Ding’s graffiti was a terrible idea. It is a serious crime to write on a historic monument in
Egypt. You can go to prison for a year for doing it. But in the past, people could write on
monuments and no one was angry about it. At Giza there is an example of graffiti on a
temple wall from 1244 BC. It says ‘Hadnakhte … came to make an excursion and amuse
himself on the west of the Memphis, together with his brother, Panakhti’.

1. Why was it easy to find Ding Jinhao?
A. Because it was on a monument.
B. Because he wrote it on his blog.
C. Because it was basic and clear.

Son: Dad, how do spacecrafts go into the outer space?

Dad: Well,... That can be done thanks to the space technology. It typically begins with a
rocket launch.

</div>
<span class='text_page_counter'>(6)</span><div class='page_container' data-page=6>

Dad: Oh no. Some remain in space indefinitely, others reach the surface of a planet or the
moon.

Son: You mean some austronauts on those crafts never return?

Dad: Well, actually not all flights are manned. For example, in 1947, a rocket was launched
by America with only fruit flies.

Son: I also heard about the launch by the Soviet Union?

Dad: Right. The first unmanned flight, Sputnik 1, was launched in October 1957 and
another unmanned, Sputnik 2, was launched with a dog named Laika in November 1957.

Son: How about the first human flights?

Dad: The first human spaceflight was on 12 April 1961, carrying Russian cosmonaut Yuri
Gagarin. America sent John Glenn into space on Mercury Atlas 6 on 20 February 1962 and

in 1969, Neil Armstrong landed on the moon. He became the first human to walk on the
moon surface…

were launched on the Jupiter AM-18 rocket. Able was a 7-pound monkey, and Baker was a
11-ounce squirrel monkey. They were both successfully retrieved after a 300-mile
sub-orbital flight that took 16 minutes. However, Able died four days after the flight from a
reaction to the anaesthetic given during post-flight surgery. Baker died of kidney failure on
November 29th 1984, 25 years after the flight, at the age of 27.

<b>Sample writing:</b>

<i>Hi Professor Anderson,</i>

The idea of a virtual class is great! I like it very much, and I think other students will like it

too.

I love the idea because it is really convenient. We can meet online anytime to discuss things
related to our study. We can also ask for help from our friends without having to travel far.
When we post a problem online, we will receive a lot of comments and solutions from
different students. Based on these, we can work out the best solution.

I hope this idea will be applied quickly.

<i>Hope to see you soon!</i>
