ABSTRACT

Nowadays, in the digital era along with the quickly global integration of most
of the countries all over the world, there are many entrepreneurs do their
international business in others countries. Viet Nam with many largely potential
factors which meet the requirement as politic, peace, kind people, good climate…
However, one of the most vital elements attract foreigners to come here is the active
and good human resources.
Moreover, as this development there is the extremely big need of using
English - the global language is bigger and bigger. Especially, the international
companies were founded in Viet Nam, the need of firms about English skills of
human resources is increasingly high besides their working skills.

As the requirement of society, Thuongmai University’s seniors have gradually
taken the proper awareness of English values at international work placement.
Hence, they plan their learning English schedule to adapt mostly the common needs
from all countries.
That is the reason why I would like to give this study to discover the
difficulties of Thuongmai University’s seniors in the use of English at international
work placement as well as some proposed solutions which help them get the precise
look to work internationally professional.

CHAPTER I: OVERVIEW OF STUDY

1. Rationale
English language is known as the global language and is used in most of all
countries all over the world. As the statistic of Widipedia, English existed over
1.400 years ago and had been through a long period of time to become the current
English. With a huge time of use, English lasts and exists in a lot of countries
namely England, The British, The United State, Canada, Ireland, … Other than that,
there were from 360 to 400 million people speaking English as the primary
language, 400 million people speaking English as the second language and 600 –

700 million people learning it as a necessary language in 2006.
Nowadays, there are 54 countries us English as the mother tongue, as the
primary language in their countries, 27 non-sovereignty countries and a huge
amount of other organizations globally.
The world is separately at this moment as well as the riot and uncertainty is
happening in many countries being the reasons why Viet Nam is the great
destination for all businessmen in the world as the potential country.
Other than that, go along with the global integration Viet Nam also has built
the infrastructure, the huge buildings, improvement of health, life quality… by
itself. With all the freedom, independence, happiness of citizen with the stable
politics, attractive culture, huge sources, rich materials and a potential development
Viet Nam is going to be a promising destination for sure in the near future.
With all the great benefits which attracts all the good customers and investors
to come in Viet Nam. Because of all, Viet Nam integrates with the development of
the world. Nowadays, there are many investors come to Viet Nam and do their
business in Viet Nam, so that they create office and also attract the Vietnamese
employees to work for them who know deeply about Vietnamese life and culture
along with help foreigners adapting with this country.
2. Overview of the study issue
In domestic:

In Viet Nam, we have been integrating globally, and there is a potential and
promising country for local businessmen and foreign investors. Viet Nam has the
suitable conditions namely climate, friendly people, stable politics, cheap and huge
human resources and many openly helpful policies for international countries and
investors. As the website: vneconomy.vn, the international investors did a business
with over 30.8 billion USD in Viet Nam on November of 2018 from buying shares,

registration of total FDI funding, increasing and making a financial contribution to
the companies in Viet Nam, it was equal to 93.2% compared with the same period
in 2017, according to Ministry of Planning and Investment and Foreign Investment
Department.
20/11/2018, Viet Nam had approximately 2.714 new plans certified the
investing registration of certificate with the new registration of 15.78 billion USD in
total, equal to 79.7% compared with the same period in 2017. Besides that, there
were investment and share purchase of 7.6 billion USD in total. Export of raw oil in
foreign investment area reached 160.3 billion USD, increasingly 13.4 % in 2017
and got 71.7 % the export revenue of Viet Nam.
The import reached USD 130.1billion, rose 12.3% in 2017 and held 60% the
Viet Nam import revenue in total.
As the research of Vneconomy.vn, there are 108 international countries and
areas investing in 59 provinces and cities of Viet Nam while Ha Noi Capital
attracted the biggest amount of investment with funding registration of 6.3 billion
USD in total, equal to 20.4%. The second position was Ho Chi Minh City with the
total revenue of registration 5.6 billion USD equal to 18.1%. And the third one was
Hai Phong city of 2.49 billion USD, equal to 8% of the total Vietnam revenue.
In Thuong Mai University:
Thuongmai University was founded in 1960 and was the public university of
Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, and had the first name: Central Commercial
School. To get through all the hard periods of time with the history of Viet Nam as
well as the history of itself and many times renamed, this current name is
Thuongmai University. At the moment, TMU has 2 branches, the first and central
one is located in 79 Ho Tung Mau, Cau Giay district, Ha Noi and the other is

located in Ha Nam, Ha Noi. As Wikipedia, it is said on the standard background of

Ministry of Education and Training assessment that TMU (Thuongmai University)
is the place lying on top 5 universities which is the best specializing in Business,
Accounting, Audit, Managing and Business Administration in Viet Nam.
As its ability, TMU also catches the new trend of era with the long and
profound background. TMU always takes in consideration how to improve the
facilities, materials, teaching quality and opportunities and chances for students,
help them have the best condition when they study here.
The university staff of 588 people is enthusiastic, responsible and creative
with the great profound knowledge and experience, namely 3 professors, 46
associate professors, 61 doctors, 409 masters and 69 visiting professors and
associate professors. Most of them being Thuongmai University employees have
been going abroad for studying and doing research in the lands and countries:
Russia, England, India, France, German, Japan, China, The United State, Taiwan,
Thailand, Indonesia, Switzerland, Australia.
Besides that, TMU founded the a lot of centers which are on purpose of
student’s skill development as The Smartlearn center of English Faculty (educating
English), The CILA center of International Training Faculty ( educating of English,
French, Chinese), The commercial science magazine (both Vietnamese and English)
of Thuongmai University.
To run in the global world and fast development of life, Thuongmai University
also has planned to educate the students how to adapt with the job requirements
from material facilities to academic courses and practical working environment.
To keep up with the development of the world, Thuongmai University opened
a huge of faculties to be in need of international work placement. Especially, they
are namely Chinese Faculty, French Faculty, International business studies,
International studies and international business management. However, it is
recommended as the most important and popular background at work placement is
English and that is the reason why TMU opened English Faculty which had been
focusing on English in Business and aiming to improve the English skills of all
Thuongmai University’s students. Moreover, with the good background, knowledge

and skills, the students coming from TMU will be the excellent human resource to
the internationally environmental business.
Nowadays, many foreign Universities and companies would like to connect
with Viet Nam Universities, including TMU, and have more attractive opportunities
to Vietnamese students, especially, they are seniors.
Seniors in all University are the active, decisive, hard-working employees and they
also quickly integrate with the position and the work. Seniors are young human resources
and they are ambitious and motivated who will bring the country to go further.
TMU’s seniors are in that position, with the open gate of Viet Nam will find
the big and new chances in the international companies for their life. However, with
many difference and difficulties and the different cultures and especially, there is
language – English as in this study I would like to recommend
With the potential chances and open market, English – the global language is
extremely important, it is the reason why I would like to do a study of TMU’s senior
in the use of English at international work environment.
3. Aims of the study
In this thesis, I would like to give an exact overview of international working
environment in the use of English, the English skills of students in general and
TMU’s seniors in particular.
Especially, the main content of my thesis I would like to introduce the
difficulties of TMU’s seniors and give some proposed solutions for this issue in
improving and helping to do their glamorous career.
4. Scope of the study
4.1. Object
There are an object shown the scope of the study what we are focusing on
currently. It is said as the difficulties of TMU’s seniors in the use of English at the

international work placement.

situations of Thuongmai University’s 4-year students when they have been at the
work placement.
5. Research methodology
5.1. Theory
We use all the theories involved in English and the values of it in use and put it
in action. The theories of senior situations and the way they use English and do a
research in the studies and documents which are essential to the topic followed.
As known, the success of the career which depends on focus factors such as
professional at work, the big tries of each individuals, knowledge, experiences as well as
English if they intend to take part in the international working environment at this point
and in coming years. Thus, English plays an essential role in achieving success of
personal career and the future job dream of each Thuongmai University’s senior.
5.2. Reality
A direct movement to the companies to do researches, investigation, analysis
and assessment to complete your research well, furthermore, to do this research
completely, it is irreplaceable the great values of participants who are Thuongmai
University’s seniors. The methods to do are face – to – face questionnaires and polls
directly and via the internet.

CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE VIEW
1. Definition of international work placement
1.1. The definition of domestic working environment
The domestic working environment is known as the environment which is
used Vietnamese and has all of the Vietnamese employees in the company. The
domestic work placement means Vietnamese work placement in this study where
local people work together and have no foreigners in this atmosphere. There are
also the places using Vietnamese in all cases on working and have no connection or
international business with the others countries.
Most of huge companies and groups have the connection and on trading with
at least one partner in another country, so that the language is used popularly in
reality of business is English. Nevertheless, all the staff in firms as them that they
have to know English or with the basic level at least.
On the contrary, with the domestic firms, they usually do not have the
connection with foreign partners or do the international business so that they do not
need to use English mostly and it is unnecessary to hire the staffs who know
English. Those kinds of companies will contract and do business in the medium or
small business inside Viet Nam. Moreover, the potential customers and the amount
of consumptions of those companies are from Vietnamese people.
The domestic working placement usually focuses on the small or in the local

areas as in villages, in the mountain places and islands where nearly all of them are
Vietnamese.
We can give some easy examples of the domestic country business are the
small clothes shops in small villages, the eateries at small corner near to local
schools or the medium factories are on purpose serving to the needs of citizens… In
addition, most of them don’t have any import or export operation and the need of
doing international business so that English has no need in this business status.
1.2. The definition of international environment
Unfamiliarly as the domestic working environment, the international work
placement is in search of incredible opportunities from outside. It is known that the
foreign trading extremely needs English language when their aims put on the other

countries, not just only inside. As we knew that between two countries when they
want to do business together, for sure that they can use their native languages.
However, if there are three nations, three partners or even more, we have on the
second thought that they must have the common languages to contact and work
with their partners. And naturally, English will be given to use as the third language
to communicate with each other.
Basically, English is more popular and easier language for non-native English
learners than other languages. What’s more, English was known as the global
language which was more than 54 countries, 27 territories and many organizations
used English as the national language (according to Wikipedia, statistics in 2006).
Also according to that statistics, the amount of English speakers reached to from
360 to 400 million native English speakers. Besides that,the people who speak in
English as the second language was 400 million people and especially, there were
from 600 – 700 million people using English as being necessary in 2006.
With the free market and Vietnamese policy, it is easier for all firms in Viet
Nam to get more and more potential opportunities on their trading. All the

entrepreneurs come in reality that there are the big benefits and business outside and
they can get more investments, customers and markets from valued countries than still
standing at the only one place in our nation. To get this, the important backgrounds are
employees and profound business at first. The question was given that what would happen
if you had done withone of the biggest potential investors - with an American (for
example) partner of your businessyou might have without staff knowing English at all and
make a comparison with most of them can speak English.
The international environment is more and more difficult than the national
place. There are a lot of different things that will show us how they are. Firstly, at
the international environment you have to work with foreigners and naturally,
English is the forced request or even the basic English at least. Secondly, the foreign
colleagues and Vietnamese people work together in a company need to use one
language to communicate. It is not mentioned that just only English or American –
native speakers who speak English, there are people from other countries namely
India, Republic of Korea, Thailand, China… all over the world work together.
Because of that, English is a smart tool to connect all.

1.3. The value of study at the international work placement
1.3.1. The need of study
• The value of English at work
We are mentioning the value of English at international work where they have
to connect with the foreign investors and customers, in some places they also have
to directly work with their foreign colleagues. In many situations, body language is
extremely helpful to our conversations in a small group of people. However, in a
professional working environment we will not able to use body language as the
communicating tool so that the English skill and levels are increasingly high and
they are gradually becoming the must – have knowledge and skills of staff.

By speaking English ability, many employees can easily find their dream job
or the suitable position for themselves and take the new challenges in their life with
the outside working environment. One of the impossible lacks of the situation when
staff get the job in the international work placement is to take more profits namely
high salary, getting more chance for the work, having knowledge and skills with the
strangely new atmosphere and new position, especially it is really helpful to the
students are on the learning process at University.
The main aim of University process is to find a good job, maybe some people
would plain to be self-employed, some would like to work hard and promote
themselves. In other word, others would like to challenge, be through and also get
the new position.
On the other hand, the gate of global business is largely opening for all people
to take the investment and the potential chances and dream jobs those are the
reasons why it is said that English skill is the new door of life and when you have
the English ability you will live the second life.
The benefits when foreign investors, foreign firms, or even the speaking
English colleagues get to be a huge promotion of life increasingly. It is mentioned
as the big potential chances are from The United State, China, Korea, Japan, EU
areas and some potential countries where you forcedly must speak English or any of
their mother tongue.

When the big group is planning to extend their business via doing the
international trading, naturally, they have the main and the most potential partners,
but, besides that, they need other partners as the other plans and solutions. So that,
in the mixture of many countries’ working environment if you do not know the
language of the main partners in your company, at least and the most useful way is
you know about English.

Moreover, in the global integration, English is known as the most common
and useful in the world where all products are putting on openly and are shown for a
big part of the world. Nowadays, very small amount of companies just only put the
target in the domestic environment, most of them would like to put all their aims
into action with the global connection and international free market and English is
the best tool which plays a vital role to the life of company when it is essential to all
of departments of a firm: marketing department, human resources, management
position when introducing the products to foreigners or attract all the investors.
• The TMU senior’s position
As Dantri.com with the newspaper with the title “at the first time given the
notification of 49 universities ranking in Viet Nam” in 2017, a research of many
independent experts was shown that Thuongmai University was the university
having the position number of 29 in the amount of 49 universities on top of Viet
Nam. The criteria of this research were given as the scientific research held 40
percentage of assessment, the training education got 40% and finally, the materials
and management ability got 20 percentage of all the assessment. This research was
the big achievement of hard working Vietnamese masters and doctors who worked
and studied at famous domestic and international universities of Viet Nam and over
the world namely Doctor Luu Quang Hung, Melbourne Australia; Doctor Nguyen
Ngoc Anh, Depocen, Viet Nam; Doctor Giap Van Duong, Giap Group, Viet Nam;
Doctor Ngo Duc The, Manchester, England; Master Tran Thanh Thuy Depocen,
Viet Nam; Master Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen, Education University of Ho Chi Minh
city, Viet Nam. Besides that, the scientists took part in as the consultants and
supported to the project were the Professor Tran Nam Binh, New South Wales
University, Australia; Professor Le Van Cuong, Paris 1 University, France.

Thuongmai University of Viet Nam is also assessed to hold the position

number 5 in the amount of Economic, Management and Business training
Universities in Viet Nam as Toplist.vn shared.
As the results of good education and background from Thuongmai University,
Thuongmai University’s students put themselves into the good way and take the
good knowledge, experience and skills from when they are on learning process. It
cannot be denied that most of all Thuongmai University’s students are creative,
hands-on, ambitious and specially, hard-working. Nowadays, in the free market, the
society and a lot of companies recognized the ability and level of the staff who have
the education background at Thuongmai University.
Since long time ago, all of Doctors, Masters, Professors and lectures of
Thuongmai University have been realizing that the training process for all students
have to depend on the common needs of most of all companies from those they will
be able to create the courses and found the centers of training education to make
their students meet demands of the positions in the market and be the good and
potential human resources for most of firms.
The care of Thuongmai University mostly focuses on the seniors. There are
many reasons of this action, the seniors – a so-called four-year students, nearly are
the important part of society and business, they also are the need of market when all
the companies in Viet Nam, both domestic and international business, are lack of
good human resources. Because of that, the confusion of Thuongmai University are
increasingly and wish how to train all the students to be the needy human resource
of market and meet the demand of difficult market.
At the point of this study, it is mentioned strongly that all the Thuongmai
University’s seniors who work and meet the international working environment and
over than that, there are the difficulties of Thuongmai University’s seniors in the use
of English in global work placement where the free market is gradually becoming
the core of business all over the world.
To be honest, although English is the global language many students in
faculties here cannot speak English or even if it is possible, there is just the basic
level and will not be able to meet the needs of companies. This study is going to

show some of the difficulties in reality at international working environment and
would like to push the seniors out and awake. They need to come in reality where
the status and position they are standing and from that awareness they can adjust
how to meet the English needs of international firms.
English is extremely important and it is as the key of successful people when
they tend to filter into the economy and do the business beside the social skills, the
knowledge, experiences and even the luck in business and at work.
The international work placement is in variety of different circumstances and
environments, so that Thuongmai University’s seniors need to be flexible and agile,
simultaneously creative and hard – working, especially in the use of English and
putting it into action.
The difficulties of English use on this study also show that how important and
essential English is at working both advantages and disadvantages. However, it is
mentioned the disadvantages and the difficulties of Thuongmai University’s seniors
when they use this in real communicating situations and professional international
environment. From all of them, this study would like to bring a real overview and
awareness of the position and the world they are standing now and in the near
future.
This study is familiarly the key to open the new doors and horizons for the
seniors and students, especially, if they are on the road to find their suitable steps
and positions in the coming years. They are in need of awake themselves up, realize
who they are and the important position of English using at work…
1.3.2. The difference between the domestic and international work
placement of internship as the seniors of Thuongmai university
There are big differences between interning and working abroad and locally.
With pros and cons of both it is said that all of the interns and fresh graduates have

to have the precise look to their own decision for picking up the local working
environment or international one
a. Way of working
Working in a foreign company exposes you to a different culture, new ways of
communicating and perspectives that may be vastly strange with those you grow up

with. In the situation, people are on working domestic, their life could carry on as

are two absolutely different kinds of fields. Work and personal time are not usually
involving in each other. Hence, sometimes you can hold the day’s work to
tomorrow if you have not finished it yet today.
With international one are difference, people have to finish all the day’s work
before leaving the office. This can make them experience more intense, but possibly
more exciting and worthwhile for their career.

The domestic and international cultures are extremely different so that to be a
part of the group at international working environment, people and TMU’s seniors
have to have the deep understanding of company’s culture

to do their business instead of others. To do that, English plays an essential role in
making the success for the business. Naturally, if it is mentioned the international
business, the first thing and one of the most important issue is English skills of their

staff although their employees are talented in the position.
2. The methods and the main tools
2.1.1. Analytical methods

being conducted. A variety of people including students, doctors and psychologists
use analytical research during studies to find the most relevant information. From

In this study, I would like to have a study at Thuongmai University’s senior so
that my object is the difficulties in the use of English in the international work
placement. I use the statistics and figures of companies in Viet Nam doing the
international business. Besides that, I also use the figures and information of
Thuongmai University’s senior status to give in this work
2.1.2. Comparative method

Comparative research methods have long been used in cross-cultural studies to
identify, analyze and explain similarities and differences across societies.
Whatever the methods used, research that crosses national boundaries
increasingly takes account of socio-cultural settings.
Problems arise in managing and funding cross-national projects, in gaining
access to comparable datasets and in achieving agreement over conceptual and
functional equivalence and research parameters.
Attempts to find solutions to these problems involve negotiation and
compromise and a sound knowledge of different national contexts.
The benefits to be gained from cross-national work include a deeper
understanding of other cultures and of their research processes.
This method would be used as the tool to compare the similar and different
things between the given companies or recommended issues on this study. I would
like to give two companies, one of them is travelling companies where all staff has

to use their English at work and there is the potential place for seniors. Secondly, I
will compare that kind of travelling companies to the import – export companies to
take deeply understanding and how hard Thuongmai University’s seniors will be
able to meet.
2.2. The contents of international environment and its effect

2.2.1. The movement of foreign firms and groups in Viet Nam
In the new era, the market is free and individual so that the movement is
towards the potential opportunities. Viet Nam expects that disbursed foreign direct

investment is rising gradually as the government in their efforts to attract
international manufactory to the country. The Ministry of Planning and Investment
targets to get more FDI energy, high technology, export via the efforts to develop
the place of business – friendly one. Mentioned by the World Bank, the business
market of Viet Nam proved greatly an good shift in 2017, with the large obtaining

from 82nd in 2016 to 68th in 2017), and remaining the position of 68th in 2018.

incentives and taxation policies for foreign investors and trying to respect its
commitments with regard to the international community.

foreigners are gradually intending to invest into the country. Viet Nam is creating many
good opportunities to international entrepreneurs all over the world when they have

greatly as well as creating the good conditions to international companies get the
win – win deal for both Viet Nam and its partners

Viet Nam is a developing country which has much potential development for
foreigners. With the population of more than 97 million (in 2019) as Danso.org
cited, the need of local people are highly increasing annual and have the high
requirement for the quality of life. In some fields, domestic firms cannot product the
items so as to meet the need of citizens. If the international companies focus on
those kinds of market, they will have the stable and good place to do their business
in Viet Nam.
Investors will continue to find traditional export-oriented sectors such
as electronics, garments, and footwear to be attractive. In addition to the exportoriented sectors, the domestic market also provides an opportunity for investors.
With growing urbanization and rising incomes, industries such as education, real

estate, retail, food & beverages, e-commerce.
Thirdly, the Viet Nam climate is stable
With the typical tropical monsoon climate, the characteristics are clement
which are creating the auspicious conditions on business for businessmen. In
comparison with Japan or The Public of Korea, the climate is strict, snows, hard
winter in spite of having the good politics.
• Locations
Regions such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Haiphong, and Bac Ninh continue
to remain as major FDI destinations, mainly due to developed infrastructure and
connectivity. There are several factors that must be considered including geographic
location, land, labor, infrastructure, industry, business environment and incentives.

In addition to CPTPP, Vietnam as an ASEAN member already has FTAs with
the member states of ASEAN, China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia, New
Zealand, and Hong Kong. Bilateral FTAs include Chile, Japan, South Korea, and
the Eurasia Economic Union (EAEU). Also in the pipeline is an FTA with the
European Union (EU), which is currently under ratification.
