INTRODUCTION
1. The necessity of the thesis
Cosmetology education is one of the central issues of aesthetics as it
contributes significantly to the development and improvement of our personal
character. As a result, during his time, President Ho Chi Minh was interested in
developing the character of the Vietnamese people in all aspects: physical, moral,
intellectual and aesthetic. In particular, he was very interested in education,
especially aesthetic education for the younger generation - the future of the country.
Inheriting his ideology, during the process of leading the Vietnamese revolution, the
Communist Party of Vietnam paid great attention to the development of a wellrounded character. Our Party always establishes that the central task of our country's
culture and artistry is the contribution to the development of the character of the
Vietnamese people, to have wisdom, morality, soul, sentiment, lifestyle, a good
character and courage that are on par with the national reform, heading towards a
wealthy, strong and civilized society.
Over the past 80 years, the Party has always paid much attention to youth
work and youth development. Resolution 25-NQ / TW of The seventh plenum of
the 10th Party Central Committee affirmed that youths are the pillars, the future
leaders of the country, the assault force in the development and defense of the
Fatherland, one of the factors determining the success of the national
industrialization and modernization, international integration and socialist
development.
The youth of our country have goals and ambitions and the will to strive and
make dreams come true; they have faith, bravery, strength, and a readiness to face
whatever challenges may come their way. However, due to the psychological
factors of the age group, the impact of the market mechanism, in the process of the
formation and improvement of one’s character, a number of young people’s
perspectives on issues, how to solve issues, cultural values, ethical choices ... are
still one-sided and subjective. Young people are also sensitive and receptive to new
things, both to the positives and the negatives. Therefore, orientation and education
and particularly, aesthetic education, are essential for the youth. Through aesthetic

education, young people can understand the beauty of people and life, and learn the

2
appropriate behaviors and mannerism, to make the right choices and choose
meaningful values in life.
One of the mass media platforms that have had strong growth and a
tremendous influence on societal development, especially young people is
television. Television has shown a great role in modernizing society and
demonstrating "invisible power" in changing social relationships as well as the
ideologies, sentiments, attitudes, lifestyles of the youth. In addition to the
undeniable positive impact, the media in general and television in particular also
have had negative effects on the spiritual life of people, especially the aesthetic life
of the young generation. As a result, aesthetic education through mass media,
especially television, has become a matter not only of theoretical significance but
also of the urgent needs of today's reality.

OVERVIEW OF RESEARCH AND RELATED STUDIES
AND ISSUES FOR FURTHER RESEARCH
1.1. Research from foreign countries

5
Research on aesthetics in general and aesthetic education for young people
is a matter of deep concern by scholars and foreign aesthetic researchers. The
impact of globalization, cultural exchanges and advances has had a great impact on
all areas of social life including aesthetic life. These studies have approached
aesthetic education in general, and aesthetic education for youth through mass
media in particular.
The studies of foreign authors that are selected for the review have confirmed
the great role of aesthetics in general and aesthetic education in particular, as
aesthetics education give people the aesthetic beliefs, sentiments, ideals in one’s
life. Aesthetic education has the mission of enriching humanity, to appreciate
progress and feel the beauty of goodness and just. Some authors also discuss the
great role of mass media in the education of aesthetics because the nature of
aesthetic education through mass media is the process of propagating aesthetic
values and art forms.
Through the review of the work of foreign authors, the author of the thesis
found that foreign researchers have many ways of explaining issues concerning
aesthetic and aesthetic education, evaluate the role of art in aesthetic education and
affirm the place of aesthetic beauty in social life. Although aesthetics education has
not been studied directly through mass media, foreign scholars have provided
aesthetic knowledge as well as theoretical and methodological issues in the study of
aesthetic education today.
1.2. Research within the country
Based on the layout of the thesis, the author divides studies that are related to

the focus of thesis into three major groups:
1.2.1. Studies related to aesthetics education for Vietnamese youth today
Aesthetic education in general and aesthetic education for young people are
topics of interest to many aesthetic researchers. What researchers have in common
is the subject that needs aesthetic education: the youth. The studies analyze the
characteristics of youth, the role of aesthetic education for youth and the methods
and principles of aesthetic education for youth... In studies that are analyzed,
researchers have different approaches, different interpretations of aesthetic
education for young people. A researcher discussed aesthetic education in general,
aesthetic education for youth in particular, while another discussed aesthetics
education for young people with the formation of lifestyles, the formation of

6
character for young people ... The author has inherited the values, contributions of
the previous works on aesthetics education for young people as a theoretical basis,
methodology and basic research theories for aesthetic education in general and
aesthetic education for youth in particular.
1.2.2. Studies on the aesthetics education of the youth through mass media
Mass media plays an important role in modern socio-economic development.
The mass media is referred to as soft power, the soft power of nations. Nowadays,
many researchers are interested in mass media as tools and means of aesthetics
education for youth. The authors all affirmed that mass media has a strong influence
on the youth, manifested through "soft power" in all areas of social life including
aesthetic education. The authors pointed out both sides of mass media in aesthetics
education and have put forward some recommendations and solutions to enhance
the role of mass media in the education of young people today. Previous authors’
assessments of the double-sided impact of mass media on aesthetic education for
young people is of particular relevance to the author of this thesis.
1.3. Issues that require further study

1.3.1. Overall assessment of current research
There are a lot of studies within and outside the country that examined issues
related to the content of this thesis. An overall assessment of current research can be
summed up in the following key areas:
- Studies on aesthetic education for young people: The authors point out the
important role of aesthetic education for young people. Aesthetic education is an
important way to shape and develop the character of the younger generation. At
present days, the core content of aesthetic education such as aesthetic sense,
aesthetic taste, aesthetics ability, aesthetic value ... for young people should also be
evaluated, analyzed selectively and oriented.
- Studies on aesthetic education for young people through mass media:
Documents exploring the exact topic of the thesis are very limited. However, the
authors have also initially identified the role of communication in the aesthetic
education for youth. Based on analyzing the values and limitations of previous
authors, we selectively choose suitable values that serve our research in a
comprehensive and in-depth manner.
1.3.2. Contents that require further study
Based on the selective inheritance from results of published studies, the

7
thesis has chosen: "Aesthetic education for youth through mass media in our
country today", which continues to solve the following issues:
Firstly, theoretically, the thesis presents systematically and logically
theoretical issues on aesthetic education, aesthetic education for youth and aesthetic
education for youth through mass media in Vietnam today. Following footsteps of
the forerunners, the author of the thesis is able to inherit prior research on this issue,
however, in each specific content, the author also has its own analysis and
explanation.
Secondly, practically, the thesis focuses on the following issues:

- The thesis places the issue of aesthetic education in the new socioeconomic context that most of the previous authors have not examined. It is the
context of globalization in which different countries, regions and territories,
including Vietnam, participate in cultural exchanges. Moreover, in the present stage,
the mass media has developed very strongly and globally, creating the birth of the
"media age". Mass media not only has a great influence on the development of all
aspects of social life, but also becomes one of the means of aesthetics education. In
this respect, almost all of the previous topics have yet to explore, or only explore a
limited area. Therefore, this is one of the new features of the thesis, which will
contribute to affirming the necessity of diversifying forms of aesthetic education in
our country nowadays, especially the methods of modern education, a matter of
great concern of the whole society.
- The author of the thesis approach aesthetic education with young people as
the subject. This is a special age group with high aesthetic needs, always open to the
new and different, thus the education of aesthetics for youth through mass media is
a matter of theoretical and practical significance in today’s age.
Summary of Chapter 1
There are many studies within and outside the country that explored aesthetic
education for youth. These studies have reached the position, the role of the mass
media in general and the role of mass media in the aesthetics education for youth in
particular. Previous authors also analyzed the uniqueness and superiority of
communication in aesthetic education. In today's era, with the power of
propagation, the strong impact of the media has shown that this is one of the
resources and strength in education of the young generation. Mass media is a mean

8
of education in modern societies. The authors of the studies have identified two
aspects of communication in social development and educational development,
including aesthetic education.
Although studies that directly examined the thesis topic are very limited, we have

analyzed, evaluated and pointed out new points in research and detailed problem
solving. The process of document preparation, analysis and processing of
sociological survey data, clarification of relevant issues in research is an important
foundation in order to develop and implement the thesis.

Due to the impact of the market economy, some programs in mass media tend
to follow the trend of profitable, unfair competition, distancing away from the
principles and purpose of their activities. Some media rely too much on its
expressive form, tending to move from massification to personalization when
discussing the privacy of individuals, especially celebrities, using scandals as the
main topic. This has had a great impact on the education of young people. A number
of young people are more likely to be influenced by pragmatic lifestyles with an
overload of indulgences, valuing surface appearances, fame, glamor, easy choices
and opportunistic in personal life.
There are many television programs that are too lenient in stage costumes
policies, the use of language of actors, singers, presenters, models which heavily
affect the aesthetics of youth, influencing young people to follow shocking fashion
trends, language choices that go against cultural values. Vietnam television has a
increasing trend of commercialization. Its manifestation is the advent of a large

18
number o TV commercials, including those shown on the "golden hour". Repeated
advertising programs lead to boredom. Many advertising images are dishonest,
displaying vulgar content, habits that greatly impact on the education of young

people.
Vietnamese television also tends to be "foreign-oriented". The manifestation
of this trend is the emergence of many foreign copyright programs, especially
entertainment programs and feature films. The international cooperation on
television is an indispensable trend, however, this trend is somewhat excessive in
our country. That leads to the paradox that there is a portion of young Vietnamese
that prefer what is "foreign" to what is "domestic", preferring international music,
than traditional, national music; enjoying foreign films more than feature films in
Vietnam ...

television in particular.

Thirdly, the content of youth education through television is rich, diverse, with
new forms of expression that are suitable for young people.
3.3.2. Main reasons for the limitations
Firstly, due to the lax management and ineffectiveness of the State and media
agencies on television, the quality and effectiveness of many television programs
are still low.
Secondly, due to the trend of commercialization, some television programs fail
to follow their original purpose and principles, instead focusing only on economic
profit. The most obvious manifestations of this trend are the programs featuring
entertainment music, commercials, feature films ....

19
Thirdly, due to limited capacity of young people, barriers for young people to
choose and evaluate positive aspects as well as limitations of television in particular
and mass media in general. The youth receive information in a passive manner, and
are not immune to television’s negative aspects, thus leading to aesthetic deviations.
3.4. A number of issues raised for aesthetic education for the youth
through mass media today
Firstly, the contradictions between the increasing developmental rate of mass
media as well as television with the capacity of the State administration for the mass
media in our country today.
Secondly, the contradictions between the need to improve the effectiveness of
aesthetic education for young people through mass media and the remaining
limitations of our social status quo.

mass media as well as television in aesthetic education for young people.
Fourthly, the contradictions between traditional and modern values are
reflected in the mass media in the aesthetic education for our youth.

Mass media not only helps young people develop a rich cultural life, a healthy
spirit, release stress but also contribute to improving the life and aesthetic value for
the youth. These advantages are due to the right orientation of the Party, of the
youth television agencies, the youth work as well as the enhancement of the
responsibility of the mass media in the education of aesthetics, lifestyle for youth;
Due to the increasing popularity of television with young people ...
Besides the advantages in educating aesthetics for youth, the mass media also
has some unbalanced and distorted restrictions in its programs and contents;
Broadcasting too many commercialized programs, preferring "foreign-oriented"

contents which lead to deviations in behavior and direction in life, The limitations
stem from the lax and ineffective management of the State and the media, from the
increasingly commercialized trend of mass media, from the limited aesthetic ability
of young people.

CONCLUSION
Aesthetic education is one of the basic and important educational contents for
everybody, especially young people - the age group with an abundance in health and
knowledge, with many dreams, ambition and ideals but also a vulnerable stage
where one is susceptible to choosing the wrong paths in life. With the policy of
comprehensive development of people, especially young people - the future owners

of the nation , in recent years, the Party and State have paid great attention to the
comprehensive education, such as the intellectual, ethical, lifestyles, aesthetics
education... It is the right policy that is consistent with the development trend of the
present day.
Today, the media platforms have had constant changes. In recent years, mass
media has had many positive aspects in educating aesthetics for young people such
as building up good feelings for nature and people; raising the sense of
responsibility and spirit for the social community for the youth; helping young
people to correctly identify their directions in life, to learn how to live for
themselves and their families, society, and have a diverse, wholesome personal
lifestyle. The positive aspects are the Party's proper direction on the development of
the mass media, contributing to the improvement of the life of the youth,
establishing the right direction for the comprehensive personal development of
people and the increasing attraction of mass media to the youth of our country. In
addition, the media also has certain limitations in educating aesthetics for youth.
The underlying cause of these limitations is the poor management of the State and
other regulators in the development of the mass media; due to the trend of
commercialization becomes more and more dominant in the mass media; due to the
generally low aesthetic qualities of young people in our country.
In order to improve the efficiency of the mass media in educating the
aesthetics of our youth in the coming time, it is necessary to continue to enhance the
leadership of the Party, strengthen the management of the State with the influence
of mass media with aesthetic education for youth; to raise the aesthetic capacity of
youths through schools, families and socio-political organizations; In particular, the
youth themselves have to constantly learn to equip themselves with aesthetic
knowledge, actively training, living and studying, working according to the right
values and for a greater purpose.
