2.THE MEANING OF THE NAME BAT TRANG.


-In the Sino-Vietnamese sense, the
word Bat ( 鉢 ) is the monk's eating
bowl (Sanskrit is Patra), the word Trang
( 鉢 , also read as Truong) means "big
yard“.

- Bat Trang is a pottery village with a half-millenary historic development
- There are many legends about the establishment of Bat Trang pottery village

- Under Ly – Tran Dynasty, Bat Trang village was established by the combination of 5 famous
families of Bo Bat village.
- A foreman of Nguyen family - named Nguyen Ninh Trang stayed in Bat Trang and started with
production of the first Bat Trang bricks.
+ Those bricks are made from apyrous clay and fire at very high temperature and used to construct the
foundation for palace in Royal Citadel.


II. ORIGIN


- Under the Ly dynasty, there were 3 scholars who were sent to the North “ Tong” as the
King’s envoy.
- The mission came to an end, they came back to the country then taught the craft to their
villagers.
+ Hua Vinh Kieu taught the Bat Trang’s residents how to make the cracked white enamel.



+ Dao Tri Tien taught the Tho Ha’s residents how to make the yellow enamel.



+ Luu Phuong Tu taught the Phu Lang’s residents how to make the deep red - yellowish
enamel.

From 15th - 17th century, Bat Trang’s ceramics were favorite products not only in
domestic market, but also foreign ones

restricting foreign trade policy of Trinh,
Nguyen dynasty, famous pottery making
villages like Bat Trang went through a
hard time.

Since 1986, the world gets a chance to know more about Vietnamese porcelain through many high
quality exported Bat Trang’s ceramic products

As time went by, the village’s products have developed and become well known for the best quality,
style and glaze, both inside and outside of the nation
