Changes
Would you like to learn to speak Mandarin,
the main language of the Chinese people?
Do you think it’s a good idea to learn about
environmental problems like climate change at
school? In the UK today schools want to teach
new subjects, not traditional ones. They want to
teach students about things that are important
today.
For example, China is becoming a very
important country for business. Some teachers
think it’s better for students to learn Mandarin at
school than Spanish or French. At the moment
French is the most popular language in UK
schools but it’s not very useful for the students’
future jobs.
Geography lessons are also changing. Some
people think it’s more important to learn about
modern environmental problems in geography
than to learn about continents and countries.
A lot of people don’t like the changes. They think
it’s important for children to study traditional
subjects at schools and learn different subjects
later. Of course, parents want their children to

learn EVERYTHING but unfortunately there isn’t
enough time in the day and I’m sure children
don’t want to stay at school in the evenings too!

The end of a long journey
Yesterday was an important day for Thomas Burns from Portsmouth. He retired
after 45 years as a bus driver in the city. Here he writes about the changes he
has seen over the years.
‘Over the years a lot of things have changed in Portsmouth and I think it’s more
difficult to be a bus driver today than before. There are more cars, more
cyclists, more traffic jams and more people in a hurry! I’ve seen a lot of
changes in the town centre too. When I started you could drive along the High
Street. Now you can’t. It’s for people on foot! There are lots of roads you can’t
drive along.
Another change is that 40 years ago we had conductors. Conductors were
people who worked on the bus too and they walked up and down the bus and
sold the tickets. Today the driver has to sell tickets. Also, the conductors
watched the passengers for any trouble. Today we have CCTV cameras instead!
But a CCTV camera can’t tell a teenager to get off the bus!
The passengers haven’t changed a lot. I’ve met some really nice people and
some very rude people too. But that’s life, isn’t it?’
6 Are the sentences true or false?
1 People want to get to places quickly these days. ___
2 There is more traffic on the roads today than before. ___
3 The city centre is the same as it was when Thomas started as a driver. ___

The end of a long journey
Yesterday was an important day for Thomas Burns
from Portsmouth. He retired after 45 years as a bus
driver in the city. Here he writes about the changes

he has seen over the years.
‘Over the years a lot of things have changed in
Portsmouth and I think it’s more difficult to be a
bus driver today than before. There are more cars,
more cyclists, more traffic jams and more people
in a hurry! I’ve seen a lot of changes in the town
centre too. When I started you could drive along
the High Street. Now you can’t. It’s for people on
foot! There are lots of roads you can’t drive along.
Another change is that 40 years ago we had
conductors. Conductors were people who worked
on the bus too and they walked up and down
the bus and sold the tickets. Today the driver has
to sell tickets. Also, the conductors watched the
passengers for any trouble. Today we have CCTV
cameras instead! But a CCTV camera can’t tell a
teenager to get off the bus!
The passengers haven’t changed a lot. I’ve met
some really nice people and some very rude people
too. But that’s life, isn’t it?’

Good morning! I’m in the new Jackson Shopping Centre today
and there are a lot of people here.

Hello, and what’s your name?
Petra
Hi Petra, nice to meet you. I’m Tom Parker from Radio Mardon.
This is exciting! I listen to your programme every day!
Good! Where are you from Petra?
I’m from Petersbrook.
So, you don’t live in Mardon.
No, I come here to go shopping.
And do you like the Jackson Shopping centre?
Yes. I think it’s very good. I like the shops and the cafés! It’s very

modern.

And what’s your name?
I’m Jack. I’m from Mardon.
And what’s your favourite shop in the new centre jack.
Oh, for me it’s got to be the music shop. I listen to a lot of
classical music and I play the piano.

Hi, and what’s your name?
This is Anna. She’s from France. She doesn’t speak English. She
loves shopping too.
Does she like the new shopping centre?
Yes, she does, but she thinks the shops here are very expensive!

Good morning, madam. And your name is….?
I’m Barbara. This is my first visit to the centre. It’s lovely!
And what do you like about it?
Well, there’s a bus stop right outside. I don’t have to walk far. And
I love the clothes shops!

And how about you, sir?
Well, I’m Barbara’s husband. I always go shopping with her!
Do you like the centre?
Yes, I like the book shop. I sit in there and read my newspaper. I
don’t want to look at clothes with Barbara!

Oh yes. My friend Ben and I go to the chess club on Wednesdays.
It’s a great game, but there aren’t a lot of members.

Darren, what do you think about the school?
It’s a really good school, but I can’t stand the uniform. It’s green
and black. It’s horrible! I’d like to wear my own clothes.

Do you like the school Rosie?
It’s OK. But the food is awful. It’s expensive and at lunchtime you
have to wait and wait. It’s always cold! And there aren’t tables
and chairs for everybody.

Do you think it’s a good school Mark?
It’s great. We learn a lot here. The teachers are fantastic. They’re
really interesting and the work is interesting too. My favourite
lessons are English and Spanish.

What are your favourite lessons, Gill?
I like IT. They’ve got very good IT rooms with loads of new
machines. You can go in there at lunchtime and after school too.

And Jed, what do you like about this school?
It’s a very modern place and all the buildings are new. We have
lots of fields to play football and other sports. Some schools are
small and old. Our isn’t!

Presenter I’m here at the new Parkland Safari Park and I’m talking to Gina
Cliff. Gina’s the director of the park. Gina, good morning.
Gina
Hello.
Presenter This is a fantastic safari park. My family love it.
Gina
Thank you. We hope people enjoy their visits here.
Presenter Why do you think this safari park is so popular?
Gina
Well, we have a lot of different animals here. There are animals
from every continent. People can’t usually see them – only in
books or on holiday! Here they can drive past amazing animals

and see how they behave.
Presenter What are your favourite animals here?
Gina
Oh – I have lots of favourites! I love the lions. You know, you can
drive in your car through the lion park. They come up to your car
door!
Presenter Isn’t that very dangerous?
Gina
It’s not dangerous when you’re in the car. It’s more dangerous out
of it! People have to stay in their cars!
Presenter Do you have another favourite?
Gina
Well, we have a lake in the centre of the park and there are some
unusual fish in it. There are also some beautiful water birds.
Presenter Do you have any special things for young children to look at?
Gina
There is a snake and insect house! The children love that! The
parents don’t! And we have a children’s zoo. Children can play
with some of the small animals there and they can see some new
baby animals. It’s not dangerous for them at all.
Presenter And you have a shop and a restaurant too.
Gina
That’s right. When you’re tired you can sit down and have a meal.
And you can buy some souvenirs from the shop.
Presenter A really good day out for all the family! Thank you very much, Gina.

tired. Our hotel was very small and the rooms were cold. It was near the
railway station and we could hear the trains all through the night!

wonderful. It was a shopping holiday really! My mum and I had a lot of fun.
