Phần I: Ngữ âm
I./ Âm tiết (syllable)
Âm tiết của từ là do cấu tạo của một âm phụ âm / một nhóm âm phụ âm (consonant sound) và một âm
nguyên âm (vowel sound) hay nhị trùng âm (dipthong).
Ví dụ

Trong từ "car" âm phụ âm / k / kết hợp với âm nguyên âm / a: / tạo thành một âm tiết

Trong từ "blue" âm phụ âm / b / và / l / kết hợp với âm nguyên âm / u: / tạo thành một âm tiết.

Trong từ "snow" âm phụ âm / s / và / n / kết hợp với nhị trùng âm / / tạo thành một âm tiết
Đôi khi chỉ duy nhất đợc tạo bởi một âm nguyên âm (vowel sound) hoặc một nhị trùng âm (dipthong).
