HOW TO TEACH READING
Step
1: Sts listen and read silently and then
repeat after the recording
Step 2: T provides the new words
Step 3: Ask Sts to translate the reading into
Vietnamese
Step 4: Have Sts circle the verbs in red, the
adjectives in blue, underline the subjects,…
Step 5: Design some questions and get Sts to
answer (Yes or No; True or False)

GAME 1: RUNNING DICTATION
- Divide the class into 3 or 4
teams
- T sticks some sentences or a
short passage on the wall
- Each team chooses a
secretary
- Sts from each team go to the wall and memorise the
information, then Sts come back their team and dictates
the information to the secretary and the secretary write it
down. The first team to finish says : “We win”.
- T checks the spelling.
GAME 2: THAT’S NOT RIGHT
As you read the story to the Sts, try to trick them by
changing some words
T reads: “Now a bird’s in the tree. The bird’s got the
ball. Look at the bird!...”. When Sts hear a mistake,
they shout out: “That’s no right”. Then have them
supply the correct words.
GAME 3: HOT POTATO
Write questions on 12-15 pieces of
paper (1/paper)
Then wrap the papers around each
other to make paper ball
Sts sit in a circle
While T plays music, Sts throw the
paper ball to each other. When T
stops the music, the St is holding
the ball takes off the outside piece
of paper, reads the question and
answer it.
Note: practise specific structures

GAME 4: TRUE OR FALSE
Each
st
writes
6
statements
about
themselves.
3
statements are true and
three ones are false.
Sts take turn reading
their statements aloud
in small groups. The
other Sts guess which
statements are true or
false. Sts will get one
point for each correct
guess.
GAME 5: CHAIN GAME
Divide the class into 3-4 groups
Explain the task. S1 makes a sentence. S2 repeats the
sentence and adds to it. S3 repeat the S2’s sentence and
add to it
Eg:
S1= Last week, I went shopping.
S2= Last week, I went shopping and read a novel.
S3= Last week, I went shopping and read a novel and ….
S4 continues until a st can’t remember what to say.
Point out that the information in the sentence can be false.
Model the game with one group.
Note: Use this game to warm up the first class to help St
to remember their names in class, or review specific vocab
topics: food (I like….), clothes (I went to the bookstore and
bought…)
GAME 6: WORD CHAIN
Place the word cards on the board in a given sequence
Divide class into 2 teams
Invite 1 st from each team to stand in front of the
class, back to the board
Eg: T writes Red
- First, point to a student. He says the first word in the
sequence
T writes Black
- Next, point to another st. He says the next word in the
sequence
Continue with each st saying the next word in the
sequence, the st with good memory will get 1 point for
his team.
GAME 7: COMICS
Find a comic story and photocopy it
Whiteout the text in it
Copy it again
Make a copy for all of your Sts
Have them write their own story
You can have them write it in a specific tense
ot it could be a free activitiy
GAME 8: WRITING RELAY
Have
2 small groups of sts come up
to the board
Say a sentence from your lesson
Have the Sts take turn writing the
sentence one word in each time
Each person in the groups can only
write 1 word in his turn
The first groups can write the full
sentence and say it correctly gets a
point
GAME 9: PASS THE BALL
Place flashcards from your
lesson in a bag
Play music and have the kids
pass the bag along sown the
nine or around the circle
Stop the music
Have St who is holing the bag
pulls out a card and says
what it is
Then have all the Sts repeat
together
GAME 10: MAKE LINES
Divide
the class into 2 teams and make 2
lines
Give an instruction such as “make 2 lines
from tall to short, long hair to short hair,
fat to thin,…”
GAME 11: SPY
Have Sts make a circle in
class
T will point to a st and say
a word with “Pang or
Bum”. (Eg: rabbit, pang)
St who is pointed has to
sit down, 2 sts beside the
pointed st will make a gun
and say: Rabbit, pang. The
st is faster will win.
GAME 12: FACE TO FACE
Divide the class into 2
teams
Have 1 st from each stand
in front of the class
T gives the topic of lesson
St A reads one word and
then st B’s turn
If the st can’t give his
answer, the team will lose
GAME 13: BEAT THE MATCH
T prepares some pieces of
paper and places them on the
table
Eg: name 5 yellow things, name
5 words start with letter A,…
Get one st to pick up a piece of
paper
T says “go” the st has to get
one stick of the match and
answer the question while the
stick is on fire
Try to answer before the stick
burns out
GAME 14: HOW MANY WORDS CAN YOU
MAKE?
Work individualy or in groups
Sts try to make as many
English words as they can
from the letters that make
up a word of your choice
Write
the word on the
whiteboard and give them 5
to 10 minutes to finifh before
checking that their words
are vilid and spelt correctly.
Whoever makes the most
words win
Eg:

The Sts must then write as

in the form of a relay race
Each team wins one point
for each correct word
GAME 19:
MAGIC BOX
Sts work in groups
Draw a puppet for each team
Give a box with many words (ANGEL, BOOM,
GUN)
Sts have to do 3 steps: fill in the blank-make a
sentence-choose a paper in the box)
If they choose ANGEL, they will get balloon,
sticker,…
If they choose BOOM, their puppet will lose
one part of its body
If they choos GUN, they will have a right to
shoot another team’s puppet
GAME 20:
Have
BINGO
Sts write the new
words in the previous
lesson in 5 minutes
Eg: School things (pen,
pencil, ruler, book, bag,
…)
T reads 5 words and Sts
have the same words will
shout “Bingo”
Give a sticker for quick
sts
GAME 21:
ACTION
Make 2 lines
Let sts turn their backs
T whisper one word for the first person in each line
They should pass the word by acting it out to the
nest persons (give them the signal to begin)
Before passing the word to the next person, he
should tap the shoulder of the next person as a go
signal to turn his back again ad see the action to
be passed
The last person at the end of the line should shout
the possible answer
The first group who guess it right gets a point
