being banned from driving, following a shock drink-driving conviction.

with a two-year driving ban – which she managed to cut down
by six months by taking part in a driving safety course – after

being found about three times over the legal limit while driving.

‘I didn’t look
in a mirror
for three years’

ack in high school, I’d always
been what most people
would consider a ‘normal’
size. But after I graduated at 18,
things started to go downhill. A
couple of bad relationships and
difficulty finding a job meant I
turned to food for comfort. I was
eating when I was happy and when
I was sad. It was all junk food too – I

couldn’t get enough of fried chicken
and I loved tubs of ice cream. Then,
doctors diagnosed me with a binge
eating disorder. Here’s how, with
two years of hard work, I learnt to
look after my body again...

September 2016
I’m still shocked by the doctor’s
diagnosis, but in all honesty, it makes
sense. I’ve used any occasion in the past
three years or so as an excuse to overeat
– and it’s meant I’ve put on 10st. No
wonder I feel uncomfortable all the
time. I know I should think about
losing weight. I’ve tried a few faddy
diets but they’re just not working for
me. I can’t stick to them and restricting
myself just makes me want to binge
even more. Maybe 10st is just too bi
of a number to tackle...

On the outside, I am a
happy, bubbly 21-year-old,
always up for a laugh. But
on the inside, I feel so

insecure. I met my
girlfriend, Martita in May
2017 and although she
constantly tells me I’m
beautiful, I don’t feel it. I’ve
not looked in a mirror for
about three years now and
I wear loose, dark clothing
to disguise my bulky frame.
My mum, Lea, organises a
family dinner and she insists
we take a group picture.
When I see the photo of me
in my green blouse, I burst
into tears. I can’t believe I’ve
gained so much weight – I
don’t even recognise myself.
That morning I thought I’d
managed to cover up quite
well. But there’s just no
disguising just how big I am.

January 2018
Over Christmas, I wallow
in self-pity, trying to make
myself feel better by eating
even more than usual. But it’s
left me feeling sick, bloated
and heavier than ever, and
I’m finally realising I need to

make a change. I’ve heard
good things about plant-based
diets, and know a lot of my
friends have gone vegan. Since
meat and dairy products are
my biggest weaknesses, I’ve
decided to give it a go.
