Part 2: Read the following article and choose the best answer (A, B, C or D) to each question (10 points)
When developing a plan for a new business, the entrepreneur quite naturally wants to eliminate all risk.
While it is impossible to avoid some risk, the goal is to minimize it as much as possible. How can we do this?
Thorough research and careful planning are the keys. There are two parts to good research. First, you must
demonstrate that there is a need for the product or service you plan to offer. Are there enough people out there
who would be willing to pay for it? Second, you must look at your competition. What do you have to offer that
your competitors do not? Is your product or service of better quality in some way? Is it cheaper or more easily
available? Is there a niche in the market that your competitors are not addressing? If what you have to offer is

2

identical to what your competitors are offering, your business is not likely to be successful. These are some
things to consider when evaluating how well you can measure up against the competition. Once you have
evaluated a need for your product or service and determined how yours will be different from your
competitors', you are ready to begin the next part of your plan - financing.

Part 2: Read the following passage and choose the best answer (A, B, C or D) to each question (10 points)
British wine makers in France are still a small minority, but they have been buying French vineyards and
bringing new dynamism to some previously sleepy corners of France. One of them is Tessa Gardner: “Of
course I was attracted by the sun and the lifestyle, but you soon realize that making wine can be a really tough
business. Bad weather at the wrong time of year can destroy the grape harvest.” Tessa had some experience of
growing cereal crops on her father’s farm in England before buying her vineyard near Cahors. She explains: “I
tried to get loans from local banks, telling them about my agricultural background, but they thought my venture
was too much of a gamble. So I had to mortgage my house in England to raise the money to buy the new
equipment I needed. I really owned a house near the vineyard, but I needed $500,000 for new investment in a
hurry.”
So far, Tessa’s gamble has paid off. She has taken her wine to some important wine shows, and her
Gardner wine won a silver medal at the Cahors Foire du Vin last year. The big breakthrough came when a
French supermarket chain started buying her wine. “Until then I’d been selling a case here and a case there, but
selling 5000 cases at once certainly helps!”
Sales turnover for her vineyard last year was nearly $1m. On this, Tessa calculates that she had a profit
margin of 5 percent. “This isn’t too bad. In previous years we were just breaking even. I hope to increase our
margins over the coming years,” she says. “We hope to get a reasonable return on our investment.” So, is this a

life of wine and roses? “It can be,” says Tessa. “There are some wonderful days, especially in spring and
autumn. But at harvest time it’s just back breaking work, with 5 a.m starts, and 16 hour days. I wouldn’t
encourage people to get into winemaking as a leisure activity!”
46. British winemakers in France are _____
A. taking over the French wine industry.
B. still few in number.
C. only there for the lifestyle.
D. bringing new technologies into wine industry.
47. Why did French banks refuse to give Tessa a loan?
A. They only lend to French citizens.
B. She had no experience of management.
C. They thought her business idea was too risky.
D. She had no experience of agriculture.
48. When she started making wine, Tessa _____
A. sold her wine to UK retailers.
B. received big orders from French supermarkets.
C. sold her wine in small quantities only.
D. sold her wine in large quantities to supermarket in UK.
49. Tessa’s wine business _____
A. has made money from the start.
B. will definitely be highly profitable in the future.
C. has been successful in the 1st year. D. only broke even in the first few years.
50. According to Tessa, wine making _____
