Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the following questions
As the twentieth century began, the importance of formal education in the United States increased. The
frontier had mostly disappeared and by 1910 most Americans lived in towns and cities. Industrialization
and the bureaucratization of economic life combined with a new emphasis upon credentials and expertise to
make schooling increasingly important for economic and social mobility. Increasingly, too, schools were
viewed as the most important means of integrating immigrants into American society.
The arrival of a great wave of southern and eastern European immigrants at the turn of the century
coincided with and contributed to an enormous expansion of formal schooling. By 1920 schooling to age
fourteen or beyond was compulsory in most states, and the school year was greatly lengthened.
Kindergartens, vacation schools, extracurricular activities, and vocational education and counseling extended
the influence of public schools over the lives of students, many of whom in the larger industrial cities were
the children of immigrants. Classes for adult immigrants were sponsored by public schools, corporations,
unions, churches, settlement houses, and other agencies.
Reformers early in the twentieth century suggested that education programs should suit the needs of
specific populations. Immigrant women were once such population. Schools tried to educate young women so
they could occupy productive places in the urban industrial economy, and one place many educators
considered appropriate for women was the home.
Although looking after the house and family was familiar to immigrant women, American education gave
homemaking a new definition. In preindustrial economies, homemaking had meant the production as well as
the consumption of goods, and it commonly included income-producing activities both inside and outside the
home, in the highly industrialized early-twentieth-century United States, however, overproduction rather
than scarcity was becoming a problem. Thus, the ideal American homemaker was viewed as a consumer

rather than a producer. Schools trained women to be consumer homemakers cooking, shopping, decorating,
and caring for children "efficiently" in their own homes, or if economic necessity demanded, as employees in
the homes of others. Subsequent reforms have made these notions seem quite out-of-date.
Question 26: Vacation schools and extracurricular activities are mentioned in paragraph 2 to illustrate ___.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your sheet to indicate the correct answer
to each of the question
Scientists agree that the earth's rising temperatures are fueling longer and hotter heat waves, more
frequent droughts, heavier rainfall, and more powerful hurricanes. In 2015, for example, scientists said that an
ongoing drought in California - the state's worst water shortage in 1,200 years - had been intensified by 15
percent to 20 percent by global warming. They also said the odds of similar droughts happening in the future
had roughly doubled over the past century. And in 2016, the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and
Medicine announced that it's now possible to confidently attribute certain weather events, like some heat
waves, directly to climate change.
The earth's ocean temperatures are getting warmer, too - which means that tropical storms can pick up
more energy. So global warming could turn, say, a category 3 storm into a more dangerous category 4 storm. In

fact, scientists have found that the frequency of North Atlantic hurricanes has increased since the early 1980s,
as well as the number of storms that reach categories 4 and 5. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina - the costliest
hurricane in U.S. history struck New Orleans; the second - costliest, Hurricane Sandy, hit the East Coast in
2012.
The impacts of global warming are being felt across the globe. Extreme heat waves have caused tens of
thousands of deaths around the world in recent years. And in an alarming sign of events to come, Antarctica
has been losing about 134 billion metric tons of ice per year since 2002. This rate could speed up if we keep
burning fossil fuels at our current pace, some experts say, causing sea levels to rise several meters over the next
50 to 150 years.
Question 34: The word "intensified" in the passage mostly means ____.
A. made stronger
B. made higher
C. made drier
D. made faster
Question 35: The word "which" in the passage refers to ____.
A. climate change
B. that tropical storms can pick up more energy
C. weather events
D. the earth's ocean rising temperatures
Question 36: According to the reading what should be done to keep the sea level from rising too fast?
A. Stopping the future weather events from taking place.
B. Making people aware of the alarming sign of the future weather events.
C. Predicting future weather events.
D. Cutting down on burning fossil fuels.
Question 37: Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a consequence of the earth's rising temperatures?
