DEFORESTATION
The Amazon forest covers five million square kilometers, an area as big as the
whole Europe excluding Russia. It contains one third of the world’s trees. However,
the trees are disappearing. By 1974, a quarter of the forest had already been cut
down. In the following year, 1975, four per cent of the remaining trees went. If the
destruction of the forest continues at the same rate, there will be nothing left in a
few years.
Scientists say that the disappearance of trees is already causing changes in
climate. In Peru, there is less snow than before on the high peaks of the Andes
mountains. In Bolivia, there is very little rain.
What will happen if more of the Amazon forest cut down? According to
climatologists if the Amazon forest disappears, there will be less oxygen and it will
be difficult for us to breathe, the temperature will rise, the ice-caps at the North and
the South poles will melt. Even the sea level will rise. Therefore, seaside cities will

be flooded.
Scientists do not agree about the calculations which can be done in different ways
with different results. But all the scientists agree that if we destroy the Amazon
forest, it will be an environment suicide. Life on Earth will become difficult, and it
may become impossible.

The first skyscrapers
The term “skyscraper” has been used in a number of ways over the years: an
ornament on the top of a building, a high-flying bird, a very tall man and a sail at
the top of a mast. At the end of the nineteenth century, the word was used to refer
to buildings of ten storeys or more. Later, a lift was used to take people up to the
higher floor, as in the most famous skyscraper, the Empire State Building.
During the middle ages, the people who lived in the cities of Northern Europe
began to build great cathedrals. Tall spires were added to make these churches
higher and bring them closer to heaven.
In the nineteenth century, as cities grew more crowded with people looking for
work the value of land rose. New businesses were starting and in order to make
room for offices on a small plot of land, it was necessary to build higher. But the
problem was that to put up a stone building of such height, the walls on the ground
floor would have to be more than two metres thick to hold the weight of the
building. So another material was required to make skyscraper possible
About this time, three buildings were put up that used iron or steel to support
great weight with safety. They were the Crystal Palace in London, the Eifel Tower in
Paris and the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. From then on, architects started to
experiment with buildings that had steel frames. Today, the tallest skyscrapers are a
hundred storeys or more, compared to the first 10 storeys skyscrapers, which seem
tiny.

Unimate. It was used to help make cars. It looked like a giant arm.
In the future, we will have even more robots. They will do things that we can’t do.

Dear Grandma and Grandpa,
Thank you both for the wonderful wedding present. Both Jill and I have
always wanted to go to France and visit the many museums. We were so
shocked when we first saw the airplane tickets that we almost fainted! It
was more than we could have hoped to receive airplane tickets to France
as a wedding present! Paris is wonderful! The only trouble is trying to
decide where to go. I want to go to the museums, but Jill wants to see
some of the beautiful traditional churches. In the end, we decided to see
the churches in the morning (when the weather is cool), and the
museums in the afternoon (because they’re air-conditioned). This allows
us to get the most sightseeing done during our two-week stay. There are
many coffee shops, too. Jill likes sitting outside and watching people, but I
like sitting inside where I can enjoy the smell of the coffee. French coffees
are so much more aromatic and stronger than the coffee we are used to
back home. Thanks again for the lovely trip! We sent you a postcard, but I
think we will arrive back home before you get it. It is a picture of the Eiffel
Tower.
Love,
Freddy and Jill
