<i><b>Read the passage and mark the letter A, B, </b></i><b>c </b><i><b>or D to indicate</b></i>
<i><b>the correct answer to each of the following questions.</b></i>

A number of factors related to the voice reveal the personality of the
speaker.

The first is the broad area of communication, which includes
imparting information by use of language, communicating with a
group or an individual and specialized communication through
performance. A person conveys thoughts and ideas through choice of
words, by a tone of voice that is pleasant or unpleasant, gentle or
harsh, by the rhythm that is inherent within the language itself, and by
speech rhythms that are flowing and regular or uneven and hesitant,
and finally, by the pitch and melody of the utterance. When speaking
before a group, a person's tone may indicate uncertainty or fright,
confidence or calm. At interpersonal levels, the tone may reflect ideas
and feelings over and above the words chosen, or may belie them.
Here the participant's tone can consciously or unconsciously reflect
intuitive sympathy or antipathy, lack of concern or interest, fatigue,
anxiety, enthusiasm or excitement, all of which are usually discernible
by the acute listener. Public performance is a manner of
communication that is highly specialized with its own techniques for
<b>obtaining effects by voice and/ or gesture. The motivation derived</b>
from the text, and in the case of singing, the music, in combination
with the performer’s skills, personality, and ability to create empathy
<b>will determine the success of artistic, political, or pedagogic</b>
<b>communication.</b>

Second, the voice gives psychological clues to a person's
self-image, perception of others, and emotional health. Self-image can be
indicated by a tone of voice that is confident, pretentious, shy,
aggressive, outgoing, or exuberant, to name only a few personality
traits. Also the sound may give a due to the facade or mask of that
person, for example, a shy person hiding behind an overconfident
front. How a speaker perceives the listener's receptiveness, interest,
<b>or sympathy in any given conversation can drastically alter the tone</b>

of presentation, by encouraging or discouraging the speaker
<b>Emotional health is evidenced in the voice by free and melodic</b>
sounds of the happy, by constricted and harsh sound of the angry, and
by dull and lethargic qualities of the depressed. ■

<i><b>Read the passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate</b></i>
<i><b>the correct answer to each of the following questions.</b></i>

There is a common expression in the English language referring to a
blue moon. When people say that something happens "only once in a
blue moon," they mean that it happens only very rarely, once in a great
while. This expression has been around for at least a century and a half;
there are references to this expression that date from the second half of
the nineteenth century.

The expression "a blue moon" has come to refer to the second
fullmoon occurring in any given calendar month. A second full moon is
not called a blue moon because it is particularly blue or is any.different
<b>in hue from the first full moon of the month. Instead, it is called a blue,</b>
moon because it is so rare. The moon needs a little more than 29 days
to complete the cycle from full moon to full moon. Because every month
except February has more than 29 days, every month will have at least
one full moon (except. February, which will have a full moon unless
there is a full moon at the very end of January and another full moon at
the very beginning of March). It is on the occasion when a given
calendar month has a second full moon that a blue moon occurs. This
does not happen very often, only three or four times in a decade.

The blue moons of today are called blue moons because of their
rarity and not because of their color; however, the expression "blue
moon" may have come into existence in reference to unusual
circumstances in which the moon actually appeared blue. Certain
natural phenomena of gigantic proportions can actually change the
appearance of the moon from Earth. The eruption of the Krakatoa
volcano in 1883 left dust particles in the atmosphere, which clouded the
sun and gave the moon a bluish tint. This particular occurrence of the
<b>blue moon may have given rise to the expression that we use today.</b>
Another example occurred more than a century later. When Mount
<b>Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines in 1991, the moon again took on a</b>
blue tint.

1. This passage is about

A. a phase of the moon B. an unusual color

C. a month Qn the calendar D. an idiomatic expression

<i><b>MODERN SURGERY</b></i>

The need for a surgical operation, especially an emergency
operation, almost always comes as a severe shock to the patient and
his family. Despite modern advances, most people still have an
irrational fear of hospitals and anesthetics. Patients do not often believe
they really need surgery— cutting into a part of the body as opposed to
treatment with drugs.

In the early years of the twentieth century there was little
specialization in surgery. A good surgeon was capable of performing
almost every operation that had been devised up to that time. Today
the situation is different. Operations are now being carried out that
were not even dreamed of 60 years ago. The heart can be safety
opened and its valves repaired. Clogged blood vessels can be cleaned
out, arid broken ones mended or replaced. A lung, the whole stomach,

or even part of the brain can be removed and still permit the patient to
live a comfortable and satisfactory life. However, not every surgeon
wants to, or is qualified to carry out every type of modern operation.

</div>
<span class='text_page_counter'>(33)</span><div class='page_container' data-page=33>

The scope of surgery has increased remarkably. Its safety has
increased too. The hospital stay after surgery has been shortened to as
little as a week for most major operations.

Many developments in modern surgery are almost incredible. They
include the replacement of damaged blood vessels with stimulated ones
made of plastic; the replacement of heart valves with plastic
substitutes; the transplanting of tissues such as the lens of the eye; the
invention of the artificial kidney to clean the blood of poisons at regular
intervals and the development of heart and lung machines to keep
patients alive during very long operations. All these things open a
hopeful vista for the future of surgery.

One of the most revolutionary areas of modern surgery is that of
organ transplants. Until a few years ago, no person, except an identical
twin, was able to accept into his body the tissues of another person
without reacting against them and eventually killing them. Recently,
however, it has been discovered that with the use of X-rays and special
drugs, it is possible to graft tissues from one person to another which
will survive for periods of a year or more. Kidney's have been
successfully transplanted between non-identical twins. Heart and lung
transplants have been reasonably successful in animals, though
rejection problems in human have yet to be solved.

<b>"Spare parts" surgery, the simple routine replacement of all</b>

<b>questions from 27 to 33.</b>

<i><b>The dangers of dieting</b></i>

Thanks to our modern life, with more and more time spent sitting
down in front of computers than ever before, the number of overweight
people is at a new high. As people financially search for a solution to
this problem, they often try some of the popular fad diets being offered.
<b>Many people see fad diets as innocuous ways of losing weight, and</b>
they are grateful to have them. Unfortunately, not only do fad diets

usually do the trick, they can actually be dangerous for your health.

Although permanent weight loss is the goal, few are able to achieve
it. Experts estimate that 95% of dieters return to their starting weight,

</div>
<span class='text_page_counter'>(37)</span><div class='page_container' data-page=37>

or even add weight. While the reckless use of fad diets can bring some
initial results, longterm results are very rare.

Nonetheless, people who are fed up with the difficulties of changing
their eating habits often return to fad diets. Rather than being
moderate, fad diets involve extreme dietary changes. They advise
eating only one type of food, or they prohibit other types of foods
<b>entirely. This results in a situation where a person's body doesn't get all</b>
the vitamins and other things that it needs to stay healthy.

One popular fad diet recommends eating lots of meat and animal
products, while nearly eliminating carbohydrates. A scientific study from
Britain found that this diet is very high in fat. According to the study,
the increase of damaging fats in the blood can lead to heart disease
and, in extreme cases, kidney failure. Furthermore, diets that are too
low in carbohydrates can cause the body to use its own muscle for
energy. The less muscle you have, the less food you use up, and the
result is slower weight loss.

Veteran dieters may well ask at this point, "What is ideal diet?" Well,
to some extent, it depends on the individual. A United States
government agency has determined that to change your eating habits
requires changing your psychology of eating, and everyone has a
different psychology. That being said, the British study quoted above
recommends a diet that is high in carbohydrates and high in fiber, with

portions of fatty foods kept low. According to the study, such a diet is
the best for people who want to stay healthy, lose weight, and keep
that weight off. And, any dieting program is best undertaken with a
doctor's supervision.

27. According to the passage, why are there more overweight people
nowadays?

A. They are using fad diets.

B. They spend a lot of time in front of computers.
C. They have heart disease.

D. They are eating more protein than ever before.

28. After losing weight by dieting, what usually happens to people?
A. They have kidney failure. B.They keep the weight off.
C. They gain the weight back again. D. They have less muscle.
29. According to the passage, why does the ideal diet depend on the
individual?

A. The less muscle you have, the less food you use up.
B. Everyone can gain the weight back.

<b>your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the</b>
<b>questions from 36 to 42.</b>

Today we take electricity for granted and perhaps we do not realize
just how useful this discovery has been. Steam was the first invention
that replaced wind power. It was used to drive engines and was passed
through pipes and radiators to warm rooms. Petrol mixed with air was
the next invention that provided power. Exploded In a cylinder, It drove
a motor engine. Beyond these simple and direct uses, those forms have
not much adaptability. On the other hand, we make use of electricity In
thousands of ways. From the powerful voltages that drive our electric
trains to the tiny current needed to work a simple calculator, and from
the huge electric magnet in steel works that can lift 10 tons to the tiny
electric magnet in a doorbell, all are powered by electricity. An electric
current can be made with equal ease to heat a huge mass of molten
metal in a furnace, or to boil a jug for a cup of coffee. Other than atomic

energy, which has not as yet been harnessed to the full, electricity is
the greatest power in the world. It is flexible, and so adaptable for any
task for which it is wanted. It travels so easily and with incredible speed
along wires or conductors that it can be supplied instantly over vast
distances. To generate electricity, huge turbines or generators must be
turned. In Australia they use coal or water to drive this machinery.
When dams are built, falling water is used to drive the turbines without
polluting the atmosphere with smoke from coal. Atomic power is used in
several countries but there is always the fear of an accident. A tragedy
once occurred at Chernobyl, in Ukraine, at an atomic power plant used
to make electricity. The reactor leaked, which caused many deaths
through radiation.

Now scientists are examining new ways of creating electricity
without harmful effects to the environment. They may harness the tides
as they flow in and out of bays. Most importantly, they hope to trap
sunlight more efficiently. We do use solar heaters for swimming pools
but as yet improvement in the capacity of the solar cells to create more

<b>There are desert plants which survive the dry season in the form of</b>
inactive seeds. There are also desert insects which survive as inactive

</div>
<span class='text_page_counter'>(47)</span><div class='page_container' data-page=47>

larvae or pupae. In addition, difficult as, it is to believe, there are desert
fish which can survive through years of drought in the form of inactive
eggs. These are shrimps that live in the Mojave Desert, an intensely dry
region in the southwest of the United States where shade temperatures
<b>of over 50°C are often recorded.</b>

The eggs are in the size and have the appearance of grains of sand.
When sufficient spring rain falls to form a lake, once every two to five
<b>years, these eggs hatch. Then the water soon swarms with millions of</b>
tiny shrimps about a millimeter long which feed on microscopic plant
and animal: organisms which grow in the temporary desert lake. Within
a week, the shrimps grow from their originaM millimeter to a length of
about 1 centimeters.

Through the time that the shrimps are rapidly maturing, the water
<b>in the lake equally rapidly evaporates. Therefore, it is a race against</b>
<b>time. By the twelfth day, when they are about 3 centimeters long,</b>
hundreds of tiny eggs form on the underbodies of the females. Usually,
by this time, all that remains of the lake is a large, muddy patch of wet
soil. On the thirteenth day and the next, during the final hours of their
brief lives, the females lay their eggs in the mud. Then, having ensured
that their species will survive, the shrimps die as the last of the water

evaporates. /

If sufficient rain falls the following year to form another lake, the
eggs hatch, and once again cycle of growth, adulthood, egg-laying, and

death is rapidly passed through. If there is insufficient rain to form a
<b>lake, the eggs lie dormant for a year, or even longer if necessary.</b>
Occasionally, perhaps twice in a hundred years, sufficient rain falls to
form a deep lake that lasts a month or more. In this case, the species
passes through two cycles of growth, egg-laying and death. Thus the
species multiplies considerably, which further ensures its survival.

<b>Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on</b>
<b>your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the</b>
<b>questions from 19 to 25.</b>

A balance diet contains proteins, which are composed of complex
amino acids. There are 20 types of amino acids, comprising about 16
percent of the body weight in a lean individual. A body needs all 20 to
be healthy. Amino acids can be divided into two groups: essential and
non-essential. There are 9 essential amino acids. These are the proteins
that the body cannot produce by itself, so a healthy individual
mustingest them. The 11 non-essential amino acids, on the other hand,
are produced by the body, so it is not necessary to ingest them.
Proteins are described as being either high-quality or low-quality,
depending on how many of the 9 essential amino acids the food
contains.

High-quality proteins, typical found in animal meats, are proteins
that have ample amounts of the essential amino acids. Low-quality
proteins are mainly plant proteins and usually lack one or more of the
essential amino acids. Since people who follow a strict vegetarian diet
are ingesting only low quality proteins, they must make sure that their
diets, contain a variety of proteins, in order to ensure that what is

lacking in one food is available in ,another. This process of selecting a
variety of the essential proteins is called proteins complementation.
Since an insufficient amount of protein in the diet can be crippling and
<b>prolonged absence of protein can cause death, it is imperative that</b>
a vegetarian diet contains an ample amount of the essential proteins.
19. With what topic is this passage primarily concerned?

A. The 20 types of amino acids. B. High-low quality proteins.

D. ate too many low quality proteins

The time when human crossed the Arctic land bridge from Siberia to
Alaska seems remote to us today, but actually represents a late stage in
the prehistory of humans, an era when polished stone implements and
bows and arrows were already being used and dogs had already been
domesticated.

<b>When these early migrants arrived in North America, they found</b>

the woods and plains dominated by three types of American
mammoths. These elephants were distinguished from today's elephants
mainly by their thick, shaggy coats and their huge, upward-curving
tusks. They had arrived on the continent hundreds of thousands of
years before their followers. The wooly mammoth in the North, the
Columbian mammoth in middle North America, and the imperial
mammoth of the South, together with their distant cousins the
mastodons, dominated the land. Here, as in the Old World, there is
evidence that humans hunted these elephants, as shown by numerous
<b>spear points found with mammoth remains.</b>

Then, at the end of the Ice Age, when the last glaciers had retreated,
there was a relatively sudden and widespread extinction of elephants.
In the New World, both mammoths and mastodons disappeared. In the
Old World, only Indian and African elephants survived.

Perhaps it was his own lack of adequate schooling that inspired
Horace Mann to work so hard for the important reforms in education
that he accomplished. While he was still a boy, his father and older

brother died, and he became responsible for supporting his family. Like
most,of the children in his town, he attended school only two or three
months a year. Later, with the help of several teachers, he was able to
study law and became a member of the Massachusetts bar, but he
<b>never forgot those early struggles.</b>

<b>. While serving in Massachusetts legislature, he signed a historic</b>
education bill that set up a state board of education. Without regret, he
gave up his successful legal practice and political career to become the
first secretary of the board. There he exercised an enormous influence
during the critical period of reconstruction that brought into existence
the American graded elementary school as substitute for the older
distinct school system. Under his leadership, the curriculum was
restructured, the school year was increased to a minimum of six
<b>months, and mandatory schooling was extended to age sixteen.</b>
Other important reforms included the establishment of state normal
schools for teacher training, institutes for in-service teacher education,
and lyceums for adult education. He was also instrument in improving
salaries for teachers and creating school libraries.

Mann's ideas about school reform were developed and distributed in
twelve annual reports to the state of Massachusetts that he wrote
during his tenure as secretary of education. Considered quite radical at
the time, the Massachusetts reforms later served as a model for the
nation. Mann was recognized as the father of public education.

Dissociative identity disorder is a psychological condition in which a
person's identity dissociates, or fragments, thereby creating distinct
independent

identities within one individual. Each separate personality can be
distinct from the other personalities in a number of ways, including
posture, manner of moving, tone and pitch of voice, gestures, facial
expressions and use of language. A person suffering from dissociative
identity disorder may have a large number of independent personalities
or perhaps only two or three.

Two stories of actual women suffering from dissociative identity
<b>disorder have been extensively recounted in books and films that are</b>
<b>familiar to the public. One of them is the story of a woman with 22</b>
separate personalities known as Eve. In the 1950s, a book by Corbett
Thigpen and a motion picture starring Joanne Woodward, each of which
<b>was titled The three faces of Eve, presented her story; the title referred</b>
<b>to three faces, when the woman known as Eve actually experienced 22</b>
different personalities, because only 3 of the personalities could exist at
one time. Two decades later, Carolyn Sizemore, Eve's 22nd personalities,
<b>wrote about her experiences in a book entitled I'm Eve. The second</b>
well-known story of a woman suffering from dissociative identity
disorder is the story of Sybil, a woman whose 16 distinct personalities
emerged over a period of 40 years. A book describing Sybil's
experiences was written by Flora Rreta Schreiber and was published in
1973; a motion picture based on the book and starring Sally Field
followed.

<i><b>CONSERVING THE WORLD NATURAL RESOURCES</b></i>

In the decade of the 1970s, the United Nations organized several
important meetings on the human environment to study a very serious
problem. We humans are destroying the world around us. We are using
up all of our natural resources. We must learn to conserve them, or life
will be very bad for our children and our grandchildren.

There are several major parts to this problem.

<b>Population. Most problems of the environment come from</b>
population growth. In 1700 there were 625 million people in the world In
1900 there were 1.6 billion. In 1950 2.5 billion, and in 1980 4.4 billion.
In the year 2010 there will be well over 6 billion. More people need
more water, more food, more wood, and more petroleum.

<b>Distribution. Scientists say there is enough water in the world for</b>
everyone, but some countries have a lot of water and some have only a
little. Some areas get all their rain during one season. The rest of the
year is dry. There are huge forests in the Amazon area of Brazil. In other
parts of the world there is only desert.

<b>Petroleum. We are using up the world's petroleum. We use it in</b>
our cars and to heat our buildings in winter.

</div>
<span class='text_page_counter'>(66)</span><div class='page_container' data-page=66>

the fish there. Thousands of people also die from these chemicals every
year. Chemicals also go into the air and pollute it. Winds carry this
polluted air to other countries and other continents.

<b>Poverty. Poor farmers use the same land over and over. The land</b>
needs ạ rest so It will be better next year. However, the farmer must
have food this year. Poor people cut down trees for firewood. In some
areas when the trees are gone, the land becomes desert. However,
people need wood to cook their food now. Poor people cannot save the
environment for the future.

We now have the information and the ability to solve these huge
problems. However, this Is not a problem for one country or one area of
the world. It is a problem for all humans. The people and the nations of
the world must work together to conserve the world's resources. No one

controls the future, but we all help make it.

<b>Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on</b>
<b>your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the</b>
<b>questions from 25 to 31.</b>

Social parasitism involves one species relying on another to raise its
young. Among vertebrates, the best known social parasites are such
<b>birds as cuckoos and cowbirds; the female lays egg in a nest</b>
belonging to another species and leaves it for the host to rear.

<b>The dulotic species of ants, however, are the supreme social</b>
<b>parasites.</b>

Consider, for example, the unusual behavior of ants belonging to the
genus Polyergus. All species of this ant have lost the ability to care for
themselves. The workers, do not forage for food, feed their brood or
queen, or even clean their own nest. To compensate for these deficits,
Polyergus has become specialized at obtaining workers from the related
genus Formica to do these chores.

In a raid, several thousand Polyergus workers will travel up to 500
feet in search of a Formica nest, penetrate it, drive off the queen and
her workers, capture the pupal brood, and transport it back to their
nest. The captured brood is then reared by the resident Formica workers
until the developing pupae emerge to add to the Formica population,
which maintains the mixed-species nest. The Formica workers forage for
food and give it to colony members of both species, they also remove
wastes and excavate new chambers as the population increases.

The true extent of the Polyergus and dependence on the Formica

becomes apparent when the worker population grows too large for
existing nest. Formica scouts locate a new nesting site, return to the
<b>mixed-species colony, and recruit additional Formica nest mates.</b>
During a period that may last seven days, the Formica workers carry to
the new nest all the Polyergus eggs, larvae, and pupae, every Polyergus
adult, and even the Polyergus queen.

Of the approximately 8,000 species of ants in the world, all 5 species
of polyergus and some 200 species in other genera have evolved some
degree of parasitic relationship with other ants.

The modern comic strip started out as ammunition in a newspaper
war between giants of the American press in the late nineteenth
century. The first full-color comic strip appeared in January 1894 in the
New York World, owned by Joseph Pulitzer. The first regular weekly
full-color comic supplement, similar to today's Sunday funnies, appeared
two years later, in William Randolph Hearst's rival New York paper, the
Morning Journal. :

Both were immensely popular.and publishers realized that
supplementing the news with comic relief boosted the sale of papers.
The Morning Journal started another feature in 1896, the "Yellow Kid",
the first continuous comic character in the United States, whose
<b>creator, Richard Outcault, had been lured away from the World by</b>
the ambitious Hearst. The "Yellow Kid" was in many ways a pioneer. Its
comic dialogue was the strictly urban farce that came to characterize
<b>later strips, and it introduced the speech balloon inside the strip,</b>
usually placed above the characters'heads.

<b>The first strip to incorporate all the elements of later comics was</b>
Rudolph Dirks's "Katzenjammer Kids", based on Wilhelm Busch's Max
and Moritz, a European satire of the nineteenth century. The "Kids"
<b>strip, first published in 1897, served as the prototype for future</b>
American strips. It contained not only speech balloons, but a continuous
cast of characters, and was divided into small regular panels that did
away with the larger panoramic scenes of earlier comics.

Newspaper syndication played a major role in spreading the
popularity of comic strips throughout the country. Though weekly
colored comics came first, daily black-and-white strips were not far
behind. The first appeared in the Chicago American in 1904. It was
followed by many imitators, and by 1915 black-and-white comic strips
<b>had become a staple of daily newspapers around the country.</b>

heart attacks or are killed in car accidents. However, there is hope for
city dwellers. Experts say that the situation can be improved if we pay
more attention to looking after our environment. One step would be to
reduce the number of vehicles and limit

heavy industry, which produce toxic emissions. Even (42)
dark-coloured

roofs with lighter-coloured ones can cause a drop in temperature of up
to 4 degree Celsius.

<b>Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on</b>
<b>your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the</b>
<b>questions from 43 tb 50.</b>

Large animals that inhabit the desert have evolved a number of

adaptations for reducing the effects of extreme heat. One adaptation is
to be light in color, and to reflect rather than absorb the Sun's rays.
Desert mammals also depart from the normal mammalian practice of
<b>maintaining a constant body temperature. Instead of trying to keep</b>
down the body temperature deep inside the body, which would involve
the expenditure of water and energy, desert mammals allow their
temperatures to rise.to what would normally be fever height, and
temperatures as high as 46 degrees Celsius have been measured in
Grant’s gazelles. The overheated body then cools down during the cold
desert night, and indeed the temperature may fall unusually low by
dawn, as low as 34 degrees

Celsius in the camel. This is an advantage since the heat of the first few
hours of daylight is absorbed in warming up the body, and an excessive
buildup of heat does not begin until well into the day.

<b>Another strategy of large desert animals is to tolerate the loss of</b>
body water to a point that would be fatal for non-adapted animals. The
camel can lose up to 30 percent of its body weight as water without
harm to itself, whereas human beings die after losing only 12 to 13
percent of their body weight. An equally important adaptation is the
ability to replenish this water loss at one drink. Desert animals can drink
prodigious volumes in a short time, and camels have been known to
imbibe over 100 liters in a few minutes. A very dehydrated person, on
the other hand, cannot drink enough water to dehydrate at one session,
because the human stomach is not sufficiently big and because a too
rapid dilution of the body fluids causes death from water intoxication.

The tolerance of water loss is of obvious advantage in the desert, as
animals do not have to remain near a water hole but can obtain food

from grazing sparse and far-flung pastures. Desert-adapted mammals
have the further ability to feed normally when extremely dehydrated, it
is a common experience in people that appetite is lost even under
conditions of moderate thirst.
