“SOME GAMES TO HELP PRIMARY STUDENTS LEARN
ENGLISH WELL”
I. REASONS CHOOSE THE TOPIC
1a. Question:
Magnitude of the problem:
* Position of English subject in primary school:
Primary education is an important level that contributes to laying the foundations
for the formation and development of student's personality. Primary school English as
well as other subjects provide initial knowledge and awareness of the use of foreign
languages.
Primary school English is an independent subject, taking up a lot of time in the
curriculum of students. Because the subject of the subject is unlike other subjects
outside of class time, children cannot receive any tutoring or help from the family.
Especially in our rural areas, most parents have very little knowledge of English.
English is of great importance in the country's current renovation period, in the
trend of globalization, the whole world is a common home. Therefore, English is a
general communication language subject and is considered to be an international
language. In Vietnam, in recent years, English has also been started in the primary
school curriculum, so it needs to have simple words, close, suitable for students'
cognitive activities.
English also has a great educational ability to cultivate perseverance and
memorization, from the thinking manipulations necessary for approaching and forming
new languages.
* Psychological characteristics of elementary school students:
- At the elementary age, students' bodies are in the period of change or in particular,
incomplete organ systems. Therefore, the flexibility of the body is still low, so they can
not make a long monotonous movement, easy to make students unable to focus and do
not want to learn.
- Elementary students are very excited and like to interact with an object, a certain

phenomenon, especially images that cause strong emotions.
- Elementary students are often active, curious about new things, and then quickly
bored again. Therefore, in teaching teachers, they have to use many teaching aids,
enhance practice, organize alternating games ... to deepen their knowledge.
Rationale:
Derived from the purpose, requirements and based on the theoretical basis of teaching learning subjects
Primary English and foreign languages in the general education environment,
stipulating essential contents on education, ideology, ethics, cultivating cultural
knowledge and training communication skills. in English. These aspects of content are
closely related, so that through the game-based teaching activities, each student will
have good communication skills in English, good communication through the topics of
each lesson. . Such relationships of content with each other are the characteristics of
English subject that teachers and learners need to be aware of throughout the course of
taking over the subject.
1

2

Practical basis:
- Take time, exchange ideas with colleagues about the content of the game to apply in
English teaching hours in elementary school.
- Summarizing and drawing experience in the teaching process.
- Organize and conduct experimental teaching, prepare lesson plans to test the
feasibility of the topic through lessons.
1b. Purpose of the topic:
In order to contribute to innovating the teaching method of primary English
subjects in the direction of promoting students' activeness and creativity, enhancing
individual activities in coordination with learning exchange. Establish and train skills to
apply knowledge into the implementation of communication process.

Creating interest in learning English for students, a subject that is considered new
and difficult, the introduction of communication games to apply English words learned
in the game, in order for the I am not bored with the new subject, I feel like playing and
playing. Games during class not only help them acquire knowledge and words but also
help them consolidate and deepen their knowledge.
1 C. Topic history:
In the integration trend of our country and the current primary education program,
English and other subjects in elementary schools play an important role in creating
comprehensive development people, Meet the requirements of the country in the new
period.
For primary school students to learn English well, every English teacher does not
only have to communicate and explain according to the materials available in textbooks,
manuals, and lesson plans. Stereotypes and machines make students passive learning. If
only such teaching is provided, the student's study will be monotonous and tedious and
the learning results will not be effective. It is one of the causes that hinder the formation
of young people into active, confident, creative people who are ready to adapt to the
innovations that take place every day.
In recent years, the current requirements of education require innovation in teaching
methods at all subjects and levels, in order to improve the quality of teaching and
learning. Therefore, the English subject in general and the English subject in elementary
school in particular need to have stronger and stronger innovations, promote students'
positive and proactive creativity. . Therefore, teachers must inspire their learning by
engaging them in learning activities. The game has rich content, uses interesting and
useful language to suit their perception. Through the games, they will acquire
knowledge and ability to use language in communication easily, consolidate and
inculcate knowledge firmly, giving them passion and excitement. in studying, in
employment. When we offer games in English lessons on a regular and scientific basis,
the quality of teaching English will certainly increase. It is for these reasons that I have
chosen the theme of the initiative "Some games to help elementary school students learn
English well". This is a very new topic.

1d. Topic scope:
This initiative comes from the fact that students are not passionate about English
classes. Because English is a foreign language, not a native language. Moreover,
2

3

through many years of teaching experience shows that students often make fearful
gestures and act bored of learning English.
Research subjects: Students in grades 2/1 and 2/2 of the 2017-2018 school year of the
elementary school ....
- Textbooks, manuals, reference books, game materials, tapes, paintings, photos,
puppets, CDs, radio, projectors, computers, etc.

2b. The content needs solving
Before putting games into the experimental curriculum, I conducted a student's initial
quality survey as a reference. After finishing lesson 1 "Let's Talk", I chose grade 2 with
57 students, as follows: 2/1 class with 28 students and 2/2 class with 29 students to do
The survey is as follows.
* Survey of experimental teaching quality:
Question 1: Check the words you here (Choose the words you hear)
1.  fine
 hi
2  name

3  thank
 thanks

* At the same time, after taking this survey, I conducted a survey to investigate students'
interest in learning:
+ Question: Do you like doing exercises like above?
Please check the box
 like  don't like  hesitate
* The following comments check:
Based on the results of the survey, I found that: Most students are not interested in
learning because of the specific characteristics of the subject other than going to school
and leaving home, they cannot learn by themselves. Besides, this is a new subject, the
first time they have access to and become familiar with a new language so it is very
difficult for them not to be passionate about learning a new language. They feel very
bored when they study this subject.
2 C. Solution :

Play activity is the activity whose motivation is in the process of the game itself,
not in the outcome of the game.
Games are a common type of play, are played by the rules, the rules of the game are
the rules that define the purpose, results and requirements of the game action, the rules
of the game must be clear.
A learning game is a game whose rules include rules attached to the lesson content,
helping students harness their own experience to play. Through play, students can apply
the knowledge and skills they learned in the situation of the game. Therefore, students
can practice strengthening, expand knowledge and skills they have learned. As such, the
study skills of English are incorporated into the game.
It can be said: Play is a necessary need for students in elementary school, it is
important as eating, sleeping, studying in their lives. That's why they always find ways
and take advantage of time in all conditions to play. Being able to play, they will
participate in a very self-conscious and proactive manner, when playing, they will show
affection very clearly, like the joy of winning and sadness of failure. Glad to see the
teammates complete the mission, the students themselves feel guilty for not doing their
tasks well. Because of the collective, they overcome difficulties and strive to the best of
their ability to bring victory to their own groups and groups. This is the very high

emulation characteristic of the games, students often use their full strength, focus
attention, intelligence and creativity.
Learning games change the form of students' activities, helping students acquire
knowledge in a self-conscious and positive way.
Help students train, consolidate knowledge and develop experience gained through
play. Learning games train skills, techniques, promote intellectual activities, thanks to
the use of learning games, the teaching process becomes a fun activity but still more

attractive, more diverse opportunities for activities. ,
The game is not only a medium but also an educational method.
* Some games in English lessons in elementary school:
* Organize games during class hours:
In order for games to be highly effective during class time, when organizing and
designing games, the following principles must be ensured:
@ Game design in English lessons:
Organizing learning games to teach English in general and elementary English in
particular, we must rely on the lesson content, time conditions in each specific lesson to
make the games suitable. well suited . If you want to organize games in teaching
English effectively, every English teacher must have a careful, thorough preparation
plan and ensure the following requirements:
+ The game has an educational meaning.
+ The game must aim to strengthen and inculcate lesson content.
+ The game must be suitable to the mentality, the student's level, the ability of the
instructor and the school's facilities.
+ The form of the game must be rich and varied and must be well prepared and
meticulous.
+ The game must create excitement and passion for learning for students
@ The structure of learning games
+ Name of the game.
+ Purpose of the game.
State the purpose of review and consolidation of knowledge and skills.
The purpose of the game dictates the play action designed within the game.
+ Game supplies: Describe game equipment used in learning games.
+ The rules of the game: should state the rules of the game, specify the rules of the
game that are prescribed for the players, the rules of the game.
+ Number of players: Need to specify the number of participants in each game.
+ How to play: Stating clearly, specifically and simply of each game.
@ How to organize games:

- How to play: First, introduce the game: Name the game, guide how to play by both
describing and practicing and stating the rules of play.
- Play try to guide and emphasize the rules of the game.
- Conduct real play: Students participate in the game and teachers become referees.
- Commenting on the results of the game, the attitude of the attendees, the teacher can
add knowledge learned through the game and mistakes to avoid.
5

6

- End of the game: Rewarding and distracting game rules so that the player accepts
comfortably and voluntarily makes the game more attractive and stimulating learning
for students. Penalize students who violate the rules of the game with simple but fun
methods such as clapping, jumping, singing a song, or greeting the winners ...
@ Introducing some games to learn English in primary school
Here, I would like to introduce some typical games that I have applied in the
teaching process for elementary school students.
Game 1: Slap blackboard (Smash the board):
- Purpose:
+ Practice reading and consolidating skills to listen back to learned words and face
recognition.
+ Practice quick reflexes in the children.
- Preparation: No need to prepare any utensils.
- How to play: The whole class sits in place. Teacher introduces the game name and
draws a number of different shapes on the board: circle, triangle, square, rectangle,
diamond, ellipse, etc. then record some new words just learned in the pictures above.
The teacher gives you the procession that he will read all ... words. Students stand in
front of the board, listen to the teacher reading and quickly tap on the word.

- Game rules: Play in pairs, the teacher divides the class into two teams and names each
team, one after another for each team to play against the other team's friends. The two of
you stood in front of the board at a certain distance and listened to the teacher reading
and then quickly slapped the word the teacher had just read on the board. Continue with
the other pair, ending with the number of words the teacher said before reading.
- At the end of the game: The team that scores more points wins the team, the winner
will receive a round of applause.
* Note: This game can also send a good friend to read any words that have just been
written on the board for you to hear and identify and slap the picture with the words you
have read.
Game 2: Lucky number (Lucky number):
- Purpose: Create an exciting, focused atmosphere in class.
- Preparation: Teachers prepare a number of questions, answers that stick to the lesson
content and do not need to prepare any supplies.
- How to play: The teacher draws a board of 15 squares and writes down any 15 natural
numbers, which corresponds to those 12 questions that students have to answer, and 3
sentences with 3 numbers. Lucky called Lucky number. Every lucky number is every 10
points and there are no questions.
- Game rules: The teacher divides the class into 2 teams and names, each team sends a
team leader to jail to see who gets the right to choose first and in the group to discuss
deciding which number to choose, if you choose to answer a question, the teacher will
read the question and the whole group has to discuss and find the answer for the group
leader to read and answer correctly and get 10 points; If the wrong team is answered. In
turn 2 to the other team select the box, if selected on the lucky box, there is no need to
answer the question; Clap and congratulate and get lucky score of 10 points.
- End of the game: The team that scores more points wins that team, when the team
selects the Lucky number box will be given a round of applause.
6

7

* Note: You can change to increase the competition, create an exciting atmosphere by
specifying points, 12 out of 15 plots have 5 points, 2 plots have 10 points and one
special area gets 20 points. .
Game 3: Hangman (Hangman)
3

4

5

7

6

8

- Purpose: Create an atmosphere of excitement and enthusiasm for learning to help
students review and test their vocabulary.
- Preparation: No need to prepare any utensils.
- How to play :
General steps:
The teacher suggests the number of words to guess by the number of dashes on the
board.
For example: CINEMA
Ask students to guess with the words in the word.
If the students guess incorrectly, the teacher draws 1 brick (according to the order in the
picture)
If the student guesses wrong 8 times then loses, the teacher answers the word.

According to the general implementation steps as above, this game has no competition
between the two teams. Therefore, during the implementation, most of the teachers have
modified a bit to increase the appeal for the game. For example, the teacher could divide
the class into 2 teams and the teacher would prepare 2 different word groups for the 2
teams, the team with the more answers would win that team. Alternatively, the teacher
could divide the class into 4 teams, giving the teams a choice of words and puzzles
(team 1 on team 2; team 2 on team 3; team 3 on team 4; team 4 on team 1)
Having students fill the game themselves is also a way to increase student autonomy
while reducing the workload for teachers in the classroom.
7

8

Divide the class into 2 or 3 teams and label each team under the gallows that the teacher
drew on the board. What is the topic topic for the teacher today? Tell students to look
for a 5-letter word, and then have one volunteer go to the board to write down the word
and read it aloud to the class.
Continuing the second series, each team chooses a volunteer to write on the board
the word they find according to the number of letters the teacher asks.
- Game rules: Must find the right word with the right number of letters and write the
correct spelling, which team will be written a stroke on the gallows of their team, if the
wrong team in 8 times is lost. Or the losing team is the team that has completed a
completed human formation on the gallows first.
- Finish the game: Give a round of applause to congratulate the winning team.
* Note: Each team has no stroke on every team.
Game 4: Bingo (Bingo)
- Purpose: To consolidate, inculcate knowledge, attract students to study passionately.
- Preparation: No need to prepare utensils.
- How to play: Play checkered style. The teacher draws on the board 16 or 20 squares,

consisting of 4 vertical and 5 horizontal boxes and the teacher fills in any 20 numbers,
of which 20 have the corresponding 20 questions defined according to the lesson
content. , divided into 2 teams and regulations that team A marks X, team B marks O.
First, each team nominates a team leader to select the number of teachers. The number
of teachers will mark that team in the box and read the questions in each box for the
other team to answer. In the end, the team that selects the box in which their 3 symbols
are lined up and shouts loudly is Bingo.
- Finish the game: Give a round of applause to congratulate the winning team.
Game 5: Transmit electricity

electricity. Just do that if you say anything wrong, you must hop hop around the class.
- Finish the game: Praise and reward a round of applause for those who are right and
fast.
* Note: The teacher must distinguish and analyze the correct word for the student first
(whether it be nouns, verbs or adjectives, etc.) for the good, good class and the average

sophisticated but still creates a fun, exciting and exciting atmosphere in the lessons for
children.

- End of the game: Commend those who answered correctly and quickly. Teachers
comment on mistakes made by students.
@ Process of experimental teaching:
Based on the results of this multiple-choice test, I see difficulties and limitations in
teaching the lesson. Therefore, I have researched and found new ways to teach
elementary school students and have set up three basic goals:
* First: Help students understand and remember them quickly.
* Second: Creating excitement for students who are passionate about learning and
highly focused during class.
* Tuesday: Students learn to be proactive, creative and have the opportunity to practice
many, often.
+ The following is the content and usage of some games in each lesson.
Teaching English to elementary students is to teach them to get used to using a new
language. Therefore, we must create for them the passion and interest in learning.
In order to do this, it is necessary to simplify all the contents to suit the young age,
giving them a learning atmosphere that is lively, fun and excited to be creative. Thereby,
the children can learn to play, play but learn Therefore, we must apply and integrate
games into the lessons and in the teaching process, depending on the content of the
lesson, we must choose the game. accordingly.
2d. Results and changes of the object:
After a period of experimental teaching "Learning English through games" I saw
the quality and effectiveness of my English teaching hours increased significantly.
Students are transferred to a very lively practice, exciting class time, learning
10

atmosphere no longer as dull as before. Students are excited about learning and their
knowledge is deeply embedded.
Experimental teaching results are also assessed through students' quality tests and
learning interests.

After choosing to apply some of the above-mentioned games to the lesson. At the end of
the lesson, I found that not only did the students grasp the lesson knowledge, but they
also remembered it for a long time. They train their ability to be agile, skillful and make
them brave and more confident.
The good news is that the children are excited to learn, waiting for the lesson for
them to love and love English.
III. CONCLUDE
3a. Solution summary:
Learning games are a type of fun activity that has a lot of effect during the school
hours of elementary school students. Learning games create a joyful, innocent and
lively atmosphere during class. It also stimulates imagination, curiosity, curiosity in
students. Well-organized learning games not only make them more interested in
learning, but also help them become more confident. Have the opportunity to assert
themselves and evaluate each other in learning.

Organizing games during English lessons is essential. After that, you should not
overdo this method, you should only organize 1 - 2 - 3 games for children every 5 - 7
11

12

minutes. Therefore, teachers need organizational skills, guide them to play reasonably
and synchronously, maximize the role of students.
When organizing learning games in general and English subjects in elementary
schools in particular, we need to rely on the content of the lesson, the school's physical
condition and the time in each lesson to choose. or design a suitable game.
Done to organize a number of effective games requires each teacher to plan and
prepare each game well.
3b. Scope and subjects of application:
- Apply very effectively and very effectively to all students who have learned English
from grade 2 at Inner Primary Primary School and can replicate to all grades 2, 3, 4, 5
of the school Vien Noi Primary School and primary school English classes in other
schools in the Districts.
3c. Propose to the authorities about implementation conditions
Here are some of my little ideas about integrating games into English class in 2nd
grade of Hanoi Elementary School for the 2017-2018 school year and achieving
remarkable results. It is also my personal subjective opinion so I cannot avoid the
limitations. I look forward to the comments, exchanges from comrades, colleagues and
experts to myself more and more progressive, more complete and the most effective
topic contributing to the cause of education. Education and training of young, multilanguage foreign languages come close to them, penetrate into life and become an
effective and effective communication tool. Thereby, accumulated more teaching
experience and the art of teaching achieve the highest results that meet the educational
requirements in the current period. It is reasonable that we have implemented the socalled "General Technical Education, training but comprehensive, useful people for
society".

Sincere thanks for the comments of the scientific council and all teachers. Good
health and success.
