I/ GRAMMAR:
1. Tenses: Simple Present; Simple Past; Used to; Simple Future, Be going to;
Present simple with future meaning; present perfect.
• Simple present tense : S + V(-s/-es) To talk about general truths.
Examples: The earth is round. The earth goes round the Sun. The moon doesn’t go
round the Sun.
• Simple past : S + V-ed / V

To express an action happened and finished in
the definite past time. (yesterday; ago; in May; in 2005; last Sunday/ week/
month/ year…)
Examples: What did you do last night? – I did my homework and then I went to
bed.
• Used to : often happened in the past and now no longer occurs. (đã thường)
Examples: I used to go fishing when I was a child.
In the past there used to be a school here. Now they build a shopping
mall here.
• Simple future : S + will + bare infinitive To express an action that will
happen in the future. (tonight; tomorrow; in 5 minutes; in 2012; next week/
month/ year..)
Examples: He will come to visit us next Saturday.
• Be going to: future of intention
Examples: What are you going to do this weekend? – I am going to visit my home
village.
Compare: I bought some food. I am going to have a party tomorrow. Would you
like to come?
Yes. I will come if I finish my report.
• Present simple: Thì hiện tại đơn mang nghĩa tương lai. (Xem bài tập 1 trang
60 SGK)
Examples: A: What are you going to do tonight?
B: I’m going to see a movie at Sao Mai movie theater?
A: When does it start?
B: It starts at 6.45
• Present perfect: S + have / has + PP … + since / for… to express an
action happened in the past and has continued to the present time.
Examples: I’ve leaned English for nearly 3 years.
How long has she lived there? – She has lived there since she got married.
(She still lives there now.)
Compare with: She lived in Da Nang for 5 years and then she moved to HCM
city in 2005.
(She doesn’t live in Da Nang any longer.)

2. Structures:
• (not) adjective + enough + to- infinitive : (không) đủ……..để…
Examples: Nối 2 câu thành một, dung “enough”
a) He is not old. He can’t drive a car. He is not old enough to drive a car.
b) This coat isn’t warm. I don’t wear it in winter. This coat isn’t warm enough
for me to wear in winter. (Chú ý 2 câu khác chủ ngữ, dùng …adj. + enough + for +
O + to-infinitive)
c) I don’t have money. I can’t buy that house. I don’t have enough money to buy
that house.
(Chú ý “enough” đứng trước danh từ)
• Reflexive pronouns: - selves and –self
I myself you yourself / yourselves
He himself we ourselves
She herself they themselves
It itself
Examples: He cut himself. (object)
Who helps you with your homework? – Nobody. I do it by myself.
Who will do that work? – I myself do it. (emphasis)
• Modals: must / have to / ought to / should / may / can + bare infinitive
Examples: I have to / must do my chores. (obligation / duty)

You ought to / should eat vegetables. You are too fat. (advice)
May I help you? (offer assistant)
Can you help me? (ask for favor)
• Why – Because
Examples: Why did Hoa go to school late? (asking for reason)
Because she watched TV late last night.
• Prepositions of time: on; in; at; before; after; between; until; during
Examples: on Monday, at five o’clock, in June, on June 6; in summer, in 2008,
between 9 and 10 p.m, before dinner, after breakfast, during the summer
vacation, until midnight
In the morning/ afternoon/ evening, at night, at midnight, at noon, at Christmas, on
Christmas Eve, on the weekend
Exercises: Fill out the blanks with the suitable prepositions of time.

• Adverbs of manner: Adjective + -ly adverds
Slow + -ly = slowly
Careful + -ly = carefully
Good well
Exceptions: fast / hard: both adj. & adv.
• Reported speech (Command/ Request/ Advice)
Examples:
“Do your homework, Tim” – said Mrs. Chen. Mrs. Chen told Tim to do his
homework.
“Can you give me a hand, Tim” – said Mrs. Chen. Mrs. Chen asked Tim to give
her a hand.
“You should stay in bed, Tim” – said the doctor. The doctor said Tim should stay
in bed.
Exercises: Put the following commands and requests and advice into reported
speech:
1) Their mother said to them, “Don’t make so much noise.”
2) Mrs. Jackson said to Tim, “Could you give me a hand, please?”
3) She said to her son, “Go straight upstairs and get into bed.”
4) Mary said to John, “Can you carry my suitcase, please?”
5) “You should stay in bed for a few days.” – said the doctor to Tim.
6) “You ought to keep your body warm.” – said the doctor to Tim.
• Gerund: (V-ing)
After prepositions or some verbs such as: like/ love/ enjoy/ hate/ dislike/ avoid…+
V-ing.
Examples: He likes playing soccer, but he hates washing up.

• Asking for favor/ Offering assistance and responses to them.(Xin giúp đỡ/
Ngõ ý giúp đỡ người khác và đáp lại đề nghị giúp đỡ) (see textbooks/ page
65)
Examples: Could you help me, please? – Certainly/ Of course/ Sure/ No problem
May I help you? – Yes, please./ No, thanks.
• Comparison with: like, (not) as…as; (not) the same as; different from
Examples Your hair is black; mine is black, too (the same)
Your hair is the same color as_mine

Examples: The town is becoming noisier.
The air is getting more polluted.

• Comparative and superlative adjectives
Examples: a) Nam is 1.5m tall. Ba is 1.6m tall. Minh is 1.8m tall.
Ba is taller than Nam.
Minh is taller than Ba. Minh is the tallest of all.
b) The apartment is expensive. The house is more expensive than the
apartment. The villa is the most expensive.
Make comparisons between the city and the country about these things.

transport schools

Examples: There are more entertainments in the city than in the country.
Food in the country is cheaper than food in the city.
