I.

Rationale

It goes without saying that English is very essential and has a lot of benefits in today’s
society. More and more Vietnamese people, special students study English so that
they can not only access information and knowledge in the world, communicate with
foreign, or have many employment opportunities but also go abroad to study.
However, if you want to study abroad, first of all, you will probably need to submit
proof of your English language ability- IELTS or TOEFL (it’s depend on input conditions
of your university or college you’ll study ) . Therefore, to creat all chances for student
to achieve target, teacher at QNU applied IELTs curriculum for student.
So what is IELTS?
IELTS ( International English Language Testing System) is the world’s most popular
English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration, and is
designed to reflect how you will use English at study, at work, and at play, in your new
life abroad. IELTS assesses all of your English skills — reading, writing, listening and
speaking.
IELTS is challenge process and requires us to study hardly. It’s really not easy and it’s
more difficult for second-year students at QNU – beginners . All of 4 skills – reading,
writing, listening and speaking – have many difficulties but almost of the students
usually meet more difficulties in Reading. Because IELTS reading comprehension
exercise is not for you to be awared of all the article content, writing style, the author
implies . IElLTS reading requires readers quickly grasp the reader to answer 40
questions in 60 minutes. So if we have not advantaged all Reading skills for reading


test special Scanning and Skimming Skills , we will be stressfull under time’s preasure
and surely, you will get low score in Reading.
For that reasons, I decided to study on “ Scanning and Skimming Skills in IELTS
Reading of second- year students at QNU “ . I do hope that my research paper will
make a small contribution in exoerience learning IELTS Reading.


II.

Aims and Objectives of the study

1. Aims of the study

This study aims at investigating into the difficulties of learning IELTS Reading
of second-year students at QNU , knowledge about Scanning and Skimming
Skills in Reading , as well as solution to improve that skills.
2. Objectives the sudy

The study is intend to:
- Distinguish between Scanning Skill and Skimming Skill
- To point out weekness of the students in finding answer quickly in Reading
- To suggest solution for these proplems

3. Research question
a) What are the differences of Scanning Skill and Skimming Skill ?
b) Why must we use Scanning and Skimming Skill in reading IELTS test?
c) How do we use skimming / scanning skill ?
d) When do we use skimming / scanning skill?
