What Is Networking? (FREE)

What one tool can get jobs quicker than anything else? Networking. Why? The want ads never see even
half the jobs that come open. So if that’s the only place you’re looking, you may be about as
successful as a screen door on a submarine. But networking allows you to get the inside scoop of who’s
hiring and how you can cross the finish line before the hiring race even begins.
The two main goals of networking include meeting two kinds of people:
1. Those who may work at a firm and hear of openings.
2. Those who know people who may know of possible jobs.
While job seekers may frequently hear the term networking, they may not understand its meaning or
magnitude. Check out the success rate of those who network and you’ll be glad you took the time to
look this strategy over.
Networking: Meeting new people and creating a rapport with anyone who could potentially help you in
your job search.
Many job seekers may confuse networking with shmoozing or sucking up. Networking is basically
mingling for increased career success. The best contacts are made with a casual, honest approach that
tells people:
• Who you are
• What your career field is
• What you’re looking for in a job
• What you can do for them (always make it worth someone’s while to help you)
What networking is not:
• Stalking your neighbor who works at the agency of your dreams
• Starting a e-mailing or letter writing campaign to pressure people into helping you

• Constantly calling your friend in human resources
• Speaking about your plight in improper situations (funerals, hospital waiting rooms, etc.)
• Begging strangers for a job
• Passing your business card out to fellow subway riders
What networking is:
• Locating and meeting new people everyday, everywhere
• Going the extra mile by reaching out to those who can help you in your field
• Casually mentioning your need for a job
• Keeping your eyes and ears open for any opportunities your contacts may have
• Mentioning you know of an opening through a friend
• Asking if anyone knows of any companies who are hiring people in your field
