EXERCISE
I. Use the correct present tense forms of the verbs
in brackets:
The man (go) to work by train every day. He
(stay) in the train for haft an hour: and (seat) and
(stand) and (read) his newspaper. He ( try) to
read all the news during the journey and in that
way (know) a lot about the topics of the day.
II. Put the verb in brackets into the Simple Past
or the Past Progressive:
1. They (study) in the library when the fire alarm
went off.
2. Albert Einstein (die) in 1955.
3. As I (cross) the street, two cars (race) by me at
full speed.
4. As he (come) up to his house in the darkness,
he (see) that a man (climb) out of one the
bedroom windows.
5. John (work) hard when suddenly the door
(open).
6. I (look) up the sky; dark clouds ( gather).
7. What she (do) when you (arrive) there? – She
(write) a letter.
8. I (go) to ask you to help me, but you (sleep)
peacefully when I (look) into your room. So I
(decide) to do it alone.
III. Put the verb in brackets into the Simple Past
or the Past Perfect:
1. John was not at home. He (go) away.
2. They (not come) back home until they finished


their work.
3. My father (tell) me he (give) up smoking.
4. He (do) nothing before he (see) me.
5. He (die) after he ( be) ill a long time.
6. He (be) late because he (have) an accident.
7. My friend (not see) me for many years when I
met him.
8. I (be) sorry that I (hurt) him.
IV. Put the verb in brackets into the Simple Past,
the Past Progressive or the Past Perfect:
1. Yesterday Tom (go) to the store before he (go)
home.
2. What you (do) at 6 p.m. yesterday?
3. Before she (watch) TV, she (do) her
homework.
4. When I (arrive) his house, he still (sleep).
5. The children (play) football when their mother
(come) back home.
6. Our teacher (tell) us yesterday that he ( visit)
England in 1997.
7. Why they (not visit) me while they (stay) in
London?
8. I (be) very tired because I (work) all day
yesterday.
