Task 1. Read the following passage and find all the verbs that are used in the past simple and the
connectors (time expressions) in the story. (Đọc đoạn văn sau và tìm tất cả các động từ được sử dụng ở
thì quá khứ đơn và các từ nối (cụm từ diễn đạt thời gian) trong câu chuyện.)
A narrative
14th July 1995 is a day I shall never forget. On that day I stared death on the face.
Our flight was due to leave at 11 a.m., and I arrived at the airport quite early. We got on the plane at
10.30 and the plane took off on time. The air-hostesses were just beginning to serve our lunch when the
plane began to shake.
At first, we thought we were flying in bad weather. We were told to stay seated and fasten our seat belts.
Then suddenly the plane seemed to dip. We realised we were in danger. Many people screamed in panic.
We all thought we had only minutes to live.
Then, just when we had given up all hope, we felt the plane slowly gained height. A few minutes later the
pilot announced that everything was all right. We were all overjoyed and relieved. One hour later we
landed safely.
It was the most frightening experience of my life.
Các em hãy sử dụng kiến thức đã học về thì quá khứ đơn ở trên để tìm các động từ và các từ nối về gian
được dùng ở thì QKĐ.
 Các động từ được dùng ở thì quá khứ đơn: stared, was, arrived, got, took off, began, thought, were
told, seemed, realized, seemed, were, screamed, had, felt, announced, landed.
 Các từ nối về thời gian: on that day, when, at first, then, just when, a few minutes later, one hour
later.
Như vậy, các em thấy khi kể lại một câu chuyện trong quá khứ thì người ta thường sử dụng thì QKĐ
và các từ nối thời gian như when; on that day; at first, then, time + later, ….

Lưu ý:
 When: dùng để nối 2 mệnh đề, ví dụ: just when we had given up all hope, we felt the plane slowly
gained height.
 Then: sau đó, rồi, rồi thì. Chúng ta dùng then để biểu thị sự nối tiếp trước sau của cách hành động:
We saw a movie and then went out for dinner.
We filled up the car and then began the trip
Let me finish this job, then we'll go.
Give her the letter to read, then she'll understand.
 Khi kể lại các sự kiện, chúng ta dùng “at first” không nên dùng “firstly”, firstly được dùng để liệt
kê ý kiến, quan điểm.

dây an toàn. Thình lình máy bay hình như lao xuống. Chúng tôi nhận thấy minh đang gặp nguy hiểm.
Nhiều người kêu thét lên hoảng sợ. Tất cả chúng tôi đều nghĩ rằng mình chỉ còn sống vài phút nưã
thôi.

Rồi ngay khi chúng tôi hoàn toàn tuyệt vọng, chúng tôi cảm thấy máy bay dần dần lấy lại độ cao. Vài
phút sau phi công thông báo là mọi việc đã ổn. Tất cả chúng tôi đều vui mừng nhẹ nhõm. Một giờ sau
máy bay hạ cánh an toàn.
Đó là một sự việc khùng khiếp nhất trong đời tôi.

Last year, I spent my summer holidays at a seaside town. The hotel was modern and comfortable. I had a
wonderful holiday until the fire.
It was Saturday evening and everybody was sitting in the discotheque (which was) on the ground floor. It
was crowded with people. They were dancing and singing happily. Suddenly we smelt smoke. Then black
smoke began to fill the room. Everybody started to scream in panic. People ran toward the fire exits. One
door was blocked. Many people began to coughing and choking.
Then, just as we thought we had only minutes to live, the fire brigade arrived. Firemen fought their way
into the room and soon everyone was safely out of the building. Luckily nobody was seriously hurt. It
was the most frightening experience of my life.
