Chapter 5
Problem 1 A setup similar to the one shown in Figure P5.26 is often used in hospitals to
support and apply a horizontal traction force to an injured leg. (a) Determine the force of
tension in the rope supporting the leg. (b) What is the traction force exerted to the right
on the leg?
(Problem 26/p.133)

Problem 2 An object of mass M is held in place by an applied force F and a pulley
system as shown in Figure P5.61. The pulleys are massless and frictionless.
(a) Draw diagrams showing the forces on each pulley. Find (b) the tension in each section
of rope, T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5 and (c) the magnitude of F
(Problem 61/p.136)

Problem 3 An 8.40-kg object slides down a fixed, frictionless, inclined plane. Use a
computer to determine and tabulate (a) the normal force exerted on the object and (b) its
acceleration for a series of incline angles (measured from the horizontal) ranging from 0°
to 90° in 5° increments. (c) Plot a graph of the normal force and the acceleration as
functions of the incline angle. (d) In the limiting cases of 0° and 90°, are your results
consistent with the known behavior?
(Problem 68/p.137)
