WRITING TASK 2: BALANCED-ARGUMENT ESSAYS
Tele-working/55,56,57,58,59
In recent years the vast expansion of information and communication technology
had made tele-working more practical. Some are interested in this new way of
working, while others do not think about it positively. The arguments surrounding
the issue of working from home will be examined in this essay.
Allowing workers to work from home is favored for some reasons. Firstly, costs for
employers would be reduced because businesses would require less office space,
and this is often situated in the center of large cities. Secondly, workers’ life would
be improved in many different ways. They could also combine their work with their
family life, especially when they have young children or old people to look after.
Finally, they would not need to travel to get to work, so they get more free time for
relaxation.
To some people, working from home is not always a good choice. Workers would
miss the social communication such as seeing colleagues and meeting customers. In
many cases, tele-workers become depressed after a time of working alone with the
computer. Besides, supervising tele-workers is more complicated than supervising
workers in the same office.
In conclusion, I believe that although many workers welcome the opportunity to go
out to work, others would find the chance to work from home very convenient.
Where possible, I think workers should be offered the choice, but not forced to work

from home unless they wish to. (236 words)

Many parents think teachers should give students homework every day, but some
others are against the idea. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Sample writing
Homework has been an indispensable activity during students’ learning process.
Many parents believe that teachers should give students homework every day.
However, some others oppose this idea. These both views will be discussed in this
essay before arriving at a conclusion.
Daily homework is in favor of several parents for some benefits. First, it helps to
review their lessons. Studies have suggested that learners need to be exposed to a
piece of information for a certain number of times in order for them to remember it.
Second, homework also helps set up students’ habit of self-study, gradually students
can learn how to manage their time to complete their duty.
On the other hand, there are also reasons why other people are against daily
homework for students. First of all, if students have to do homework every day, they
may feel fed up with their study because they do not have time to relax, to entertain
themselves or to do other things necessary in their daily life. Besides, too much
homework may affect students’ health. In fact, when they have to sit at their table
studying with piles of homework every day, they will become tired, and even have
some problems with their back, eyes, and head. The feeling of not completing the
assignment, of being scolded or punished by their teachers, and of losing face may
gradually make students become depressed, which is very dangerous for
themselves.
In my opinion, homework is good in students’ learning process. However, because of
its negative effects, teachers should consider how much homework and how often
to assign it. Outside the school, students need to have time to relax and to live their
own lives beyond their study. So, teachers should not give students, especially

children, too much homework every day. (296 words)

Some people believe that young people nowadays have a more stressful life than
previous generations, while some others support the opposing view point. Discuss
the issue and give your opinion.
With the advancement of modern technology, life seems to be more complicated in
today’s world. Many people believe that the youth in modern time suffer more
stressful life than previous generations. However, others have opposing viewpoints.
In this essay, the two sides of the issue will be discussed.

PRACTICE/59: Read the following text about taking care of old people.
It has been common in some countries that old people live in the retirement
houses. In some other countries, it is not acceptable for children to let their old
parents live in such places.
Write an essay to an educated reader to discuss both views and give your opinion.
Taking care of the old people is the major concerns of individuals. In some countries,
it is popular that the elderly are arranged to live in retirement houses while in other
countries, it is unacceptable for children to let their old parents live in such places.
Both views on how to take care of old people will be discussed in this essay.
In some Western countries, old people usually live in retirement houses because of
several reasons. Firstly, the elderly are taken are better in retirement houses than at
home because their children are too busy with their work and spent little time for
their old parents. Secondly, in retirement houses, it is easy for old people to make
friends and talk to other people of the same age, so they are happier.
On the other hand, in Eastern countries, letting old people live in retirement houses
is unacceptable. In fact, according to these traditions and cultures, children are
responsible to look after their old parents. In addition, old people always want to live

with their children, transfer their experiences and help their children what they can
do. Therefore, they feel that they live a meaningful life with their children.
In conclusion, how to take care of old people is a controversial issue, and it depends
on each country or culture. However, I strongly believe that children should take
good care of their old parents at home because of their responsibility and love. (243

Task 2: Read the following extract about children doing paid work.
Sample writing
Doing part-time jobs has become more and more common among students these
days. Some people believe that children at secondary school should be allowed to do
some paid work to understand how hard to earn money. However, some others are
against this point of view. This essay will discuss both views of whether to allow
secondary students to have paid work or not.
That children at secondary level have a part-time job is supported for some reasons.
First of all, the children can learn a lot of social skills which are useful for their work
later and which make them more confident. Besides, they also have something to
add to their CV when they apply for a job in the future. Moreover, they know the
value of the money they earn, so they do not spend it wastefully. By the way, they
can somewhat share the financial burden with their family.
In contrast, some other people are against secondary students’ working to earn
money because they have their own arguments. First, the children may be so keen
on working and earning money that they cannot concentrate on their study. Second,
they may not have enough time to complete all the assignments and homework.
They may not have time to take enough rest; so they may be easy to get sick. Third,
secondary students are not mature enough to protect themselves from bad
behaviors or evils if they work outside the school or home.
In short, secondary students may have both benefits and problems when they take
part in a paid work. In my opinion, parents should allow their children to do parttime jobs if they want, but the parents should always keep an eye on their immature
children to make sure that everything is going well with the children. (299 words)
