B. LETTER
Topic 1
You are a student at an English language school in Brighton and are living in private
accommodation with other flat mates. You have not had hot water or heating for some time.
The landlord’s workmen have tried to fix the problem but without success. Write a letter to
the landlord. In your letter:

state your reason for writing

describe the problems and explain how you feel

propose a solution and risk the landlord to take action

Dear Mr. Jones,
I am one of the tenants at your property in Upper Lewes Road, and am writing to complain
about the fact that we do not have any hot water or heating in our house.
As you know, we have been living in this house since September and have always paid our
rent on time. However, we have had no hot water for last two weeks. This is making our lives very
difficult, especially as it is now the middle of winter. Last week you said you would send a
workman to our house within 3 days, but no one came. After calling many times, the workman
eventually arrived at the house 5 days later. Unfortunately, he said he could not fix the problem
because the boiler was too old! We are now extremely unhappy about this solution.
We are prepared to continue to rent your house but please arrange for emergency repairs to be
made. We also request a 40% discount on our rent for the period we have been without any hot
water or heating.
We are looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Topic 2: You are going on a short course to a training college abroad. It is a college that
you have not been to before. Write a letter to the accommodation officer. In your letter

give details of your course and your arrival/departure date

explain your accommodation needs

ask for information about getting to and from the college

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to inform you that I will be attending the Advanced Life Insurance course, being

held from Tuesday 24th August until 27rd August, at the University of Oxford.
I will be arriving on the afternoon of Monday 23th and will be leaving on the morning of
Saturday the 28th of August, so I will require a single room for this time. I would prefer my own
bathroom, if this is possible, but do not mind sharing if I have to; however, as I am wheelchair
bound, the room will have to be disability friendly. Could you please tell me how much this will
cost and how I should make a payment? Do you accept VISA?
As I do not know the area, I would also be grateful if you could provide some information
about getting to and from the University. Will I need to take public transport from the station or is
there a University bus service? Any information on what to see and do in the area would also be
greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your assistance.
Yours faithfully,
Topic 3: You are looking for a part-time job. Write a letter to an employment agency. In
your letter: introduce yourself, explain what sort of job you would like, and say what
experience and skills you have
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am a German national from Heidelberg and at present I am studying for a Master’s degree in
Commercial Law here, at the University of Bielefeld, where I have been for the last two months.
I am looking for a part-time job and I wonder if you can help me. Probably, I would like an
office job, perhaps working as a secretary, office administrator or typist. I can only work during the
afternoons and at weekends as my university studies occupy most of the day. I would be ready to
start immediately.
I am a competent typist and I am computer-literate. In addition, I speak Polish and German
fluently and I have been learning English for the past three years. While I studied for my degree, I
worked as a part-time office manager for an import-export firm in Heidelberg. In recent years, I
have also had temporary summer jobs as a hotel receptionist in Mannheim, Germany.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,

Topic 4: Your neighbors have recently written to you to complain about the noise from your
house/flat. Write a letter to your neighbors. In your letter: explain the reasons for the noise,
apologize, describe what action you will take
Dear James,
I was very shocked to get your letter saying that the noise from my flat has been spoiling your
evenings and causing you some distress. I am really, really sorry about that. I had no idea that you
would be able to hear so much, so I hope you will accept my apologies.
As you may have guessed, I am trying to refit my kitchen in the evenings when I get home
from work. Unfortunately it is all getting longer than expected and I have been having problems
with getting things to fit properly. This has meant to a lot of banging and hammering.
As the kitchen is still not finished, I have decided to call in a professional builder who will
finish the work in the next day or two. He’ll work only during daytime hours, so you won’t be
disturbed in the evenings again, I promis.
Sorry to have caused these problems.
Topic 5: You will move to a new city for work. You know some people who live there. Ask them
for help finding accommodation, Tell them where you would like to live, Tell them the type of
place you are looking for
Dear Sir,
I wanted to let you know that I am coming to live in (city) and I would like to ask if you can
help me with a few things before I arrive and start my new job.
Do you think you could give me a hand finding somewhere to live? Ideally I would like to live
close to where I am going to be working, or in the downtown district. If possible I would like to be
near some shops, like a supermarket and a DVD rental place. As I really love sports it would be
great to be near a park too.

I’m not too worried about the place itself. Obviously I will be looking for a flat, rather than a
house, as it is just going to be me and I won’t be able to afford too much. So, a place with one
bedroom is fine, but I would like to have a private bathroom (not shared), a kitchen and some kind
of living room. It doesn’t matter if the kitchen is small, but it would nice to have one. I would prefer

to live somewhere new, so anything in a modern apartment block would be great.
Thanks for your help
Topic 6: You cannot go to a company where you got an offer. Write a letter to the HR
supervisor to: explain the reason why you decline the offer, express you gratitude, explain you
like your current job very much
Dear Sir,
I was a potential employee to whom you made a job offer. I would like to extend my thanks
for such an offer, especially at such a company as yours. It is, however, with deepest regret that I
must decline your generous invitation and apologize for any inconvenience I may have caused.
I appreciate immensely the interview organized by your company and the extensive effort
made by all the staff involved. Their attitude was impressive and highly commendable. As such I
must pass my sincerest apologies for any difficulties related to the extra work that must have been
involved, and the time wasted on your behalf. Although the offer was substantial, it wasn’t enough
to encourage me to sever the bonds with my current employer. During my time at my present
company my superiors supported me and fostered my career. In short, they made me the employee I
am today.
I would like to keep the lines of communication open between our two parties, and look
forward to further correspondence.
Yours sincerely
Topic 7: You had a good meal in a local restaurant with your family. Write a letter to the
newspaper to tell them about it, describe the meal you had, and why you think the restaurant
is worth visiting.
To the Editor,
I am a long standing member of our local community and I am writing a recommendation to
other citizens for one of our fine neighbourhood dining establishments; The Lone Star Café.
There were many impressive attributes which struck me upon my entrance, such as the décor
and ambience. I particularly enjoyed the laidback attitude of the place. But for my mind it was the
service along with the size and quality of the portions that was most memorable.
The service was professional yet intimate, and along with the sheer quantity of the dishes
served, motivated me to pass on my recommendation. I enjoyed a steak of mammoth proportions

and a giant fresh, crisp salad accompanied by a selection of appropriately selected seasonal
vegetables. The piece de resistance, however, was the rich Black Forest gateau served as dessert –
and all for a reasonable price.
I hope after reading this, potential customers will frequent this diner – Bon appetite.
Yours truly
Topic 8:You ordered a new cheque book from your bank two weeks ago but you have received
nothing.Write a letter to the manager complaining about the bad service. Say when and how
you ordered the cheque book. Ask how much longer you will have to wait and ask the
manager what action he will take over this matter.
Dear Sir,

I am writing to complain about the service that I have received at your bank. Two weeks ago I
ordered a cheque book by filling out the appropriate form when I visited the bank but since then I
have not received the cheque book and I have received no other correspondence from the bank. It is
quite urgent for me as I have quite a few bills that I need to pay that can only be paid by cheque.
Please write to me as soon as possible and let me know how much longer I will have to wait
for my cheque book and please explain why I have had to wait so long. I would also like to know
what action you are going to take regarding this bad service.
I have been a customer of your bank now for fifteen years and this is the first time I have had
to complain. It is very disappointing.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Topic 9: You would like to buy some electrical goods at a shop in a nearby town.Write a
letter to the shop and ask if they have the things you want or whether they will be able to
order them. Ask what the prices are and how long they will be able to hold the goods for you.
Dear Sir,
I am writing to enquire if you have various electrical goods that I want to buy. I have tried
shops in my own town but they don‛t have exactly what I want.
I want the new Sony DVD player, a Technics turntable and a radio with long wave capability.

Do you have these items in stock or, if not, will you be able to order them soon? I also need to know
what price you charge for these items. If you do have these things, would you be able to hold them
for me and for how long? I am free this weekend and, if you have them, I can come over on
Saturday morning to pay you and pick them up.
Please write back to me as soon as possible at the above address or call me on my mobile
number (07364 957 143). I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Topic 10:
You have been invited to attend an interview for a place studying a course in a college.
Unfortunately because of a previous appointment you cannot come at the time they
wish.Write a letter to the admissions tutor and explain your position. Apologize and offer to
come on another day or later the same day. Ask also how long the interview will be and
whether there will be any tests during it.
Dear Sir,
Thank you very much for your letter dated 15th May inviting me for an interview at your
college on Wednesday 2nd June at 10am. I am extremely sorry but I am unable to come to an
interview at that time because I have a mathematics exam that morning. It really cannot I miss this
exam but of course I really wish to attend the interview with you. Is it possible that I could come to
the interview the same day but in the afternoon? Failing that, I would be able to come the next day
or any day after.
I would also like to ask some things about the interview. I would like to know how long it
will last and also whether I will be required to do any tests during it.
Once again I apologize for not being able to attend the interview at the time that you wanted
and I hope I will be able to meet with you at another time.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,
Topic 11:
A friend of yours is going on holiday soon and has asked you to recommend a

destination.Write a letter to your friend and recommend a good place for a holiday that you
have visited before. Say where you went, where you stayed, what you can do there and what
the food was like.
Dear Sarah,
Thanks for your letter. I‛m glad you and the family are well. So, you‛re thinking of going on
holiday in the UK. Well I can certainly recommend one destination for you. I went one year to a
place called Lochinver in the north west of Scotland. It‛s quite a long trip to get there as it‛s only
about thirty miles from the north coast but it‛s worth it.
There are only a few places to stay. There are two hotels, the Kirkaig and the Assynt in the
centre of town, and a campsite just outside town. We stayed at the Kirkaig Hotel but I know you and
your family are keen campers so you might prefer the camping option
There is a lot to do but it‛s a bit dependent on the weather. There‛s a beautiful beach, a golf
course, the fishing is excellent and there are fantastic hills nearby for walking in amazing scenery. If
it‛s wet there‛s a small cinema in town but that‛s about all. Take some board games!
The food is typical British in the hotels but some of the Scottish specialities are fantastic. If
you‛re camping though, food will be up to you!
Anyway, I‛ve got to go out now and pick up the kids. Write again if you need any more
information.
Regards,
Topic 12
You have just spent a weekend at a friend’s house. When you returned home, you
discovered you have left a coat containing some belongings in his house.
Write a letter to your friend telling him that you left the coat. Tell him what the coat looks like,
where you think you left it and what was inside it. Make some suggestions about how to get it
back.
Dear John,
I‛m back at home now after that great weekend at your house. Thanks very much for putting
me up. I hope you‛ll be able to come and stay with me some time soon as well.
Unfortunately I left my new coat at your house. Do you remember the dark brown one that I
wore when we went walking on Saturday afternoon? It is a New Look coat that goes down to midthigh level. It has a black collar, dark brown buttons and large pockets on both sides. I think I left it

on the hooks behind your front door. Do you remember we hung up our coats there when we got
back from our walk?
It‛s quite important for me as I have my wallet in the inside breast pocket and my diary in the
right outside pocket. I have a friend who is driving through your town on Thursday and he will be
quite near your office. Could he please collect it from there? I have given him your office phone
number and he will call you on Thursday morning. Give me a call if this is not possible.
Anyway, thanks again for a great weekend and I hope to see you soon
Regards,

LOT OF SWEET MEMORIES WITH MY FAMILY AND NEIGHBORS, SO I DON’T WANT TO
LEAVE THERE.
Part 2
In summer time, I want to do a part time job. There are some jobs to do such as a shop assistant,
tutor, and delivery person. I like to become a tutor because of some reasons. First, I love working

with children. They are very lovely. Second, I have better teaching conditions, avoid complex
contacts and competition. Finally, I feel happy when transfer knowledge to them and help them
study better. When I teach children, I can get experience for my future job.
Part 3
In my opinion, playing sports is beneficial to everybody. First, it helps us prevent health
problems and avoid sickness, such as, heart disease, cancer. Secondly, when we play sports, we can
keep fit and lose weight. Therefore, playing sports is good for overweight people. Besides, after
working or studying hard all day, we feel relaxed and reduce stress if we play some sports, such as,
swimming, football, volleyball, tennis … Finally, playing sports gives us a chance to meet new
people and make friends with them. This helps us have more and more friends.
* Nowadays, more and more people play sports because modern life makes people become less
active, and they know many benefits of playing sports.
* Besides playing sports, to stay healthy, we should have a good meal with a lot of vegetables,
fruits, eggs, meat, fish … We also sleep enough time, about 8 hours a day. In addition, we should
avoid bad habits, such as, smoking, drinking alcohol, staying up late …
* To encourage students to play sports, schools in Vietnam should tell them about benefits
which playing sports bring to. In addition, gym teachers should train students to play some popular
sports and organize some exciting sport events for them to join. Finally, schools should have
facilities for students to play sports.

Test 2

like lesson plans and to impart my knowledge to them.
Part 2
There are some gifts I can give my close friend on her birthday. My friend may like a shirt or a
bunch of flowers, especially roses. However, I think my friend likes a book most / best. There are
some reasons why I give her a book. First, my friend likes reading. She often reads books when she
has free time. In addition, the book I give her is the one she is looking for. It is “Dacnhan tam”. I
hope that after she reads this book, she can learn some good lessons about behaviors to other people.
Part 3
Travelling brings people a lot of advantages. First of all, when we travel to a new place, we can
learn a lot about a new culture of that place. Secondly, travelling is a good time to enjoy beautiful
landscapes. For example, if we travel to Da Lat, we can enjoy the beauty of Than Tholake, Love
valley, Camly water fall. Besides, many people like travelling because they can enjoy local specialty
of the place they visit. Finally, travelling helps us relax and reduce stress after we work hard.
* I like travelling with my family or my friends. I don’t like travelling alone because it is very
boring, and sometimes dangerous.
* When I travel with other people, I may have some problems. First, it often takes a long time
to discuss about the trip with other people. For example, I like travelling to the seaside, but my
family prefers a trip to the mountains. The second problem is lack of freedom to do what I like when
I travel with other people.
* If I had a chance to travel abroad, I would like to visit Singapore because it is famous as a
green, and beautiful country. There are also many beautiful places to visit. Besides, Singapore is a
good place to go shopping and to enjoy fresh air.

Test 3
Part 1
Social Interaction
1. I am living in a big family. My family has / consists of my grandparents, my parents, my two
older sisters, one older brother, one younger-sister, two nieces and me.
2. When living in a big family, I have many advantages. Firstly, I can learn more life
experiences from members in my family, especially from my grandparents. My grandparents teach
me a lot of good things. Secondly, I usually feel funny because my family often talks to each other
and share emotions/ feelings. Third, members in my family usually help each other when meeting
difficult situations. Besides, housework can be shared by members in my family; each of us will do
a chore. Therefore, we not only feel less tired but also happy.
3. However, I also have some problems when I live in a big family. First of all, my siblings are
not occasionally sociable due to our different hobbies. Secondly, sometimes I feel noisy because of
having many people in my house. Third, I have no private space and freedom to do what I want.
Part 2
I think that the countryside will be the best choice for my friend’s family when they are going to
travel for a week because of some reasons. First, the countryside is very quiet and peaceful. As a
result, they will feel comfortable and relaxed after working or studying hard in the city. Second,
they will feel interested in lots of activities, such as, fishing, boating, gardening and flying a kite in
the fields. Besides, they can enjoy local food and fresh air in the countryside. Moreover, their
children may play together with other children there because people in the countryside are friendly,
helpful and hospitable.
Part 3
Doing a part time job brings several benefits to students. The first benefit is money. When they
work hard, they can earn some money to solve their financial problems, such as, their study or daily
life. Maybe, they can also partly support their parents. Moreover, it helps them learn life skills like
communicating, behaving and working in group. Those are really necessary for students. In
addition, students can get job experience from part time jobs which will be useful for their future
jobs. If they have more experience, they will have more confidence. Beside these advantages above,

I think that part time jobs help students know the value of money; therefore, they will know how to
spend it in a reasonable way.
* There are some part-time jobs that Vietnamese students like to take part in such as, tutors,
waiters, shop assistants, receptionists, tour guides, typists, flier senders and many other jobs.
Students love to have a part-time job because they want to make their own money. Indeed, more
and more students don’t want to rely on the money from their parents any more, and also these jobs
provide them a huge amount of experience that they could never gain if they don’t have a job. Last
but not least, as students, they don’t have much academic knowledge to work in many specific jobs,
so the jobs that I listed above are easier for them to get.
* Because of many reasons, we have to agree that having a job while studying in university is
one of the best ways to be independent in getting income as well as gaining experience. However,
there are a few negative influences on students’ academic and personal life.
First, spending much time on working may distract students from their lessons, which leads
them to a bad result at the end of the year. In addition, everyday students study for at least 4 hours

then they have to work for maybe 4 to 6 hours per day, how much time do they have left to take care
of themselves? In some worse cases these students, especially female can be abused as they work in
some sensitive places for example, pool clubs, karaoke restaurants and so on.
* Due to the reality needs, students are supposed to be trained for the new jobs right after
graduation. Many students tried to get experience from doing a part time job. However, without
teachers or supervisors’ advice, students sometimes get lost and get bad results in studying. From
this point of view, schools should help students to choose a suitable job in a suitable time before
letting students get a part time job.

on studying rather than playing games. They help us develop positive study skills and habits that
will serve us well throughout life (trongsuốtcuộcđời).

share the housework. Besides, my parents usually give me some good advice when I have problems.
I love them very much.
3. In the evening, I prefer to stay at home because my family can watch TV together and talk
about everything. It is so cozy. Moreover, I have to do my homework; sometimes I listen to music to
relax.
Part 2
I will travel to PhuQuoc with my friends on our summer holidays. We will go there by plane
because of some reasons. First, although travelling by plane may be expensive, it takes a very short
time. Second, a hi-speed boat makes us very tired because they are seasick. Finally, if they cannot
swim, it is dangerous to go by boat. Besides, I fell the service on the plane is very good and feel
very comfortable and happy.
Part 3
I agree that listening to music in free time is interesting. First of all, music can help us relax and
reduce stress after working and studying hard. In addition, when we listen to music we can develop
our personal skills like singing skill. Moreover, when we listen to soft music, we may concentrate
on our work better because music makes us relaxed and happy. Finally, listening to English music is
a good way for us to practice English and learn new words.
* There are many free time activities of young people in Vietnam such as jogging so that they

stay healthy and stronger. Besides, shopping, listening to music and watching films makes them

happy and relaxed. However, I think the most popular activity is surfing the Internet because of
some reasons. First, today many young people have laptops and mobile phones connected to the
Internet. Second, these hi-tech devices give them many functions like playing gameS, watching
films, reading news.
* Old and young people have different free time activities. In free time, old people/ THE

Part 2

Nowadays, when students have to do assignments, they can get information from some sources
as books in the libraries, articles on scientific magazines or articles on the Internet. There are some
benefits in both ways.
First, the information from these books and magazines are usually more reliable than articles on
the Internet because they are written by famous writers and experts, whereas anyone can upload
their writing on the internet. Therefore, some writings are unreliable.
Second, they can go to the libraries to borrow these books and magazines to read and keep us

Part 3
Nowadays, it is difficult to find a good job. Having a good job is everyone’s dream. In my
opinion, having a good job includes several factors. First of all, it gives us a high salary and benefits
such as, bonus on holidays, social insurance, health insurance, or unemployment insurance when we
lose jobs, and so on. Secondly, a good job is suitable to our professional skill, so we can work faster
and better. For example, if we study medicine we can work effectively in a place related to
medicine. Besides, a good job gives us good working environments like comfortable and safe
working place with large office rooms and air conditioners and the colleagues are kind. Finally, a
good job does not bring so much stress to us. It helps us to have good mind, so we will be working
better.
* Now, the workplace in Vietnam has been improved so much. There are many modern
machines and facilities such as, computers, printers, fax machines, telephones, and air conditioners.
* The life’s demand is increasing day by day, so a job with high salary is very necessary for us.
It gives us much money to pay for our life. If we have enough finance, we will choose a job of
interest. So, we feel happy.
* I think that a famous singer may earn much more money than a doctor because they have a lot
of shows abroad with high salary. Besides, they have many records to sell everyone.
