The Red Cross is an international humanitarian agency. In times of war, it
is dedicated to reducing the sufferings of wounded soldiers, civilians, and
prisoners of war. In time of peace, it gives medical aid and other help to
victims of major disasters such as floods, earthquakes, epidemics, and
famines.
The initiative for founding the Red Cross came from a Swiss man called
Jean Henri Dunant. Appalled by the almost complete lack of care for
wounded soldiers, he appealed to the leaders of nations to found
societies devoted to the aid of the wounded in wartime. A conference
was held in Geneva in 1864, and official delegates of 12 nations signed
the first Geneva Convention, laying down rules for the treatment and
protection of the wounded and the disaster-stricken. It was also at this
meeting that the famous symbol of the organization, the white flag
bearing a red cross, was adopted.
It was Henry Davison, president of the American Red Cross War
Committee, who proposed forming a federation of these National
Societies. An international medical conference initiated by Davison
resulted in the birth of the League of Red Cross Societies in 1991. In
November 1991, it became the International Federation of Red Cross. The
Federation’s mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people who are
victims of natural disasters, poverty and health emergencies.
The International Red Cross has its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
Today, the total number of national Red Cross societies from all over the
world has mounted to 186. So help and support are able to be rapidly
sent to wherever there are victims of catastrophe, for example, to help
the victims of Asia tsunami in 2004. Red Cross and Red Crescent National
Societies in the countries hit by the tsunami reacted without hesitation to
help those struggling to survive, despite the fact that many staff and
volunteers had lost families, friends, colleagues and livelihoods. For
example, the Indonesian Red Cross Headquarters in Banda Aceh was
washed away, but a temporary office was in place within hours and the
injured were being helped.

There are five permanent members and ten non-permanent members in
this organization. The permanent members include: China, France, the
Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The ten
non-permanent members are elected by the General Assembly and not
eligible for immediate reelection. Viet Nam was among the five countries
recently elected to replace the five non-permanent members of the
Security Council from January 2008.
The organization is a technical agency of the United Nations. It was
founded in 1947 for the purpose of promoting the safe and orderly
development of civil aviation throughout the world. It sets international
standards and regulations necessary for the safety, efficiency and
regularity of air transportation.
This organization was established by the General Assembly of the United
Nations in 1965 to promote “sustainable human development” in
developing countries. It strives to reduce poverty; increase literacy;
create jobs; enhance technical cooperation between industrialized and
non-industrialized nations; preserve and protect the environment; and
ensure that women receive recognition, encouragement, and training.
The main goal of this organization is to eliminate hunger on the world
scale and its mandate is to “raise levels of nutrition, improve agricultural
productivity, better the lives of the rural population, and contribute to the
growth of the world economy.” It originated from a conference in Virginia,
U.S.A., in 1943, called by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, with the
presence of 34 nations.
The organization was established in 1948 in order to reduce human
disease, sponsor medical research, offer emergency aid during disasters,
and improve nutrition, housing, sanitation and working conditions in
developing countries. The agency is best known for its vaccination
programs and its successful battle against smallpox.
This organization was established in 1994 and began operation in 1995.
It promotes and puts into effect the provisions of trade laws and
regulations. The organization has the authority to manage and regulate
new and existing free trade agreements, to supervise world trade
practices, and to settle trade disputes among member states.

Thousands of people died or are missing, and more than 45 million
people were affected by the earthquake, which has been the worst
natural disaster to hit China for 30 years.
The American Red Cross has contributed $20 million to support the
relief and recovery efforts of the Red Cross Society of China. These funds
will be used to assist survivors through the purchase and distribution of
relief supplies, coordination of logistics and transportation of disaster
workers to the hardest hit areas. The American Red Cross has also sent
relief experts to the affected area to help monitor and coordinate the
response efforts. On June 6, the American Red Cross co-hosted a forum to
address the U.S. response and recovery efforts following the earthquake.
More than 30 representatives from humanitarian organizations, the
business companies and the government participated in the event.
More than 35,000 staff and volunteers with the Red Cross Society of
China responded to the disaster by distributing food, water, tents and
other essential items. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red
Crescent Societies are providing 100,000 tents to help those in need.
The Red Cross Society of China is a very strong organization with
extensive experience responding to disasters. The American Red Cross
has long history of working with the Red Cross Society of China, going to
back to famines in 1906 and including severe storms earlier this year.

and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies,
arid they have been ready to provide additional support such as disaster
workers, relief supplies or financial assistance.
