I. GENERAL INTRODUCTION
Generally, English is a difficult subject for students at the secondary education level.
It is different from other subjects. Therefore, it requires the teacher and all students to
work hard and spend much time on this subject. Unlike the old textbook and syllabus,
the new ones do not focus on teaching grammar and vocabulary but on teaching
students how to communicate. The new textbook and syllabus concentrate on all the
four skills: Listening- Speaking- Reading- Writing. Thus, the teacher must apply the
new methods flexibly and creatively to reach the targets.
English 8 is intended for those who have already finished studying English 6 and
English 7. this textbook is designed according to the “Thematic approach”. It consists
of 16 units. Each unit has seven sections: Getting Started, Listen and Read, Speak,
Listen, Read, Write and Language Focus. These units are developed from the six
major themes: You and me, Education, Community, Health, Recreation, The world
around us.
Dealing with this textbook and syllabus, both teacher and students face some
difficulties. For the teacher, he has no instruction documents or reference books
besides the textbook and teacher’s book. Furthermore, there is a lack of equipment
such as pictures, projectors, etc…. For students, although they have enough books,

they lack reference books. They are of different levels and some do not spend enough
time dealing with this subject.
II. THE TARGET

2. Measures to be taken
- All the new methods should be applied actively, creatively and effectively, from
preparing the lesson to teaching it.
- The teacher should spend more time preparing the lessons. The teacher may make
some simple equipment and visual aids for teaching such as pictures, drawings,
flashcards…
- The teacher should consult reference materials and ask fellow teachers for advice or
experience.
- The teacher should give students a lot of homework to do at home and often check
students’ homework and preparations.
- Students should be always encouraged to study the subject and gain good results of
learning English.
