that stays far away. For
businessmen it is very important as they can keep themselves up date with latest
news not only in their own countries but oversea market. News can come in several
minutes. No need to go anywhere by car or train. It save them much time and
money. Then in urgent cases people can call the ambulance, police, fire brigade…
easily. Moreover, as time goes by telephone services are getting better and better.
Now you can not only hear people’s voice but also see the pictures of people
having a talk with you. It is interesting if you want to see the people you are
12
longing to meet. Then so many other convenient things are ready for you. You can
get useful knowledge when using services like 1080, 116, 19001221…. It is
difficult to say how much important the telephone is because of its great use in
everyday life. The benefit it brings people is uncountable. Hope that in the future
people can invent more things to make life more and more convenient and joyful.
18.My family (Gia đình tôi)
My name is Toan. I’m 51 years old. I’m an official in office of education and
training. I’ve been married for 22 years. My family is now living in Ninh Binh city.
We have small but nice house in Dong Thanh streets, new urban living area. There
are 4 people in my family: me, my wife and 2 my sons. My wife is a teacher. She is

evening I and my wife clean the house, cook together and have dinner at around 7
p.m. Then I watch T.V news and drink tea. After dinner my wife takes a walk about
45 minutes. Sometimes I also walk with her. Then we watch some interesting films

we can go somewhere on holiday, often to the mountain or the sea. We all enjoy
the beauty of nature very much. Or we go to my home town to visit my parents by
car or by train. We occasionally visit our friends or go shopping in the center.
Sometimes we go to the concert or opera house. We both like music. Although we
are very busy we still try to find time to be together. I’m happy with my family.
19. My job (Công việc của tôi, nghề nghiệp của tôi)
My name is Toan. I’m 51 years old. I’m an official in education office. I’ve been
working here for 15 years. Before I was a teacher. Now I’m working in the student
and pupil management department. Everyday I go to work at 7 a.m. After having
some coffee, I start work. I have to manage all the work of the universities,
colleges, high school in Ninh Binh city. Everyday I have prepared documents, get
and check them. Then I have to present them to my bosses to sign. After finishing
all I have to send them to the involving agencies. My work involves in doing
computer work very much so almost all the working time I have to spend in the
office. Sometimes during the exams held by the universities, colleges and high
school , I have to go there to inspect. I’m very busy. Sometimes when I feel tired I
13
listen to some music or enter the internet to enjoy some interesting stories or just to
read international news. My work is also involving meeting many people so I have
many chances to meet many kinds of people. It is interesting. I’m the kind of
extrovert person so my colleagues like me. During the rest we often talk about
work, world news, music, culture or sports. Sometimes we have arguments but it
only make more intimate. I stop work at around 6 p.m and get back home by
motorbike. I’m really pleased with my work.
20. Shopping (Mua bán)
I usually work hard during the week, therefore whenever I have a day off I like to
do something to relax both physically and mentally. Shopping is one activity that
satisfies me. What could be more pleasant than touring around the market. It’s a
great place for watching people as well as seeing all the different merchandise for
sale. Everything I need is at the market, such as clothes, house wares, hard wares,
bicycles and even live chickens! It is a place full of energy and activity. I often go
to the market, even if I’ve nothing special in mind to buy although I will admit.
There is always something I want! There is such a wide variety of items available
that you can usually get things at a very reasonable price.
21. Foods and drinks ( Đồ ăn và uống)
In general, I would say that Vietnamese people have a very healthy diet. We eat a
lot of vegetables, fruit and fish and very little meat. The base of our diet is rice
which we eat very day, in one form or another. Our diet has been influenced by
Malaysia, China, France so it is very divers. One course can be spicy and the next
could be sweet. Soft drinks, such as soda, coca cola and seven up are available
here, but we also have many delicious fruit drinks which I think are much more
healthy for you. There is a variety of domestic and foreign beer and wine although
its consumption is very low. Many women in Viet Nam have never tasted alcohol.
22. Language learning ( Học tiếng anh)
To really understand a culture, you must speak the language. It is not only the
foundation of communication, but also the basis of social hierarchy, protocol and
14
humor. You can learn much of how people relate to each other by knowing the
ways in which they speak to one another. By understanding the language, you can
understand behavior. Through knowing the language, you can comprehend the
national sense of humor. The first thing to do when acquiring a new language is to
listen to it. Let the sounds flow over you even if you don’t understand any of the
words. Before I studied a language, I listened to others talking, watched local T.V
shows and listened to music presented in that language. When I began my lessons,
I already had a sense of what the language sounded like, and it was not so
completely foreign to me.
It is very important to use the language as often as you can. Use it or lose it as the
experts say. Even saying the simplest phrases over and over, help you to absorb
new phrases you will learn in the future. The learning process should be in a spiral
direction always beginning from a solid base of vocabulary and grammar that you
have already accomplished.
Learning a language shows initiative, diligence and intelligence. Apart from that
learning a new language can be fun. You meet new friends and together you tackle
what first seems insurmountable, and yet, little by little you begin to understand,
speak, learn and communicate. It can give you a real sense of accomplishment.
There is a trend, all over the world, to learn English. It seems that English has
become the international language of business. Most leading countries in the world
speak English, or have English as a recognized second language. You can open up
many doors, if you master this language.
In closing, learning a new language will always be helpful. I can well imagine an
employer saying “Well, we’d like to hire this person because he speaks three
languages instead of just one!”
23.Sports (Thể thao)
The idea of sport has been around since the early Greeks, and probably even
earlier. The Olympics began as a venue for socializing with neighboring villages
and displaying physical endurance and strength of the most athletic citizens. As the
Olympics grew, many countries joined in. Generally, a country becomes well-know
because of its athletes. For example, Asians are known for their prowess in table
15
tennis while North Americans are known for their skill in baseball. Competition is
a healthy activity whether it is against your own individual limits, another
individual or a group.
Many people engage in some type of physical activity. Some prefer contact sports,
such as rugby, soccer and hockey while others prefer non-contact sport such as
swimming, badminton and tennis. Whatever your preference, participating in
sports prolongs life, builds strength and endurance and help ease stress.
24.Love ( Tình yêu)
There are so many things in this world to love, from delicious rich chocolate go
good music, from a beautiful sunset to a new wardrobe. Generally, though when
we talk of love we refer to that love between humans. There are various forms of
this type of love too. The love of a mother to her children is very different from the
love between two sweet hearts. Sometimes a person can really love another yet
reciprocation may not occur. This can be very frustrating.
As we grow older, I believe our concept of love changes and mature. There is a big
difference between the “puppy love” of a young school aged child and the adult,
intellectual love of a grown up.
People talk of “love at first sight” yet. I think the term would be truer if it was
“attraction at first sight”. I believe true love takes time to develop and happens
over a lengthy period of time getting to really know and understand each other.
Sometimes we see a person in a room and an attraction begins. Is it a chemical
reaction in our body? So say some scientists. Is it the other person’s appearance,
stance, way of speaking and body language compelling them to us? So say the
psychologists.
Whatever the reasons there is always the chance that love many follow and the
only way to really find out is to be the first to say “hello”.
25.Superstitions (Sự mê tín dị đoan)
What do you do when a black cat crosses your park? In some cultures, this action
is simply ignored, while in others a person will spin around 3 times to remove any
bad luck that may develop.
16
Some people are more superstitions than other, but even the hardened non-believer
has some kind of superstition (they just won’t tell you about it). Many of us are
afraid to talk about a future event, such as a new job or opportunity, because they
fear that talking about it will lessen the chance of the occasion to occur.
There are many interesting superstitions from around the world. In Japan, if you
see a hearse go by, you must cover your thumbs so that someone close to you will
not die. In Viet Nam seeing a funeral brings good luck. In Christian countries,
people will make the sign of the cross and pray for the soul of the departed.
It is difficult to trace the origins of many superstitions yet we will continue to
believe in them. In North America, if you spill salt you must take some and throw
it over your left shoulder. When I see people doing this I ask them why. Usually,
they don’t remember the reason but will never break the habit of throwing the salt
over their shoulder.
In Viet Nam, some people are very superstitions of a cat being on a bus. The idea
stems from the notion that the cat’s meow sounds like the whine of a poor person.
If you hear this sound you will become poor. Cat owners have learned to feed their
cats wine or a strong spirit before a bus trip. It will sleep soundly, thus make no
sound.
Superstitions can make our life interesting and its fun to learn about other countries
beliefs. We must be careful, though not to take them too seriously or else we would
appear very foolish and weak.
26.Famous peoples ( Người nổi tiếng)
Famous peoples come from all walks of life, from politicians to movie stars, from
athletes to gods. Some people are born into frame, such as the British Royal
Family. Some people become famous for all the wrong reasons, like Hitler. A
person can be famous in his or her own circle of friends or neighborhood, makes
the best spring rolls I ever tasted. Although she is not a millionaire, nor a celebrity
all over the country, she is distinguished in our village.
I can’t imagine being a famous person. I think it would bring a certain amount of
hardship and public responsibility into your life. Everyone would know where you
are going what you are saying and doing and how you are living. Privacy would be
17
a very difficult thing to attain and it would be very hard to enjoy the simple things
in life, like going fishing with your friends. I never want to become too famous
because if I was famous, I couldn’t maintain my privacy any more.
27.Free time, entertainment ( Thời gian rảnh rỗi và giải trí)
I only have Sunday off, so I have very little free time. Sunday is a wonderful day
for me to spend time with friends and family. One of the things I really enjoy doing
on Sunday morning is to go fishing with my friends, although I am not always
successful in catching fish. It is a time to relax and talk about the previous week’s
events and future plans. I usually go back home in the late afternoon. My family
often joins other relatives on Sunday evening at a karaoke restaurant and we all
have a good time together. It is especially fun when my father gets up to sing.
Please don’t tell him I said this, but he is a very bad singer! Once in a while I will
go to a movie on Sunday with my friends or my brother. Sometimes, though, I just
stay at home, listening to music, watching videos or reading. Do you feel bored
when you hear about my free time, teacher?
28.Travel (Giao thông)
At present, in Viet Nam travel in rather difficult. We have few roads and the ones
we have few roads and the ones we have are often very crowded and in poor
condition. It takes a long time to drive somewhere. We also have a railway system
that connects HCM city with Hanoi city. I believe there are 3 or 4 trains a day to
choose from each day. The trains are old, but are usually pretty reliable. I think it is
very romantic to travel by train and I love the “clock-clack” sound of the wheels.
Viet Nam Airlines have improved quite a bit over the last. 2 years and their
reputation are spreading world-wide. There are many flights now both inside and
outside the country. I would say most people in Viet Nam travel by motorbike or
bicycle, as cars are still a luxury. Another way of getting around cities is using a
xichlo. I don’t think you will see these in any other country, so they are rather
unique.
18
29.Personal identification (self introduction) (Tự giới thiệu bản thân)
My name is Toan. I’m 51 years old. I’m an official in education office. I’ve been
married for 22 years. There are 4 people in my family: me, my wife and 2 my sons.
My wife is a teacher. She is very busy. Both 2 my sons are studying in universities
so they are not always home. They wish they would become a financial manager
and a good doctor. I am very busy, too. Ordinary day, I go to work at 7 a.m and
come back home at 6 a.m. I am so proud of them. Sometimes they come back
home and we usually sit talking merrily. At weekend or on holidays we is always
full of laughter.
I love my family and I’m really pleased with my work.
30.House and home (Nhà tôi)
31.Life at home. (Cuộc sống ở nhà)
I get up very early in the morning to do my morning exercises and then have
breakfast. I usually listen to the news on the radio of read the paper at this time. I
leave for work at 7.00 a.m o’clock and usually return home at 5.00 p.m o’clock. I
don’t go home for lunch, so I eat with my mother prepare for dinner. I often stay
home in the evening, watching T.V or studying. I don’t like to go out because of
my heavy schedule. I need my rest! Our house is fairly quiet during the week, as
we all either have to work or go to school early in the morning. Of course Sunday
is everyone’s free time, so there is always a lot of activities in my house on that
day I know my home life might sound routine, however, I enjoy it.
19
32.Education and future careers (Giáo dục và nghề nghiệp tương lai)
In the urban areas of Viet Nam, most young people go to college or university,
after 12 years of elementary and high school. I was very fortunate to receive a
scholarship and so my parents don’t have to pay my tuition, although they help me
out with lunch money and other school expenses. Most university programs consist
of 4 or 5 years of study I am in a 5 year Engineering program and I also study
English part-time in the evening. There are many universities to choose from but I
think my university is the best! There is a wide variety of fields of study to choose
from for example business management, economics, education and engineering.
The enrollment is high at my university – over 5000 students. Class sizes, as well
can be large but the professors do their best to give individual attention as much as
possible.
33.Foreign language (Ngoại ngữ)
Almost everyone I know has studied a foreign language to one degree or another. It
is said “you will never understand another country until you can speak their
language gives one a great insight into their culture. I also think that learning a new
language will never do you any harm; rather it will be very useful. Right now there
is a big emphasis in Viet Nam on learning the English language, as it is one of the
bridges to our future. It has just recently been announced that all employees of
government institutions are strongly encouraged to be fluent in English by 1997.
English is a way to exchange history, ideas and other information with so many
different countries! Just think of all the countries that have English as their first or
second language.
34.Weather in Viet Nam (Thời tiết ở Việt Nam)
The northern area of Viet Nam enjoys 4 seasons, while the southern regions only
have two, namely wet and dry. Some say there are 2 temperatures in the south –
bearable and unbearable. The mountain regions can be cold, even in the south
however I wouldn’t compare them to the cold of the Himalayas. During the wet
20
season which runs from June to October, almost everyday there will be
precipitation. It brings about a pleasant cooling off of the temperature but it can
sometimes cause floods. The coast of Viet Nam experiences a stormy season
during the months June and July but don’t think the storms are as severe as the
typhoons of Japan on the hurricanes of the Caribbean. Of course, there is no snow
in Viet Nam. Our only experience of it is through pictures or films. Quite frankly
that is enough experience for me.
35.Public services ( Các dịch vụ xã hội)
Our country has all the necessary services that link us together and with the outside
world. Right now, we a little behind, but we are growing in leaps and bounds every
year. We have postal services, faxes, telephones, use of satellites and computers.
Unfortunately, it is still pretty costly, in fact did you know that long distance
telephone rates are among the highest here than anywhere in the world? Apart from
communication facilities, our hotel and restaurant industry is growing rapidly. Just
take a walk down any street in HCM City and you will see all kinds of
construction! Office buildings, showrooms and apartment complexes are virtually
rising out of the ground. Transportation, via air, is one of the concentrations of our
government.
36.Places ( Phong cảnh, danh thắng)
There are so many beautiful places to go to in Viet Nam. I am really hard pressed
to name my favorites. Our country may be small, but it offers a variety of terrain.
Between the rich cultivation areas of the Mekong Delta to the rugged shores of Ha
long bay. You can enjoy cool mountain villages or breezy, sunny beaches. Apart
from beautiful locales, we also have a vast history that is preserved in art galleries,
museums and palaces. The architecture is varied so you can see many different
styles of buildings.
21
All in all, place of interest are numerous and we’ll never get bored visiting them.
For example, Ha Noi is the place where many historical relics can be found. Its
beautiful weather in autumn is usually a theme for poets to write their poems.
Then, Hue offers strikingly beautiful sights of the Huong River and the Ngu
Mount. Its imperial places and mausoleums fascinate us. Dalat is also an
unforgettable place for holiday makers thanks to its ideal weather all year round.
Ho Chi Minh city is also famous for its beautifu Saigon river port and many other
things such as vast shopping centres, luxurious hotels and restaurants.
37. Health and welfare (Sức khỏe và hạnh phúc)
I think that most people in Vietnam take their health very serlously proper diet,
exercise and mininal amounts of smoking or drinking are ways to stay fit both in
mind and body. Should the need arese there are hospitals and clinics avaiable in the
urban areas. Unfortunately, the rural areas are still in great need of proper health
care. One of the problems is that some areas are very hard to get being isolate in a
village with no road access. I know our government is doing the best. It can and
hopefully, in the near future, health care will be at everyone’s fingertips. We also
have social services such as institutions for the physically or mentally disabled and
orphanages. We do not have a pension system in place, so children are expected to
look after their parents in their older years.
38. Relationships with others. (Quan hệ với mọi người)
In my family, there is a great love and respect for my parents. All my parents. All
my brothers and sisters count on them for guidance and supports. My patents are
easy to talk to and are always ready to listen. They have high expectations for all
their children but that does not mean we can’t have fun together. Our family meals
are often full of lively conversation. I would say I get along best with my older
brother. We are only three years apart in age and so we have similar interests and
hangout with the same group of friends. I can say our relationship is friendly most
of the time. We sometimes argue about career choices, music and film stars,
however, it is all done in a loving way and nerver comes to blows. Most young
22
people in VietNam have many friends as opposed to just one or two. We do many
things in groups and enjoy the diversity of knowing many different people. The
average age of marriage is 25 for women and 30 for men.
39. Hobbles ( Sở thích riêng)
Hobbies are those things that we can indulge ouselves in and not feel guilty about
wasting time. Hobbies can help us to relax. They also further stimulate our creative
and intellectual growth. Hobbies can be a solitary venture or ones that involve
others. My father has comvined the two types. He grows flowers at home. He is
also an active member in our community’s horticultural society. He enjoys learning
about new strains of plants, how to grow them and under what circumstances are
best for them to thrive. The horticultural societay gives him an opportunity to share
his hobby with others with a common interest. A month or two before spring
arrives,m our house is full of seedlings. Every shelf, every extra space is used for
beginning of the flowers, which will be transplanted when the winters frost no
longer is a threat. My father wasters and monitors his little new born flowers. As
we have a large garden my father’s hobby is a monumental task. He has a lot of
work ahead of him in the early spring when he begins to trasplant all the new
flowering phants.
Hobbies are an enjoyable activity that helps make us well rounded humans.
40.Habits ( Thói quen, tập quán)
Everyone has habits, some good and some bad. When people are nervous, they
display some of the strangerst habits. I have several make friends who will sit and
move their knees rapidly up and down. When they are in a stressful situation. On
the other hand I’ve witnessed many female friends and play with their hair. Some
people chew their fingernails, while others will constantly, play with an object in
their hand such as eraser, pen, etc. These habits can be very distracting to the
listener, yet the speaker rarely is aware of what he or she is doing.
23
How do you begin your day? Do you do the same thing every morning? Morning
habits are different for each person, but generally most would agree that if you
have a good morning routine. You will begin your day on a positive note. In my
case, it is very important to have a lot of time in the morning. I like to shower,
listen to the news or read the paper and leisurely plan my day, while having coffee
and light breakfast. When I have to rush in the morning my whole day seems out of
order.
Successful students are ones who have developed good study habits. They will set
aside a period of time, every day to revlew their notes, practice a lesson and finish
their homework. The succesful worker is one who is punctual, organizes time
properly. In order to be most productive. He always stays at work until he meets
his daily goals.
Having positive habits in our work, study and social life can prompt us to be
productive, pleasant and successful individuals.
41. Friendships ( Tình bạn)
Perhaps one of the most important things in life is to have good, lasting
friendships. Friends make life interesting and so much fun. They make us laugh,
they make us think. They provide opportunities to do things that we can not do
alone. They help us to find new interests. They give us support and help when we
need. They provide us with the companionship to make us happy.
“The only way to get a friend is to be one”, said Ralph Waldo Emerson. We must
improve our fundamental selves if we are to have good friends. In order to do so,
we have to understand our limitations, expand our intelligence, pursue interests and
be at pence with ourselves. Only when we love ourselves, then we can begin to
love others. We can give our friends support when necessary encourage them, and
make them feel important. We can do this because we have a strong sense of self.
Doing things out of love and respect for a friend make us worthy of the trust and
support they return to us. Then they will in turn, feel they have some responsibility,
respect and trust toward us.
24
In conclusion, friendships are important and they grow from common interests,
from doing thing together, for one another and from sharing thoughts, feeling and
confidences.
42. Spare time ( Thời gian rỗi)
“It is impossible to enjoy doing nothing if one does not have a lot to do” K.Jerome
makes a good argument. If one has to much spare time we become bored easily and
are boring people. If we can take a moment for ourselves in our routine feeling
refreshed and rejuvenated.
Many people fill their days with so much activity that they have no free time. This
makes for a hectic and unfullfilling life. A person will feet theyt are on a treadmill
and begin to burn-out. These are the people who complain there is never enough
time in the day. They keep going around and around in circles.
On the other hand, a positive and productive person knows the value of taking a
few moments throughout the day. They take the time to relax go for a short walk,
or sit in the park for a few moments. In our school there are fifteen-minute breaks
between classes and it gives everyone a chance to prepare for their next lesson
have a cup of tea or just chat with colleagues. It is important for us all to make
spare time for ourselves, whether it is a one-hour nap in the middle of the day or a
half-hour talking with your family during meal times. We all need spare time for a
chance to rest, reflect and invigorate ourselves.
43. Vacation (Kỳ nghỉ)
To many, this is the best eight-letter word in the English language. A vacation is
always something to look forward to and provides us with a much needed rest from
the hard work of our daily lives. It is a breather, a respite, a chance to recuperate
and a very necessary part of our life. Many people like to spend their holidays
25
